I bid on so many cars but haven't won one yet. I am expecting a recession so now waiting for some forced selling. Hope to update this thread within a year...

I think the classic car market is in for a tough secular future. Boomers shedding their trailer/garage queens. Spend any time at a car show these days. Most of the owners are within a stones throw of the reaper. The market will do what it does. I might need more garage. Last time I pitched my wife on another one we were driving down 620 and the heater core decided to fail all over her side of the floor board. So we all have problem.

Not far from truth. I think I averaged a little under 20K for the two paint jobs on the MGA. The first one was done in our garage in 1980. The second was not. Granted the second included a lot of metal repair first but a really good paint job is 10-15K

If no metal body work is needed and it's a prime, block, prime, paint, clear, buff job probably close to 20K.  Body work, removing trim, assembly, etc. takes it up from there.

Probably more correct for muscle cars. The MGA is smaller, no roof and just fairly simple in terms of curves in the body. It just needs less effort

Just an add on. I am pretty sure I posed some of these way back in this thread but here are some before and after shots of the MGA. And yes, the color does look totally different depending on what light is nearby

I am heading up there next weekend. It is about 98% done but the 2% is a back ordered trim piece

before

Yes, I lost the thread.  My numbers are for normal sized cars with a roof.  I didn't know we were talking about cars for ants. :)

It’s an onion where every peel reveals an expensive new layer of “we’d better fix that since we’re in here.”

Not sure if anybody is interested but this is a 2002 USPS truck. Neighbor is from NC and is a bbq hobbyist and professional chemist who's working to start a side gig selling bbq in Fort Collins.

Found some more pics of my 1974 MGB - owned it from 1990-2000 when I sold it with only 44,000 on the clock.
A collector from Dallas bought it for $6,000.

I have a beat-up POS 1999 F-150.  Missing hubcap, faded paint, dents and shit.

It is now over 25 years old, and eligible for "Classic" license plates.  I kinda think it would be funny as shit to do so.

At least Texas has reasonable rules on classic plates. I'm too honest to get the Alabama version since, per the regulation, the only time you can drive the car is to a car show.

I assume that you have sufficiently investigated, but Illinois has two kinds of classic plates - the restrictive ones like what you describe, but also an "expanded use" version where you can only drive to shows, gas station, and for service during November and December, but which allows for typical classic driving (i.e., not daily driving) the rest of the year.

Texas has classic and antique.  Antique is more restricted - like car shows, etc.  Classic does not have the restrictions.  You can also run year of manufacture plates with no restrictions.  I have been running YOM  for 20 years on my '69.  I have at least four more pairs as backups.

Im running year of manufacture as well. Hadn’t considered back ups. I’ll have to get a couple sets.

Yeah, Illinois has that too, and it's a nice way not to have to worry about coming to a stop 6" over the line at the intersections with red light cameras...

As luck would have it, I happen to have my grandmother's 1971 plates, so that's what I run.

Only one type available. Because I was bored I found the actual wording

The vehicle is operated in "club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades," and can be
driven to these locations for the purposes of attending these events or activities. For purposes of
Section 40-12-290, Code of Alabama 1975, the term "club activities" shall refer to the sponsored
activities of Vintage Vehicle owner organizations, such as the Antique Automobile Club of
America, or the Model A Club of America. The term "exhibitions" shall be deemed to refer to
public displays of Vintage Vehicles and shall include antique car shows within or without this
state. The term "tours" shall be deemed to be an organized trip comprised of several Vintage
Vehicles to a predetermined location(s). The term "parades" is deemed to be a public procession
on a festive or ceremonial occasion.
(3) The following activities by an owner or operator of a vehicle displaying a Vintage
Vehicle license plate are outside the criteria of legal use and in conflict with the provisions of
Section 40-12-290, Code of Alabama 1975:
(a) The use of the Vintage Vehicle license plate on a vehicle that is being driven to
school, to work, shopping, etc. This type of operation constitutes “general transportation
purposes” as this term is used in Section 40-12-290, Cod

That ‘59 MGA 1600, except for the wire wheels, looks just like the 1960 roadster I drove from 1964 until 1967.
Paid $900 for it from a UT law grad, sold it to an airman out at Bergstrom AFB for $600.

The MG TD reminds me of the dock full of new MG TF roadsters that had just been offloaded from a British freighter in New York harbor in 1954 - as we were passing by on a US Navy transport ship from Puerto Rico.
There must have been a couple hundred brand-spankin’ new ones all lined up in rows.

It took me a few minutes to figure out what they did to the 59. Some interesting subtle changes. Instead of the fender piping they filled the gaps with bondo and painted. A slightly cleaner look but if you ever have to remove the fender it's a repaint

Interesting - but I didn’t notice that in the photo.
In retrospect I am disappointed I never took a picture of my A.
All I have left of it is the chromed metal logo that was on the panel where the radio was to be installed.

There are SOME restrictions on Year of Manufacture…. They wouldn’t let me run my 1972 Farm Truck plates because it’s not in active service as a farm vehicle :/

My dad would always carry hay in the truck for "farm tags"... church, work, groceries, don't matter. Texas closed that loop hole to years ago of what what "farm".  Can't imagine the revenue they lost out on, lulz.

Driving around in this beater bimmer has reinforced everything I hated about that E450 I just sold. All the modern computer crap has completely diluted the driving experience for anything except enthusiast cars. Bombing around in a 200hp five-speed with a good chassis is all you really need.

Oh, and some tunes:

Fuck, it's made the driving experience damned near impossible for "lazy/comfort cars."  And I like a lazy, comfort drive.  But FFS, the other day, the rental car outfit put me in a new Honda Odyssey minivan.  I get in, the hazards are on.  It took me three minutes of hunting around the front of the vehicle to find the button to turn them off (not in any of the usual, central places -- or on the steering column).  Then, I find the push start button....but cannot for the life of me figure out how to put it in gear.  Shifter on column or floor?  Nope.  Instead, three buttons in a busy main console.  Well, not three buttons.  One button up top for Drive.  Then, below it, kind of a button/switch for Reverse.  Then below that, a button for Park.  I adjust the mirrors (because the last driver was obviously a dwarf).  Ten minutes after getting in the car, I can now leave the lot.  On my drive, I stop to get a bottle of water.  Come out....the mirrors all re-set to their previous setting, so I have to adjust them all again.  Is there a button or something somewhere to make my setting the default, so I don't have to keep adjusting them?  Fuck if I know.  Maybe it's on the dash.  Or the door.  Or the center console.  Or maybe it's the 9th option on the third page of the 2nd menu option on the LCD screen display.

I want to start the car, use the turn signal, hazards, windshield wipers, and headlights, and shift it into its various gears.  And I apparently need a 30 minute orientation session to figure out how to use features THAT HAVE BEEN EASY AND USABLE FOR FUCKING 70 FUCKING YEARS, WHY IN THE FUCK DO YOU NEED TO CHANGE EVERY SINGLE FUCKING ONE OF THEM?

@Jerry Callo I'd be interested in another set of 69 if you ever decide to sell.  Mine are not great.

My YOM plates are registered as Antique and then I just display the one rear plate on the back of the car.

Mine are Texas truck plates.  This is the guy I get my plates from.  Doesn't look like he has any '69 car plates right now.  There is another set of the '68 Hemifair plates for @Anastasis, though.
