I meant more about the quality. How bad was it, if you ever fished it or heard from him about it.  At one point, that looked like all I’d ever be able to do.  Now maybe an older Post or Ocean working their way in. I’m just hoping the trend continues until I can afford something without Detroits :)

Oh ok yeah honestly the boat was fine with a few noticeable cosmetic issues. His was a 36’.  I never fished it but he had it over in the boat show one year and we hung out drinking beers while people came and looked. Numerous people mentioned that THT thread and I’d just bust out laughing every time.

my God South Florida/Keys is boat porn heaven, and I was down there with my buddy who is looking to upgrade his big Contender CC.

An interesting one though - here's me driving the actual African Queen (in Key Largo) that was featured in the movie. Same tiller Bogart steered.  Boat was launched in 1912.

So I'm still in a sleep deprived haze, but we had a pretty epic Down the Bay race, which is Annapolis to Hampton down the Chesapeake.

I took some short video I thought I would post up with a recap but little did I know about halfway into this thing all hell would break loose with squall action. Spent a lot of time hanging on for dear life under main and jib in almost 40 knots of breeze.

Once I come back to life I will surely have more to report

So I got into what I would characterize as a somewhat heated discussion with the wife yesterday.  It started with me sending my wife a joke listing of a Beneteau 55 for $600,000, saying we should buy it.  But the same yacht brokerage had a Catalina 42 for sale.  She insisted that if I am going to shove sailing down their throats then we need a bigger boat.  I know my family and they will only have a half-hearted commitment to the cause.  While I would love a bigger boat, if it is going to be 90% me on the boat, I don’t need the additional expense and hassle of a bigger boat. The 36 is very manageable solo. The 42 is maybe not so.  But she insisted I come down and discuss the scenario with a broker.  And so I will today.  God help me.  This is essentially what I’d be looking at, or a Beneteau 423.  Boat prices are pretty jacked right now though.

Your last post where she sent you to the boat so to speak concerned me. Seemed like a fight was coming tbqh. I’ll even go a step further I did not expect her wanting to spend time with you on the boat. They may half ass it but she’s wanting to hang with you where you are. That’s a good thing. And I’ll not go with the why are you complaining about getting a bigger boat but like come on man. 😉

I am a pragmatist.  Sure a bigger boat sounds fun.  But it also sounds a lot more expensive and also more difficult to solo, which is a real consideration.  I solo this boat all the time.  Soloing a 42 is easy enough except for mooring at Catalina.  I can maneuver this baby perfectly to grab a mooring there.  A 42 footer is intimidating.  And so is 2 kids moving towards college.  I don’t know.

My dog.

orange Beach is where I bought my boat.

‘My buddies are fishing Rebecca they had a 119” marlin Friday and I’m way too hungover to look it up and see if that won.

So what you’re saying is you prefer to be on the boat by yourself. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

We thought we were here to watch for two days we arrived last day.  anyway pretty solid scene.  More dog pics:

Picked up yesterday, a little lighter in the pocketbook now. Going from a rotation of boats from the 2000’s to a 2020 was a little eye opening today. The sales guy looked at me funny when I asked where the key was at. Everything is touchscreen which is going to take some getting used too. My wife asked me this morning if this ended my hunt for a bay boat, nope. You can’t have enough boat options although I may be looking a little older and cheaper for that one.

Love the boat.   It seems a bit more understated than many other wake boats, and I mean that unequivocally as a compliment.  I don’t know a single thing about ski/tube/wake/surf boats, but that is a good looking boat.  Enjoy it in good health, Brew.

Oh, and as far as having no key, my 2005 Air 226 has no key.  Press start, then punch in my zip code, then press start again.

My 2019 MasterCraft has a key.

Go figure.

We just recently reupped on vehicles.  Wife’s new ride is keyless start.  I’m not a fan.  But I’m grumpy about shit like that.

That seems like it would be pretty easy to hack if you use your actual zip code.

That’s part of the reason it’s taken me so long to find something. All my boats have either been white on white with an accent color or white and black exterior with white interior. Same for vehicles (except for they are white on grey), I’m as vanilla as they come. I also wanted a standard windshield. This one has a light gray interior with black accents which took some getting past, but I think I may end up liking it better than white because it should hide spots easier

It would be.  Good thing no one here knows I keep it in a slot at Boat Town.  Wouldn't want it to get carted off by a thief before I can sell it.

I may want to enter a tournament in the next few years. Because FAAFO that’s why.

I have the captain for you.

What did you think of The Wharf? That is what the plan was for the Shorty’s/Fisherman’s Wharf area here but it’s starting to sound like it may not happen.

How does it work?  How much cash in, how many people on board crew and guests and who ensures we win - find the holes and reel them in, I mean I’d love to be 23 on the Chicago bulls but that’s not possible so I’d rather settle for a pine rider with a ring than a starter on an also ran if you know what I’m saying.

Captain here says he might know you, or your dad for sure? Michael Walker out of port M and SPI?

it’s taken me 20 fucking years to finally break into the scene but now I have two owners I know - you and owner of this one, and I know one captain this Walker fella who said he’d fish anywhere with us.  I swear it took longer than anything else I’ve done.

I’ll tell ya - done with charters - totally done. I mean we are paying for this week as a client but his model is “the boat is yours for a week” and it’s fantastic. I’ll tell y’all more about it later but this guy is on to something.

he’ll still take us out as friends for sure even offered last night but if we want it for a week fully stocked with food and bait and a crew at a location you want then obviously you gotta pay. But we showed up to an immaculate boat, fresh everything, groceries fully stocked and ready to go.  Never doing a day charter in the gulf at least ever again.

The wharf is amazing.  We thought we arrived for the last two days of the tournament but it was the last day so it’s slowed down. This place was hopping that last night.

I love port A but port A has nothing on orange beach. This place is pretty great. Water is much nicer but still plenty of folks go to port A. It’s trashy here in a different way. Lot silly southern money here.  Too bad they generally don’t like homos because they are a amazingly friendly folk and when in the scene their music is pretty damn catchy.  Won’t go all politics but there’s a lot of flags out I’ll just say that.

You’re in the redneck riviera and pretty much the heart of it as other areas have tried to go more upscale. It is what it is, but the fishing is great out of there. We looked around Perdido before we bought in SWFL, but it was not our scene even though the drive would have been much better. If you figure this tournament fishing out and need some people, I’m always looking for a way to blow some cash. Best plan is buy a boat, hire a crew, and spend some serious coin I would imagine.

This boat it’s $9000 plus food, gas and tips. Not much different than a BVI cat charter for a week.  I’m actually 5 nights his deal is $9000 for 4 nights I think.  But it includes two crew (we don’t have one on board bc we know him well and he knows we are boat savvy - but he would likely reserve a bunk for one crew member), do what you want - fish as much, chill as much, cruise around as much as you want.  It’s a game changer. Waking up at the marina you get to talk to others, see other boats, and live in a way that you just don’t get if you show up at 6am for a $2000 plus tip all day charter to only be told to leave when you roll back in at 4pm.  Sunsets, sunrise, coffee sleepy morning marina life, cocktails at sunset ... man, it’s amazing. Happy place for sure.

Not buying a SFY anytime ... not with @justhookit and this guy in my sphere.  I may sponsor a tourney entry in the coming years but right now my girl is choking on my 2021 boat vacation bill. This trip, small ship Tahiti cruise, 45 foot cat charter in the BVIs, and an overnight tuna trip in the fall. If I said I’m doing a tourney on top of that she’s “divorce” me and take the dog.

@troph I’ve got a good friend that fished all the big TX tournaments for years. Poco, TIft, legends etc.  My understanding is it wasn’t the entry necessarily, but the pots and Calcutta that would “sting”.   The problem is, what tf does “sting” mean to someone who has a few million wrapped up in a boat and buys their fuel 1500 gallons a pop?   I don’t know anyone who ever followed the whole scene down the east coast and into TX (well I know one guy but not well enough) to ever figure out what that looks like, but he could afford it. But he owns dozens of boats that make his SF look like a dinghy.

He probably knows my captain John Brennan. My boat is PortAfino and Brennan also runs a well known boat called Game Plan. I’ve got a bunch of friends in town and they are dragging me to Gaff so I’ll get back to the rest of the boat and tourney stuff later. Enjoy Memorial Day.
