Tennessee now claims 6 as well.  The entire time I lived in Knox, I never heard anyone claim more than the '51 and '98 championships.  I noticed it on the stadium wall the year my family and I moved back to Texas in 2017.  This would have been at the spring game.

Tennessee's 1967 title claim is underrated in its stupidity. Lost to UCLA during the regular season (the same UCLA that O.J. Simpson's USC squad famously defeated to rise to the No. 1 ranking and win the national championship) and then lost to blOU in the Sugar Bowl. Finished the season with a 9-2 record and solidly behind one-loss USC, Oklahoma and UCLA.

I've got to say, I'm loving this confident, disdainful fire spitting Satya. More of him, please.

I continue to be thankful the Texas admin is not so thin-skinned and insecure to have to claim fake titles.

We won our 4 fair and square and were absolutely deserved.  We don't have to make them up because some obsolete magazine or totally gamed computer ranked us #1 eight decades ago. We have actual trophies.

Same with fake conference championships - you know who you are.

Some schools have no shame.

But Texas had a brief brush with similar stupidity.

I recall during the Mack Brown years one time the official Texas football website had added a “South Division championship” to that season’s record.
It didn’t take long for that embarassing idiocy to be noticed and ignominiously removed.

Seems like I vaguely recall seeing that and thinking what the fuck.

That was my recollection as well

It didn't last long but it was 100% us being (justifiably) mad that we beat OU and didn't get to go to the Big 12 CCG

It was, if I recall correctly, posted only in the locker room for the players. It made it into a photograph that was published.

Texas in no way claimed a title in any official way. I think Brown posting for the players is okay as if to say, "we know who was best and we proved it." Morale and motivation and all that.

It's not Longhorn toxicity ruining these idiots; it's Aggie toxicity. Make shit up about Texas then embrace it as truth.

We don't even have to work at recruiting, we just send big checks. If Aggies say it, it must be true!

Dumbasses.

We just sent blank checks and proceeded to lose like 8 recruiting battles in a row like 2 months ago?

I'm not saying there weren't good justifications for the resentment, but the rules were set up before the season began. Beat Texas Tech and none of that shit matters. I wasn't happy with how it went down, but it's not like it was out of our control.

The board's hang up on this is very aggy.  It was a three way tie.

My issue was the bullshit voting for that last poll.

Yep. Was the rule stupid? Yes. But it was the rule. But the outcome was rigged by the voting - anti-Texas voting (or people doing Bob a favor) by Leach and Briles that affected the BCS rankings that kept OU ahead of us by just enough to get the South’s spot in the CCG

As we all know, Tech should have been eliminated by virtue of being the lowest ranked and it should have gone H2H. Yes we knew the rules but a few bad actors affected the outcome

Yep, a B12 coach bullshit downvoted Texas enough to make a difference in that poll.
Briles?

All this to say fuck the Big 12 and there is absolutely no rational reason to miss being in that pathetic conference. I wish the very worst for that conference and all its members present and future.

I guess I missed where Leach was actively trying to tank us. Was he advocating for Tech by voting against Texas or was he trying to give OU a boost? Serious question.

If he was indeed attempting to unfairly sabotage us, then I question what is our board's favorable view with the now dead pirate.

Realistically, Briles and Leach never touched their ballots.  It was someone under the SID who had an axe to grind against big bad mean ol' Texas.  So glad we are no longer every team's super bowl even if we are in an illiterate conference.

These retroactive non-titles are nothing short of pitiful and reek of desperation.  Including you, Bama.

It's particularly pathetic for Bama since they have so many legit championships. My favorite to bring up in coversation is the championship they claim from 1941. They got shutout by both Vanderbilt and Mississippi State, and finished #20 in the AP poll, but put it on the wall anyway!

The way I remember it, both Leach and Briles had Texas ranked lower than everyone else, outside of the top 5; it ensured that OU was ahead of Texas and the coaches poll impacted the BCS standings or whatever the tiebreaker was. I think Briles had Texas like #7 or something stupid. I assumed the reason was because he believed that Texas winning another title was not good for his program.

At the time, the Big 12 coaches who had a vote were: Mack, Turner Gill, Dan Hawkins, Leach, Pelini, Pinkel, Briles

https://www.burntorangenation.com/2008/12/7/684245/how-the-coaches-voted

Leach and Briles both conveniently had OU 1 and Texas 5
Mack had us 2 and OU 3

We ended up 1 point behind OU in thew Week 15 rankings that decided who got to play in the Big 12 CCG as the South rep.

One. Fucking. Point.,
