TV ratings say no Missouri

Competitive balance says Missouri over Alabama to soften our schedule a little

But TV and money always decides.

Maybe, but the SEC has so many good match-ups we may catch a break.

Bama isn't that much tougher than Mizzou these days. Drink has them playing well. Sked isn't that much easier, IMO.

So we go:

-Texas State

-Ohio State

-UTSA

to open and then we know we 9 of the following 10 teams:

-OU (lock)

-ATM (lock)

-Arkansas (lock)

-Alabama

-Auburn

-Ole Miss

-LSU

-Missouri

-South Carolina

-Tennessee

That is going to be a gnarly bitch of a schedule. Should be a lot of fun. The missed opponent is going to be a really big deal. I'm guessing all of the teams that Texas has rarely played will be on there, SCar, Tenn, Auburn, Ole Miss. Then you have the game in Baton Rouge that makes up for the 2020 miss. So you're left with an argument over ratings and money for UT/Bama versus the fact that it's been longer ago that Texas last played Missouri.

I'm guessing no Missouri. Wow.

How did you come up with those 7 teams of the 12?

How do you know it’ll be 6 of those 7?

I get it’s assumed we won’t be playing anyone we’ve played the last two years (outside of our 3 locks), but I won’t be surprised if sec gon sec and we get a repeat of another team or two.

I have a hard time being flippant about Bama and I have a hard time taking Missouri seriously. Missouri is good again this year, on paper. Let’s see how things look after they face October.

I think there's going to be a lot of grumbling if we avoid a bunch of conference teams to play repeat opponents (outside of OU, arky, aggy) from 2024 and 2025.

The whole deal has been to ensure everyone plays everyone in a 4/6 year span (since there will always be an odd team out).  If they want the "marquee" Texas game a la Texas/Georgia, it would likely be Bama.  Personally, I think it won't be them because we just had them in 2022 and 2023.

It's been decades since we played most of those 7 leftover teams, with the exceptions of Bama (2022/23), Ole Miss (13) and Mizzou (17).

Probably because those are the teams we haven't played and CTJ's assuming they begin the nine year schedule according to the "every team will play all other teams twice every four years" note.

Yeah.

As indicated in the release, with NIL and transfer portal it’s going to be impossible to reasonably assess SOS until end of January each year (or even later if the coaching carousel is still revolving)

I get it.

And know what makes the most sense. But I don’t think it’s been explicitly said that if you were on our schedule the last two years (and aren’t arky/a&m/ou) you won’t be next year.

Just saying don’t be shocked if we get a vandy, Florida, or Kentucky again

I am starting to think I think next year is a reset year and we may get 1 or 2 of the 6 we have already played.

This is a big question that I’ve been wondering. They’ll likely want to add teams we haven’t played but I don’t think there will be a hard and fast requirement for it. I personally think they should split up key pairs for geographical and competitive balance purposes. Something like:

Bama/UGA

Florida/Tenn

LSU/Auburn

S. Carolina/Kentucky

OleMiss/Missouri

Vandy/Miss st

You can mix and match, but never have one of those groupings together if that makes sense.

It could be if the SEC wants the schedule to be more "balanced". Personally, I'd rather not see Miss St, UK, or Vandy again next year. I definitely wanna see LSU and Tennessee ASAP, though. Helmet games

Right, thinking league wide they might need to balance those 6, and that is also part of the every 4 year review (review both the rivalries and the balance of schedules)

The whole point of having locks is to enable the conference to move the other match-ups around with impunity. Every school in this conference wants a Texas home game. They've talked about that for 3 years on SEC radio and Sankey's said as much, adding "and Oklahoma" into that sentiment, but we all know that OU isn't moving the needle in the same way.

The notion that Sankey is going to tell people at Auburn or SCar or LSU "no" in order to put Vanderbilt and Kentucky back on UT's schedule is purely overthought fan fiction.

It's got to be for at least some schools. Not everyone played their 3 "annual rivals" during these bridge schedules.

Everyone is playing everyone else. Texas is going to absolutely play Vandy and Kentucky twice each in the next four seasons.

No shit? That has nothing to do with my response. I've taken the position, which I thought was a given until reading these last few responses, that they're not going to repeat match-ups for Texas and OU before pitting them against the rest of the conference first.

We’re not talking about the next 4 seasons now.

we’re talking about next year and will Texas have 6 opponents they haven’t faced before in conference or a repeat(s) among vandy /UK/Florida/Miss St/Georgia

i wont be surprised if they do

Missouri to me is that team that OU always beats and then we get a shot at handing them a loss from time to time.

The way I read it they did say the next 4 seasons and then they will reevaluate.

If schools really do see Bama, LSU, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Missouri, Auburn all in one year and then Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Mississippi State all in the other year on a consistent basis, you have to wonder if they deliberately load up in the portal on the latter years.

it's a clean slate fresh reset - there will be repeats

You're correct, that has not been said yet. We'll find out tomorrow.

Sure but CTJ was using a quote about the next 4 seasons to argue something specific to next year.

There will be repeats simply because it's difficult to impossible to not have repeats.

6 teams didn't play at least one of their new annual rivals.

I haven't been following all the details...will they just be announcing opponents tomorrow?  Or the full schedule with dates?

We think opponents and locations but not dates.

From ESPN.  Yes it will be a clean slate, with some repeats (like you said, will have to happen in some way) and unbalanced home/road since it is 9 games.

Texas has a P4 OOC home game (Ohio State), so I guess we should expect 5 road games (1 should be the OU game, since we are the home team this year) and 4 home games in conference play.

The formula of records the SEC used to calculate how to slot teams came from a combined league record during the past four years. Ole Miss, for example, was fourth among the 16 SEC teams in that time frame and Auburn was 14th. Oklahoma and Texas carried over three seasons from the Big 12 for the purposes of the data.

The schedules are going to be built with a clean slate for the next four years, which means there could be hiccups, such as repeat games from the prior season. Some matchups could also be attributed to the unbalanced schedule -- five home and four road games or vice versa. A priority for balance was given to teams for 2026 as they'd be more likely to get five home games if they had a power conference game on the road.

That's a good point. I was assuming the latter, but the announcement was a little ambiguous. Maybe they're just announcing the permanent rivals.

The last line in the SEC press release is targeted directly at ATM or Arkansas, or both. Not saying only them, but certainly at least one of them. They can both eat shit, regardless.

Here are the potential conflicts

First team listed could host the other team(s) shown two years in a row (A&M is the only team guaranteed to be back on the road to at least one of its three ‘annual opponents’):

Alabama: Tennessee

Arkansas: Missouri

Auburn: Alabama, Georgia

Florida:

Georgia:

Kentucky: Florida, Tennessee

LSU: Arkansas, Texas A&M

Miss St: Ole Miss

Missouri: Texas A&M

Oklahoma: Missouri, Ole Miss

Ole Miss: LSU

South Carolina: Kentucky

Tennessee: Vanderbilt

Texas: Texas A&M, Arkansas

Texas A&M:

Vanderbilt: Auburn

I think it's each team's 9 opponents.  Don't think dates, not sure if it includes home or road.

Sankey wholeheartedly admits that they have a strategy for dripping out schedule information to maintain heightened interest. I doubt they just roll it all out tomorrow. I’m betting no dates and I’m kind of dubious about them even telling whether the games are home or away.
