It made sense to schedule those games while in an inferior conference with a 4 team playoff format. There was immense benefit to be won from the risk of that game.

We're in the opposite situation now. In the best conference with a 12 (soon to be 16) team playoff and more potential games.

I'm not saying to schedule an FCS team. I'm saying don't schedule a national title contender. Schedule a Wake Forest or Rutgers or Colorado.

User name checks out.  Get that weak, scared attitude out of here.

It's definitely an unnecessary risk, and all the goobers here wanting tough early season OOC games will be the first to whine and want to fire the coach when they miss the playoffs.

Sark is building deep teams, but this is still more games to win a title than before. The team was beaten down last season after the OSU game, and that was with a relatively easy SEC schedule. That extra OOC game against a top opponent when you already play in the toughest conference will just wear them down even more than necessary heading down the stretch of conference and into the playoffs.

I'd rather play OSU in the playoffs (minus the choking goober QB) than in game 1 or 2 of the season. It's just good strategy.

They don't want the first live fire for a young back-up to be taken in a hostile environment against a highly talented team. The Troy guy was a free take who does not threaten the room. Owens is getting paid to be a quality back-up who could take over due to long term injury. Troy guy isn't giving Texas that kind of answer.

Interesting. So, helmet comes off or bell rung = Troy guy time. A game or longer = Owens? Is that the general idea?

If you think an early season loss to someone like Ohio State will keep Texas out of the 16 team playoff, then you also think Texas is going to lose a couple more games throughout the season.  A one-loss Texas that won the SEC and dropped an early season behemoth game doesn't have to worry about being on the wrong side of the bubble.  Conversely, a Texas team with three losses wasn't going to win a title anyway.  Scheduling big time marquee games only helps our brand, exposure, and recruiting even if we don't win them all.

As you said, the system has changed, and a 16 team playoff changes the calculus of scheduling.  Your concerns are more appropriate for the former 4 team system.

If Texas would have lost to that shitty Michigan team, there’s a better argument for keeping them out this past season. Swap that win for one of the GA games.

They don't want to Garrett Gilbert any of our talented depth in the QB room.

We used to have offseason talk about, you know, the team. That was cool.

I’ll start: Who’s gonna be the backup QB? Same guy in August as in January or no?

No spring football has turned this board into a kick in the nuts

It seems kind of strange that they would trust Owens with multiple games or the season, but not a few snaps in Columbus. Yeah, hope it doesn’t matter.

No one wants to torch a young QB's confidence for the season in a quarter or two by letting an amped up Buckeye defense go headhunting and ballhawking while his arm is cold, is what I'm assuming he means.

I found this ESPN article linked on the Sooner 247 board. The mod over there posted it to talk about the Superman play, which I'll never be over, but Vince.Young.Scores. is #3. I think it should be #1, but I can defend Kick Six and Statue of Liberty as #1 and #2 as well. Anyway, didn't see the article posted anywhere and thought the readers of this thread would find it fun. Not really worthy of its own thread, I don't think.

Fall camps will be here soon enough.

I really do think with the increased usage of the transfer portal and the level of work they do with the incoming players over the summer you really don't get a truly clear picture until you are a couple weeks out from the season.

Granted, there are a ton of magazines,  websites, people on social media churning out content about their projections for the season based upon their own "unique analysis or algorithm" will scratch the itch for some, but even the most insider reports on how those freshmen receivers are looking in 7 on 7 and work outs really won't mean much until they put on pads and start show they can handle the physicality of the db's, read coverages, etc...

Things will be going 1000mph for any QB who is brought in under the circumstances it would require for a backup qb to play in Columbus.  Might has well have that be someone with college experience if it comes to that.

After that game though, there should be plenty of opportunities for Owens to get reps and build confidence in the remainder of the non-conference slate.

If Owens has to play then the season is pretty much lost anyways unless he's some kinda wunderkind.

He's a sophomore backup, you can still have a fun season with him. Just not as fun.

I'm still po'ed a bit over our coaches coming out of halftime of the CCG and being surprised by UGa having a basically untested backup QB run the ball down our throats while our D apparently kept playing the same plan, i.e. "no wories, QB can't run". I couldn't believe no one noticed Beck getting his arm wrecked at the end of the first half, and maybe worse, how long it took to react to Stockton's running.

Having Caldwell available if Arch goes down... not all warm and fuzzy, but better than a sharp stick eye poke. Absent information from spring, it almost seems like Trey might not've showed up like we would need. It's a tough act to follow - we seemed happier campers to have Arch behind Ewers than we are with Trey behind Arch.

I hate the offseason.

The offseason must be miserable if you keep obsessing over losses from last year, which you seem to be doing. Maybe stop that.

My approach: Damn, we're coming off two great seasons and have tons of reasons to look forward to the new one upcoming. Can't wait!

But, you do you my man.

Who are your big time marquee teams?

There are two parts to this scheduling equation.  There’s a good chance you see some programs willing to risk a loss and some that are not.  For many of those teams, they may be better off playing a mid tier SEC team as their win probability goes up.  I’m not sure other SEC teams are willing to schedule 50/50 games.

Outside of the Ohio States, Bamas, Georgias, Oregons, and Texas, the more realistic goal for most teams is make the playoffs and build from there.  And that early season loss accompanied by a championship game loss may leave little wiggle room for all those teams.

I don’t think OSU will be afraid to schedule.  I don’t think Texas will be afraid.  UGa and Bama are SEC so that doesn’t matter.  Who else will be willing?

A 3 loss team is certainly a possibility to win it.  A game 1 loss and a championship game loss only leaves 1 more out of 10.  If you consider that a virtual impossibility, why are we expanding?

I would mark my calendar today to watch us play at Oregon.  Also, don’t care if we get left out with 3 losses.  Don’t take my speculation here as me advocating for weaker scheduling.  I’m not.

Thank you for your concern about my welfare.

Your concern is misplaced - I am not obsessed with losses, nor with wins for that matter. I would have thought that "a bit po'ed" would be inferred as considerably less tham "obsessed"

It is gruntling to hear of your approach; however, you seem to be in a limbo of impatience. Yes, you can wait, and since there seems to be no realistic alternative (surely comatose is more likely but less appealing than time travel), I would counsel you to relax and... wait. Or not - but you do you.

“1 more out of 10” should be “1 more out of 11”.

I think “big time marquee teams” gets a little conflated in these discussions for most people. If Texas is scheduling better half P4 teams or Notre Dame, that’s cool with me and I’d bet many others. I could get my head around Purdue or Arizona or Wake Forest, but I’d prefer Michigan State, Kansas State, NC State and higher in those conferences.

Well damn your math is correct.         Maybe I was just rounding for ease.

All those schools you mentioned would be good on the schedule with a mix of variation, newness and historical opponents.  Not exactly sure my reasoning but I’d like a Northwestern.  Maybe paired with historical mid-tier P4.

Wisconsin and Washington are the two I'd drop everything to go to the games and third isn't close. Colorado maybe, since I wasn't really around for when they were a conference game.

Those would be great series based on the trips, stadium locales, and general atmosphere (Wisconsin with a better atmosphere, though).

I know I won't get many backers here, but I'd love to terrorize Nebraska in Lincoln again. That was always fun.

I've been to quiet a few Wisconsin games and most of the B1G. Had a close friend who ran a tailgate there until he moved out of Chicago.

Of the B1G games I've been to, its definitely the best tailgate scene and general fun time. Despite being a t-shirt Michigan fan, Id probably put Sparty as the second best tailgate scene.

Amusingly, I attended games at both stadiums with fellow Surly posters, which could have greatly altered my experience in the positive.

Well, in the past we've come off of a couple of great seasons but I knew the roster was a bit fucked and so I wrung my hands quite a bit.

Our talent acquisition has matched - maybe even exceeded a bit - our results on the field. I feel like we have the potential to be entering another golden age in football.

This has been the funnest off season since the late 2000s. It's so great to be legitimately relevant in college football. It's crazy to me how often that has not been the case in my lifetime. I do not take it for granted.

The real reason Caldwell is here is is because secretly. Owens is better than arch.  If arch gets dinged or we go up big. Owens comes in and shows out we have a qb controversy again and sark don’t want it.

bring on Caldwell a jag and we good

Quite the random placement of periods. Or non-placement.

That's the exact two I was thinking of as well. I would also travel to a game with Minnesota but I understand that matchup wouldn't be quite as "marquee"

Edit: can't believe I forgot Oregon. That's another one I'd travel for

My daughter is a rising sophomore at Oregon. I’d never been to Eugene until last summer. It’s a fantastic college town. I need to get there for a game.

Also, my daughter is an intern at UO’s athletic department, and she’s going to be working all the home football games this season. She also worked the Eugene super regionals for baseball and softball last month and said those were pretty cool.

I actually liked Corvallis more than Eugene when my brother was looking at Pac schools, but for a football trip UO would definitely be a bigger deal. It's just not as cool as the lakefront stadium in Seattle.
