Radioactive wasps discovered at Savannah River Site

Highly radioactive wasp nest found at Savannah River Site

AIKEN, S.C. - A radioactive wasp nest was discovered earlier this month in South Carolina by workers at the Savannah River Site, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Employees who routinely check radiation levels at the Savannah River Site near Aiken found a wasp nest on July 3 on a post near tanks where liquid nuclear waste is stored, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Energy.

The nest had a radiation level 10 times what is allowed by federal regulations, officials said.

The workers sprayed the nest with insect killer, removed it and disposed of it as radioactive waste. No wasps were found, officials said.

Oh great, they escaped. Now we got radioactive fucking wasps roaming the countryside to add to the list of shit gone sideways.

There are federal regulations that define the maximum allowable radioactivity of a wasp nest?

Always knew they had high levels of resistance, but this is wild:

Insects can survive radiation doses that are lethal to humans by a large factor. For example, cockroaches can tolerate 900-1000 grays, while doses of 3-6 grays can be fatal to humans.
