Its getting Longlegs hype, and I liked that movie so my loins are gilded.

I bought the AMC discount package for 13 bucks a year ago I'm using that as an excuse to get my ass to the movies more

Fuck yes. Might be my favorite horror since hereditary. Fucking riot

Only complaint is the commercials/previews being 28 minutes long when the normal 20 minutes is already absurd

If you really want to have fun, do a double feature of Barbarian at home then go see Weapons

This has long legs written all over it. Massive curated critic hype to be followed by audience letdown.

Longlegs was cool.

Lol yeah, I guess I missed the Longlegs audience letdown

Longlegs tried to do two movies in one, a silence of the lambs type and then a blumhouse horror, and the sum didn’t add up to a great movie

Longlegs put me to sleep.

Saw Weapons tonight and it was a lot of fun.  The mystery turns out to be kind of dumb but the final comeuppance was great.

I thought the 1st part of Barbarian was good and the 2nd half was a different, rather shitty movie.  Will I like this one?

Yeah, overall I enjoyed it, but second part was quite cliched relative to the first.

The Gladys character was super captivating, something very nostalgic or familiar about her performance.

She must have developed her witchcraft skills when her family built that supernatural baseball field in a corn field in Iowa.

Loved it. The humor/horror mix was perfect - I feel like it's what Cregger was trying to do with Barbarian, but couldn't quite get it (and I liked Barbarian a lot).

Spoiler

When I was in the restroom after the movie, this group of girls came in after me and one was all "I think it's, like, a commentary on our society's dependence on cameras and like, how even though they're everywhere you like, still can't know everything." I don't think so - as my son (he's 17) said afterwards, it's about a witch doing witchy things. I'm sure someone will draw some broader commentary that's relevant, but I like the simple interpretation. Some random thoughts below.

I cannot wait to get a gif of the kids chasing Gladys at the end. Everyone in the theater was dying laughing during that whole scene. And I never would have thought it was Amy Madigan.

Loved Gladys's whole "Raggedy Ann on crack" aesthetic. It was perfect for that character.

Speaking of crack, Austin Abrams was hilarious.

There were a lot of fun details around Marcus and his partner. They had matching (but not identical) Mickey Mouse shirts, and apparently only ate food that little kids eat? They had something like six hot dogs on that tray before Gladys showed up. I'd have liked to hang out with those guys. Before all the head smashing, of course.

It's almost as if Hollywood makes an original, well done movie, people will go see it.  Interesting.

Oh well, back to another super hero movie or a shitty, bloated 10 hour, 8 episode streaming drama that should be 1.5 hours.

When budgets are mentioned, is that just production budget or does that include marketing?  I like the idea that you don’t need 200 million dollars to make a good movie, but marketing costs can be whatever number you want them to be on top of the production cost.

Horror also kills it at the theater if any level of hype materializes, and the ROIs are great because they're typically not expensive because they aren't reliant on star actors or directors

They usually they don't include it. Also remember that the studio only gets about half of the box office

Per Variety, the marketing for this was $38m

This movie will have legs in theaters though

Loved it. The final sequence was perfection. Loved the out of sequence storytelling.

So was she a witch or a gypsy who stole people's essence to stay young. The only thing I didn't get was what was her plans with the school kids? It seems none of them were harmed or sacrificed. The kids chasing her down and ripping her apart was one of the best villain endings in a long time.

Spoiler

Yes, she just feeds off younger energy or soul or whatever to stay alive, until she takes it all up and then moves on. They went heavy handed on the parasite mention earlier in the film.

As an aside, my theater was fucking rolling when the meth head kept sprinting back up to go after Brolin. True slapstick

Gotcha. I guess that's why some kids were learning to talk again and some weren't. She had drained less of them, maybe? Daughter and I were laughing later that the principal and his husband were Disney adults with matching Mickey and Minnie shirts when Gladys comes over.

Pedro Pascal was supposed to play the Brolin role and dropped out. I think that's a good thing for this movie. I like Pedro but Brolin was so great in this.

Yeah, I’m not a Pedro hater, but Brolin was perfect for this.

minor continuity error?

Spoiler

When the cop drags the junkie out of the cruiser, it's night time/evening and he's been in there all day.  But when Alex comes home after school, the cruiser is there and both the cop and the junkie have been zombified.  If it were just after school, the junkie would still be in the car. If it were the next day, after the cop/junkie arrival, Alex would have noticed them and not been surprised by the cop car or the cop being there when he came home from school.
