Foo Fighters or The Killers?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

A little offshoot from the Johntay Cook thread (obviously).

I was kind of dogging The Foo Fighters (although I've never disliked them) and had the thought that one of their contemporaries - The Killers - are obviously a better band. Now I'm going through some Foo Fighters stuff I haven't heard in awhile and there are some great fucking tracks that I forgot about and I'm not sure.

I think I would still vote The Killers - mainly because I think they are a bit more original/unique and a bit more important pop-culturally  - but I'm guessing this board slants in the other direction (although I know there are some big Killers fans here).

I think it's worth the question.

And - I have seen both of them (The Killers twice). Both very good live (RIP Hawkins).

Is this really a question?  I've got one: Led Zeppelin or Triumph?

That's an absurd analogy. Neither of these bands touch Led Zeppelin.

I'll mark you down for The Foo.

More Killers excellence.

This is from 2021. I think the last time the Foo did anything this good Obama was in office.

Dude, you're fast becoming the Derka of the music board.

Because I'm offending a bunch of Foo Fighters fans?

I can live with that.

I don't even like Nirvana that much.

wasting light was certainly the last great album from the Foo.  sonic highways was dave trying to do a concept album.  couple of very good tracks but kind of like when some band "tries" to write a protest song.  Concrete and Gold/Medicine at Midnigh had a couple of great songs between them

the last album is actually damn good with 4 or 5 really good to great songs.

The Killers are damn good band but they don't approach the Foo/Grohl.  It's music though so to each his own.

Thank you for a legitimate reply.

I just don't understand who doesn't like a song like this.

well there's "hey this song is good and I like it"  and then there's "the foo haven't done ANYTHING GOOD since Obama" where it went off the tracks and is patently false.  Anyone that thinks the Killers aren't a damn good band isn't listening.

I would also say the Killers aren't really a Foo contemporary.  they release their first album a decade after Grohl did.  it is more Green Day, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, etc. for the Foo.

I don't care if you prefer The Killers to Foo Fighters, but in my mind when I consider the take that they're a better band or more original or more unique I just laugh my ass off.

But they haven't.

I just gave you that the last album had 4-5 really good to great songs on it.  and a few other great songs after wasting light.  you said they haven't done anything good and you are posting songs from Sam's Town which is 20 years old.

Yeah well most of your opinions here are shitty anyway.

Let me be more clear:

The Killers can't play anywhere near as well as the Foo Fighters, and their songs are simplistic garage blues rehash whereas Grohl writes music with fairly complex harmonic progessions overlaid with interesting melodies and (sometimes) evocative lyrics.  Did that help?

In defense of @ztejas, it just goes to show music is very personal.  And that’s what makes it great.  I think my very favorite musician of all time is Elton John.  Some may agree, many will not.  And my Doors post triggered many.  But whatever floats your boat.  You can’t judge music tastes, because it speaks to everyone differently.  The Foo v The Killers is a comparison that shouldn’t be made.  None should be compared to another.  What you like is your own call.

I don't need defense here but I appreciate it.

Also I fucking love Elton John.

YMMV.

Ah, got it.  I'm really not up for the debate tonight, I'm just gonna spin some Twenty One Pilots and dig on their world class drummer.

Have you ever listened to Sam's Town front to back? I bet you haven't.

Go do it and get back to me.

Is that the one that was released before Obama took office?

I’m not defending anyone. My point is that, more than any art form, music is personal to the individual.  I am a child of classic rock.  There are folks that hate The Eagles.  I should wish them to die in a fire.  But if you don’t like the Eagles, so be it.  Why should I care?  But if you don’t like “The Godfather” or “ Goodfellas” then you are mental.  Music is different. Movies are more objective than subjective.

It's the one that had this banger on it.

It's not a bad song, but I wouldn't call it a "banger".  I think it's repetitive and seemingly an attempt to simultaneously ape The Psychedelic Furs and, oh I don't know, Morrissey fronting the E Street Band?  The recording is pinched and nasal and the production/arrangement is rudimentary.

All of that is OK.  I'm glad there are artists you like and that work for you.  I disagree with your thread premise, but there's room for that.  I do think you made one or two objectively false statements, though.

I would challenge that they are really contemporaries. It’s close, but Foo Fighters are much more of a gen x band and Killers are strongly millennial aligned.

Purely regarding the importance and prevalence of their music in my life and nothing else, it’s easily the Killers for me. Neither band is one of “my” bands but… I remember the footos video as a kid and the foo fighters have always been around, but those first two Killers albums were Very Big Deals for people my age.

I take no position on which is better as that is a rudimentary question when discussing art.  I would posit that there may have been no Killers were it not for Foo keeping the genre commercially viable post-grunge.

I went to two different THE KILLERS concerts while living in Buenos Aires. Never saw the Fighters Foo, nor ever thought about it.

I like several Foo Fighters songs, I think, but can probably name fewer than 5. Probably the same thing with The Killers.

Both Killers shows I went to, I went with a girl. I don’t think that I know the kind of girls who would want to go to a Foo Fighters show… image.png.2797ef06ac327dd9614cfab155e428c7.png

👆🤷‍♂️

So I’m going with The Killers, because I prefer to go to shows with females rather than just dudes.

Eh, I'm not so sure about that. I'm a late Gen X, and the Foo Fighters are still just the new band the drummer from Nirvana started to me. I do agree with the notion that a lot the perception comes down to timing, especially when talking about one's formative years of teendom and early adulthood. I will also allow a lot of my musical opinions where possibly baked earlier than most, in elementary and junior high.

Foo Fighters made me that Dave was no where near the thing that made Nirvana great. Theyd have done just fine with any other number of drummers. His music is pablum.
