I get it but a lot of it was hindsight. I can't remember the thoughts on Payton when he was here and if there was any rumblings of him being the next coach. I don't think there was. Parcells was definitely up there in age by then and I would hope they were having talks of what would be the plan after Parcells. Jerry only brought in Parcells as a splash hire to get that stadium built. I don't think either of them liked working with each other.

Payton was the main guy who kept Romo on the practice squad, though. Him and Bill saw something in him but he was about to be cut until good ol Quincy Carter got arrested for weed and Romo got his spot. I do think Payton working with Romo as HC would have been way better than Wade/Garrett.

I don’t buy that. Payton tried to trade for Romo when he was Saints HC.

Saints called Payton and offered him the job. At the time, it didn't seem Parcells would be gone after that year. He didn't want to pass up a head coaching position, even if it was the Saints. Dallas didn't seem interested in making him the head coach. Don't think there was any bad blood, just an assistant getting the call to become a head coach.

This. He and the Jones are still on very good terms.

I think what Vic was saying is that Romo was going to be cut, but that Payton kept him around, at least initially, by putting him on the practice squad. (not that Sean demoted him to the practice squad). They saw something in him. Romo gave us some thrills. He completed that pass to Dez at the two yard line against GB, which Dez extended toward the goal. Any decent replay official would have recognized that the ball was down by contact, but we had a replay official who was a life-long Steelers fan. Go figure. Thanks again, fucking NFL.

Payton is a really good coach, but also a douche.

Payton inherited a 5-12 team which he took to 8-9, then 10-7 and a playoff birth. They just beat the undefeated Eagles with 18 fourth quarter points. The Eagles had 7 second half points, so apparently they have a defense too. They gotta be pretty happy in the mile high city.

He’s an awesome coach.

I find the narrative on him and McCarthy to be intriguing. By many accounts, McCarthy is a subpar coach who hitched his wagon to Rodgers for a ring. One single Super Bowl appearance, one win. Other NFC championship appearances but all losses.

The above is pretty much Payton's career in New Orleans exactly, yet he's regarded as a great coach.

I think both of them are the same. Brees and Rodgers masked a lot of their deficiencies. Their tenure after the Saints and Packers, they didn't have those QBs and see the results.

We go to Carolina next week, then host Washington. Then guess what... we're in Denver breathing in that thin air. If you've ever gone from sea level to Colorado and, without acclimating, played any athletics, you know what I'm talking about. Good fucking luck.

That getting worked up over Carolina after watching a meaningless 4th quarter Cowboys defense today is…a choice.

Okay? Welcome to the board...especially on a game day, and during a game.

Have you seen the Longhorn Game Thread?  We all get pretty worked up.

I turned 41 last month. In my lifetime, I can't remember Dallas beating Denver. Had to look it up and Dallas has beaten Denver twice in my lifetime, both in the 90s SB run. No idea what it is about Denver when we play them. The craziest of the matchups was in 2013 when Romo went head to head against Manning in that 51-48 shootout.
