Of note is that Pickens is on the last year of his contract. Probably gonna cost in the neighborhood of $25 million to franchise tag him for 2026. I assume with a decent year that he'll be looking for something like Tee Higgins money for an extension (4 years, $115 million, $41 million guaranteed).

George Pickens's catch percentage was 61.3% in 2024 with the Steelers. He had 65 catches from 106 targets. His drop percentage was also 13.2%, the highest among receivers with 100+ targets.

In Pickens defense, his QBs have been… dogshit to put it kindly

How George Pickens performs and behaves with the Cowboys is going to tell us a whole bunch about whether Brian Schottenheimer was the right hire.  Schottenheimer either gets Pickens in line and he forms the best WR duo in the league with CeeDee, or Schottenheimer fails to control him in the circus-like environment of the Dallas Cowboys and the trouble he causes far outweighs the production and headaches.  It's going to be fascinating.  Gotta give it up to Jerry for taking a big swing here.

Or it tell us what Tomlin lets players get away with...

OK, the price wasn't terrible for the quality of player. He will make a big difference on offense, if he's not suspended or something.

Great talent, total asshole. If it were a possible deep playoff season ahead I would like it a lot better. Or if the Cowboys had a top quality playmaking RB locked up for a few years, I would like it a lot better.

Not sure I want him around long term unless he has a total transformation as a team guy and can tone down his anger and disruptive behavior. At least he's not accuse of sexual assault, drunkass hit and run or something...yet. Maybe not being in Pittsburgh will be good for him.

I'm excited to see him make some plays, though.

Forget the behavior issues. This is why it’s probably going to end up being a stupid trade.

Not so fast. Once you take into account the future contract or potential behavior issues it could end up being a terrible move.

Counterpoint: Other Steelers receivers who left the Steelers and have been good in the NFL is pretty high rate. Mike Tomlin has a tendency to let players get away with a lot....

This is true. As much as fans like to trash Dak, he's getting a huge qb upgrade throwing to him. And I don't mean Joe Milton.

Cowboys still need a backup qb.

Pickens has also been in pretty shitty WR rooms as well, not a lot on the opposite side to require much attention. Lots of come and go dudes that get some false expectations after a decent game or two, but turn out to be JAG receivers. Now he has Lamb, until he has his arm ripped off his shoulder.

Cowboys need somebody he trusts in the locker room to get him to chill.

I don’t seem to recall a ton of locker room drama considering some of the shadier characters we’ve had over the years. The circus usually comes from Jerry and his yes men. Im good with this trade. We need a damn RB now if Shotty has any chance of exceeding my expectations which are pretty damn low.

Pickens was on the fantasy football winners team. I remember him going off for a td or 2 each game he had ass QBs. Not saying dak not ass sometimes.  But I’m intrigued.

I agree on the contract, but they gave up a 5th for a guy who was one of the worst WRs in the entire NFL in Mingo.

Pickens has talent and has been a decent producer despite terrible QB play.

Oldass Russ is borderline dogshit, not good deep, has gotten punchy in the pocket. That's pretty decent in that shitass offense.

Hopefully, now stupidass blabber about getting back Amari Cooper is gone for good.

Posted

And for Dak haters, he's used to catching shitty passes, so he's a perfect fit.

Again, not totally thrilled with the trade, but worth a shot for a player that is a real talent and will make a lot of plays. Worth the roll of the dice for his issues.

I'll say this, too, for some more upsdie. The Cowboys showed some patience here that is encouraging. They've been talking to the Steelers about this for a good while. This is one of those that they could have easily given a straight up 2 and maybe another pick for Pickens. They waited to see what the draft brought in, and when it didn't pan out that way they didn't rush to pay up to get the deal done quickly.

We'll see how it works out, but if it flops, at this point the damage isn't that bad. Worse case is he'll get a huge deal and than start lollygagging after he got paid, or he'll get hurt. The Cowboys have time to fuck it up in true Jerryworld style.

Honestly glad it’s not two firsts.

We fix the OL yet or are we going to have another season of no running game and asking Dak to generate everything while running for his life?

Posted

In games where Pickens was the leading receiver, Pittsburgh was 7-2 last year.  And they were 1-2 in games he missed.

Pickens + 6 for 3rd + 5th is basically recuperating the 2nd they used for him in 2022.  He would not be on Pittsburgh's roster after 2025, so he likely garners a compensatory pick best case at #100.  This trade will get (1) him out of the locker room and (2) the Steelers a pick around 80.

Interior looks better and deeper for sure. The tackles still seem like they suck, unless Smith moves to left tackle. Then only one of them probably sucks.

I think Pickens has a ton of talent but, he's been a total jagoff.

In his defense though, the PCs have been shit & the QB/OL play has not been extremely good.

If the Cowboys can get him straight they have a damned good receiver.

maybe being the last year of his contract might be helpful.  he can be a dickhead, cause trouble and affect his next contract or he can shape up and show the league he's ready for the next big deal.

taking the glass half full look obviously...

As much as the cowboys make me sick I like this pick up.  Our offense skill players are the surly overweight assholes of nfl. At least now someone opposite cd will command some attention even if he has his moments you have to account for him. Dak for all his issues would shit all over the Steelers QB room

Pickens has WR#1 type talent. But his body language just sucks, and not sure about his work ethic. I hope it was just a case of he got his spirit broken with shitty QB play. At this point I’ll take whatever, and when it inevitably turns into a shit show circus at least it will be entertaining.

I hope they aren't expecting CeeDee to mentor Pickens on behaving right on the field, because CeeDee is the first motherfucker to have terrible body language whenever there's adversity.

Other than that, I have no problem with making this trade.

Dallas already has a reputation of being a team of Pre-Madonna’s…

Adding a(nother) mercurial assholish Pre-Madonna WR to the mix ain’t gonna change that rep

So, like 1982 or so? Do you go by when she became incredibly popular or when she was grinding it out as a relative unknown?

Google “George Pickens bad plays”. There is lots of evidence this guy sucks ass and is a loser.

You can do that for basically every player. Including Lamb and Mahomes.

Huh?  They've basically spent most of the offseason getting boy scouts in here.

if he's horrible or bad here there won't be a contract. There WILL, however, be a pretty damned good Comp Pick coming, maybe even a 3rd rounder, which makes this trade basically a wash if he fucks himself out of Dallas.

Yeah and they spent all offseason getting "the right kind of guys".  Adding a dawg and an asshole might actually be a good thing.

Exactly.

They drafted "Good guys" and signed "good guys"  This is a shot at taking a very talented WR, who produced over 900+ yard every season with dog shit QB and a new OC every single year he's been there, and seeing if it works.

Worst case, they get one year from him, he's great, and the open market overpays him to the point they get a 3rd round comp pick for him(so basically trade a 3rd for him and get one back) OR he sucks, they don't resign him, and they STILL get a 4th/5th Comp pick for taking a swing.

In no way this is a bad trade unless he murder Lamb/Dak.

They got Blue

Posted

Keep the TE in to block and you got Blue, Turpin, CD, and Pickens running routes. One of those dudes gonna get open. Will Dak be able to find em and get it to them? We’ll see. But somehow I’m optimistic about Dallas on offense for once.

they also got Phil Mafah who’s a beast RB

they got Dane Fowler and another rusher

they drafted another inside backer and an outside backer that are good

Really they just need their secondary to stay healthy and they will be ok there too

They got Blue

Can he play in the NFL? I saw a player who couldn’t be trusted as a ball carrier. They stopped handing the ball off to him, especially leftZ He’s smallish and couldnt pass protect real well. He could catch out of the backfield. That’s not enough.

Blue is arguably their 3rd best weapon as of right now.

And what position will he play? Because he can’t run between the tackles and he cant run left. And he won’t be able to pass protect in the pros.
