I'm taking my older kid to see Phantom Menace today. Yeah, the prequels aren't great put there's nothing like seeing the Wars in a theater. There's supposed to be a preview of the Acolyte at the end. I believe it's the fight scene between the knife girl and Trinity.

Many, many people think R1 is better than Empire.

To me that would be like ranking Creed 3 over Rocky. I mean, it's Star Wars. It has to be in the top two, and only because Empire is so incredible.

Did you think it would age like fine wine?

I thought it might age better compared to the sequel trilogy. Lucas at least gets credit for trying something different. The dialogue, Jar Jar, and some of the acting based on the terrible dialogue are really the only parts of Phantom Menace I take issue with.

Take Jar Jar and that dumb ass ground battle out of Menace and it’s a pretty solid flick.

Then you’re left with a political thriller about a lush planet that will starve to death if it doesn’t get off planet supplies for 24 hours and a side plot about an annoying kid you wouldn’t mind being trampled to death by a taun taun.

I also watched the Phantom Menace this weekend and came to the realization that it would have been a better movie if none of the shit they did in the movie happened. Literally none of the scenes worked even Darth Maul was stupid when you compare him to Clone Wars and rebels Darth Maul.

My reaction is still "Lucas had 15 years to write that and that's the story he came up with?".

"Oh no, because of the blockade, all of our people are starving and dying!"

Where? On that sound stage over there, behind the blue screen?

Its set over 100 years before that

Understood. I just hope they aren't trying to flesh-out a backstory of some of JJ's dud characters, as a tie-in to the current timeline.

Trade federation and a political blockade? George really nailed “Star Wars is for kids”

Yeah the who owns Star Wars debate will always be a thing. I don’t think it’s a generational battle. Do quality work and it will be universally loved. Slap something together with poor writing, lack of vision, add poor casting and it’ll split the fanbase. Very young fans liked Rise of Skywalker. Everybody loves Andor, and to a lesser degree Mando.

I always felt George saying Star Wars was for kids was his way to nullify any criticism of the prequels. Sure George, poop and fart jokes are for kids. Pod racing with a young Anakin is for kids. Starvation, slavery, stabbings, people getting cut in half...not really for kids.

And Rogue One, even when not compared to the sequels, is great - tightly edited, well-acted, everything is tied up at the end.

We kinda saw some of it with the Return of The Jedi and the little Ewoks. It’s ironic he says that now with the two best films from each trilogy leaning in the more adult/darker direction.

Y’all dorks from the 70’s love to shit on ROTJ for the Ewoks’ 5 minutes of screen time in what might the most emotional and character evolving movie of the franchise. It brings conclusion to Vader and Palpatine, and the nerds forget it also gave you Slave Leia, whose action figure you used to beat it to every day after you got off the school bus. ESB and ROTJ are 1a and 1b to me. In my stupid opinion, ANH is only loved and important because it was first, not because it was a better movie than the others. I actually rewatch Episodes 1, 3, and 7 far more than ANH, where Luke is a whiney sand boy, the first half of the movie drags on, and gave us a Obi Wan-Vader duel that is epically retarded in hindsight.

Best lightsaber fight, best space battle, slave Leia, Solo rescue, Jabba sail barge escape, speeder bikes, Vader redemption, death of Yoda…but people love to whine about the Ewoks. It’s greatness.
