I would like to agree with that.

But I've seen enough transitions manage to find that shittacular path of "from bad to worse" that I will remain nervous about any Iranian governmental transition for a decade or so.

If the secret police dragging you out of your home are the IRGC or SAVAK, doesn't much matter to the guy getting dragged away.

You mean like al-Sharaa in Syria? That's not working out too well lately either.

It's both not working out great....and probably working out about as well as (or better than) any of the other realistic options. I actually think that, all things considered, the transition is working reasonably well.

In realpolitik world, the best choice is quite often the "least bad" option. You can't grade a country like Syria, with its recent history, challenging neighbor relations, etc., with, say, Canada. Syria has a recent history of brutal dictatorial alawite/clan government, active violent islamism within its borders, and a quite hostile neighbor in Israel that doesn't look to be cutting the new government much slack or providing much patience. Not many new governments would create a paradise on earth in the single year they've held power in those circumstances.

Will it ultimately work out "well" for Syria? That's a relative concept. So, we'll see. At present, it could be going better. But it also could be going MUCH worse.

Iran has a different history and different challenges, as well as different strengths. There is just always the danger of the zeal of revolution creating a new set of similar problems that the previous zealous revolution created. If Iran ends up with a regime that represses with a different flavor of repression, and/or is incapable of the blocking and tackling of government and economic/resource management, then....will things really be that improved? At the end of the day, governments need to do the basics like keeping the wheels of commerce moving, providing basic services (water, power, etc.), and some measure of stability with respect to all those things. Shit, it's why the cartels have some local credibility in some areas of Mexico. You gotta handle those things first.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves. We've seen this hopeful dance before in Iran. This time sure looks different. But then, I suspect many of the same people said "this time sure looks different" the last couple of times the people took to the streets (and they were right....it just wasn't enough).

Burned some more government buildings in Tehran, also government cut internet access down to less than 1% of the populace.

So....seems the internet shutdown has throttle actual news coming out of Iran? Any legit updates?

you will get your updates when israel and US regime change it here in a week or two. they've been moving assets and logistics in for at least a week. pretty clear its viewed as an opp. if i was playing a game of risk I would certainly think the same way.

regime tried their usual internet blackout and firing on protestors. The people are staying strong and still out there fighting.

She's not bothering to cover her face, so that's pretty telling.

I want to believe, but it's hard to verify some of this stuff (like the mosque), although some of the government buildings were definitely burned.

This does seem to match up as the largest protests/whatever we've seen. By now, the regime should have been able to reestablish control over some of the cities and started killing a fuckload of people, so it feels like the people have a chance.

I am an avowed monarchist. Reza Pahlavi has always said that he is willing to serve as a transitional leader and THEN to have democratic elections to determine the future government. If Iranians choose a secular republic, I’m cool with that choice. Anything like that would be better than the current system.

Relax, it's a light-hearted poke and I'm sure that a octogenarian University professor who was born in and teaches in Dallas probably has very little desire to claim the Sun Throne.

HUGE UPDATE IF TRUE OH WAIT

Of course but I don’t keep up with pretenders to the throne from one of the shittiest dynasties in Iranian history.

You mean the family is single handedly responsible for modernizing Iran and the crown prince coordinating the revolution right now over a no-name from a crappy dynasty. I will take the Pahlavis any day of the week.

Yes you are a loon.

And no I was not making a serious argument for a birthright monarch over military leader turned dictator’s descendant.

These are economic in nature and not tied to say a religious edict for women to wear head coverings, etc. much more widespread as everybody is feeling the economy.

According to longtime observers, it’s different. This is every part of Iran, has government buildings being absolutely torched, they’ve lost control of major cities, etc. They are attacking mosques. The list goes on. By now the Iranian government would, have normally been able to curtail them on some level, but it’s picking up.

I know, Lucy, football, etc., but these are verifiably bigger,

Iranian night shift deserves respect.

Zero chance that Macklemore is Icono. 0.0 chance. Houston is a big city, I am sure there is more than one bible thumping, monarchist, Texan fan Persian that acts like an incel douchebag that happens to post on a UT forum.

WSJ

Iran’s army vowed Saturday to join the crackdown on protesters, one of a number of stepped-up warnings from the country’s security services as demonstrations against the regime continue to grow and the death toll mounts.

The army said Saturday it would “firmly safeguard national interests, strategic infrastructure, and public property,” blaming Israel and what it called terrorist groups for the unrest and vowing to “thwart the enemy’s plots.”

The military’s pledge to intervene represented an escalation by authorities that had initially taken a more conciliatory tone with protesters. The early demonstrations mainly aired complaints about the country’s economic crisis but are now demanding an end to Iran’s theocratic system itself.

Until now, only the police and paramilitary security forces had been involved in cracking down on the protests. The regime faces a difficult calculation in responding to their growing intensity. It has little ability to address an economic crisis brought on by crippling sanctions, but President Trump has warned several times this week that he will intervene to stop a bloody crackdown.

“Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before,” Trump said Saturday on social media. “The USA stands ready to help!!!”

Trump administration officials have had preliminary discussions about how to carry out an attack on Iran if needed to follow through on Trump’s threats, including what sites might be targeted, U.S. officials said.

One option being discussed is a large-scale aerial strike on multiple Iranian military targets, one of the officials said. Another of the officials said there wasn’t a consensus on what course of action to take, and no military equipment or personnel had been moved in preparation for a strike.

Taking over Venezuela appears to be a perfectly working great idea, might as well do Iran as well. Practice makes perfeKt.

Can't wait until we actually take it over with boots on the ground.

I like the Marines, but I'm just not quite sure that 2,500 of them can take over Venezuela or even Caracas, but we'll have to wait and see!

If Iranian military begins killing civilians, I think we should consider many options from arming civilians to eliminating military targets to trying to distract the Iranian military with joint operations with other countries.
