What is with all the "if Sark leaves for the NFL" talk?

The next time a head football coach leaves Texas to take another job will be the first.

(Does not count if the coach is pushed out/fired)

Sark was an OC in the NFL already and it wasn't that great.  There's only a handful of head coaches in the NFL who call their own plays on offense, and even fewer actually elite ones (McVay, Reid...)

He has perfect relationships with his bosses, full control of the program and full alignment with the money guys, an elite NIL program and has everything rolling

It's so dumb, it hurts.  Our fans actively look for things to freak out about that don't exist

Oh good grief, no one is saying Sark is headed to the NFL. Athletic Directors and Boards of Regents have to plan for scenarios even if they are only remotely possible. They did a few years ago.  Nowhere in the last two pages did anyone say he was leaving for the NFL.  The whole point was that Traylor was given a heads up a few years ago that he might be in play for one of the bigger jobs down the line, so working hard to beat those teams is pretty important to him. That’s it. That’s the only point. The reading comprehension on the last page is ridiculous. Jesus. I feel like I’m conversing with a bunch of ADHD teenagers.

Traylor was being wooed by TCU and maybe? Tech when Sarkisian was going 5-7. They cut a deal in the contract extension for him at UTSA that diminished the buyout if he took a job at another school in the UT system or ATM system. That wasn't an accident and you can go look it up. I added the ATM system in there, but I think that's right.

Have things changed? Sure. Texas is in a totally different place these days. Likely/hopefully never matters for UT. ATM, however? Maybe. I thought he would have been a good hire instead of The Elk, but we'll likely never know that one either.

Sark is great. He has this program in as solid of a place as many of us have ever seen, and better than all of us expected to see again. I would love ten more years of this.

Sark is also a recovered alcoholic, who has had rib splitting heart surgery and may have an eventful personal life. I am just enjoying each day he is here and not counting on anything too far in the future.

One of the insiders on Aggies247 is opining about the DT roles and depth. I say "insider" because they all defer to him as such and he's attended practices and appears to talk to people in the program.

Hicks has beaten out Onyedim to start alongside Regis. That got people wondering if Hicks is suddenly "coming on and playing like a 5 star" and the guy said "no, he plays high and lacks explosiveness but he works hard" and then they realize that, magically, Onyedim didn't blossom after leaving ISU for a final year at ATM. Apparently he's got either conditioning or work ethic issues or both.

They're talking about playing DJ Sanders in a "key role" this season in the interior and Tarp confirmed that while also saying basically "hopefully not early though". Let's be clear here - DJ Sanders is a bad-bodied true freshman with S&C issues and no technique. Texas wanted him as a complete project who wouldn't touch the field for a minimum of 2 seasons. If ATM is playing that guy, they are well and truly fucked on defense.

I know we've discussed this ad nauseum, but they really do not understand what a drop off in their front 3/4 is going to do to the rest of their defense. They're mostly in denial that there will be a drop off after losing 3 early round picks from the front 3/4, for starters. There's almost no analysis, beyond Tarp surreptitiously trying to let folks know, that a weaker front means the LBs are actually going to have make a lot of plays.

Currently, per their discussion, they have a heavy rotation of Regis/Hicks and Onyedim/Evans and then Sanders is going to have to play, along with Landon Rink. I don't think any of those guys make the Texas two deep and Regis/Hicks would be fighting for the third rotation. An SEC LOS League front 3/4 indeed.

Landon Rink sucks, and I'm pretty sure he's already maxed out.

Sark's not leaving Texas for the NFL or anywhere else unless:
a) the NFL makes him some ridiculous offer, like an Andy Reid type salary. And that might not do it if Sark has already won 2 titles at Texas.
b) Sark gets tired of recruiting
c) Something in the college landscape changes and Texas no longer has a high-end NIL system and Texas goes back to being at a competitive disadvantage
d) Some type of morality clause/Chris Beard situation happens

That's it, that's the list.

When we discussed this 3 or so years ago, I don't remember the aTm system coming up at all, particularly since the deal was done with regents within the UT system.

Why is this he being a cagey fuck with guys out for the year. “Lower leg injury.” He’s out for the year, just say what the shit it is…I’m starting to think elko might have a pathological lying problem. “We’ll have double digit draft picks.” It wouldn’t surprise me if we see Myles out there starting on Saturday.

Was living in LA at the time and drove up for the game.  I vaguely remember we would have been like #2 or #3 in the country with a win. I think Tiger Woods gave a pre-game speech to the Stanford players. Pathetic home crowd, was like a high school football game. Horrible loss.

I also went to this game to visit Stanford for grad school and watch the game.  Worked at Enron at the time and they paid for all grad school visits so why the F not.

Atmosphere and game were terrible but I do remember the positives:  tiger and the fact that we were told ahead of time that security doesn’t check anything so we were able to bring in full bottles of liquor into the game and no one cared.

Some news from their end:

-Moss is cleared to play versus UTSA. The size of his workload is TBD.

-I've spoilered Tarp's "10 Things" about the UTSA below. He more or less predicts a blowout while also accidentally highlighting that UTSA's strengths favor ATM's weaknesses. He says "the matchups don't favor UTSA" and then proceeds to explain that they return most of their OL and their leading rusher. He also says that they were good against the running game and return most of their DL but ATM's running game will be a problem due to rebuilding at LB. As we've discussed, while I do not expect a UTSA win, this game is ripe for giving ATM fans a ton to bawl all over in the aftermath.

-The overarching prediction result for the regular season from the 247 posters is that ATM is poised to go 9-3, conceding losses on the road to ND, LSU and sip. I went to Lake Charles with buddies yesterday and we took under the season total of 8.5 for the Texas 8&4 Aggies.

Spoiler

1. Most teams don't play great in season openers due to a combination of issues unless they're playing a significantly outmanned or just incompetent opponent. They usually have to get some nerves out of the way and their in game processes (communications, substitution patterns, adjustments, etc.) have yet to be tested. There's going to be more confusion, hesitation, and miscommunication. Most teams simply get a better sense of themselves when they're playing someone else as opposed to practicing against each other. Given the level of competition, it may not show up in terms of play to play production, but the overall effect will be smoother in operation in the following game than the first one.

2. Texas A&M can talk about execution in the press conferences but they're also going to want to show off that the offense is more balanced and explosive than last season after putting their faith in quarterback Marcel Reed and adding wideouts via the NCAA transfer portal. UTSA had a really good pass rush in 2024, but their secondary was really below average (kind of like the 2023 Aggies) and so this could be a big matchup problem for them versus A&M's experience and talent at the skill positions.

3. However, as I posted on the boards, A&M blew out teams in 2019, 2021, and 2023, scoring 40 to 50 points in those outings, and finished 8-5, 8-5, and 7-6. Conner (Who?) Weigman threw for five scores in the 2023 opener. Whatever happens on Saturday night may not be indicative of things to come for the season as whole.

4. UTSA isn't a bad Group of Five outfit, having gone to a bowl game last year and winning five of their last seven. They're probably much closer to 2024 Bowling Green than 2024 New Mexico State but the matchups aren't in their favor.

5. They didn't play well away from home last season…at all (1-6 in 2024) although they usually played people close. Playing in front of 100,000 fans may be different than playing in front of 20,000, however.

6. They ran the ball really well last season and bring back leading rusher Robert Henry and most of the offensive line that made it happen. They do most of their damage from B gap to B gap so if you want an idea of what A&M's run defense is going to look like, we're probably going to find out to an extent.

7. Quarterback Owen McCown doesn't have a big arm, but he can both throw for over 300 yards and turn it over multiple times in a game. He suffered from a drop rate of about 10% last season per Pro Football Focus.

8. Their defense was really good versus the run for the most part (just over 100 yards a game which led the American Athletic Conference) because they've got enough size and depth to be competitive versus G5 opposition. However, they're rebuilding at backer with former A&M signee Shad Banks (TCU transfer) and also safety. Thus, their problems may not be at the first level as much as they are the second and third levels (angles and filling on the move).

9. Their pass rush may have departed in the former of leading sacker Jimmori Robinson who took his 10.5 sacks to West Virginia. They had a lot of turnover at corner as well.

10. Overall, this game has the potential to get out of hand if UTSA can't run the ball, McCown turns it over, and a rebuilt back seven and pass rush lacks sufficient experience and moxie to handle not just their first game of the season but one at Kyle Field. However, if UTSA settles down and A&M has some first game jitters, it might take a while to dispose of the Roadrunners but provide some solid lessons as to what needs to be tweaked with Notre Dame looming on the horizon.

That is the upside of a team whose coach gets about 8 wins every year and is, at some point, in contention for a SEC championship, they have longevity. Add to it, aggie can't afford anyone else, and The Elk is there to stay.

The extra conference game plus requiring a P4 opponent is going to cut into Texas A&M almost having a floor of 8 wins every season.

They lived on mostly 4 nonconference patsies at home plus getting an awful until last year South Carolina as their permanent rival.  South Carolina, excluding FCS games, was 71-69 from 2012 to 2023. They bragged about being in the mighty SEC.  But if you look at Sagarin SOS, they had weaker schedules than Texas basically every year since they left the Big 12 except 2.

So take the 4 buy wins nonconference and go 4-4 in the SEC to brag about going 8-4 in the mighty SEC.  They very rarely ever beat any good SEC teams.  Arkansas really let us down by losing almost every game against them in Dallas.  Often times in very close games.

If they win 8 games going forward, that is a lot better than the 8 wins they were getting before Texas joined the conference.

That implies their P4 opponent won’t just be Stanford, BC, Minnesota, Cal, etc. I don’t think they’ll schedule the Ohio State, Michigan, ND type schools like us.

Here is the aggie P4 team OOC recruiting list. Unfortunately for them, 2 of them are SEC.

Top 5 worst P4 teams

Good news for aggie. Wake Forest, Northwestern, Purdue, Arizona, Cincinnati, West Virginia, and Michigan State are all on the table. I'm gonna be kind and not mention UCLA for... ya know.. reasons.

At least that guy is credited for convincing the money that the program was lagging way behind in things like facilities, and got that ball rolling here. Not sure sumlin even has that.  I doubt Arizona has a good thing to say about either of them.

Jerome Myles stayed a 5-Star throughout the last recruiting cycle despite tearing his ACL in his 3rd game of his senior year.  Now he's suffered another lower leg injury that will cause him to miss this whole season.  2 season ending injuries before taking his first collegiate snap does not bode well for him.  Another 5-star bust for A&M coming up.

We're witnessing a moment in time in which our two biggest rivals are both signing and then failing, over and over again, with numerous 5 stars and high 4 stars. It's wonderful to witness, but it is also really interesting to me. Why so? Because they look like they're failing in very different ways.

OU - These guys are landing 5 stars/high 4 stars that other big time programs are also recruiting. The Adebawore guy was wanted by everyone. Jackson Arnold had a bunch of big name programs after him. The Tatum guy had many schools after him as well (yes, he's a bust. busting in real time.) Is Peyton Bowen going to live up to his billing? Maybe, but he's got a ways to go. He was pursued by Oregon and ND until the end. The 5 star TE who just transferred after the spring was on the radar for many teams. David Stone was hotly pursued by many of the usual suspects.

ATM - These guys have been landing highly ranked guys that a lot of other programs are avoiding. Myles had the choice of ATM or Utah in the end. USC pulled their NIL portion of their offer. The Georgia guys currently committed weren't pursued by Georgia and other neighboring powers, for the most part. Multiple guys from the 2022 were labeled as mercenaries at the time and had offers pulled from the likes of Bama and Georgia or they were never offered in the first place. Walter Nolan and Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy were both guys that were considered transfer certainties during their recruitments. Reuben Owens hit them up for money after taking money from Louisville and his gangster dad has tried to rework his deal several times since then.

So with OU, my view is that they have a legitimate developmental problem going on right now, likely in the S&C area under Schmidt and on the field with the coaching staff. It shouldn't be surprising since most of the OU staff and the S&C team are pure ass. Bedenbaugh, Bates, and Venables have good reps, but counter that with Jones, Finley, Murray, Schmidt, the LB coach failure from Clemson, and Valai and it all starts to make sense. If you are a 5 star and you go to play for Venables, you're not doing so due to NFL aspirations. He's not getting guys better while there.

With ATM, I think they have an evaluation problem. They're flat out ignoring character red flags because Jimbo and The Elk are starfuckers. The influencers around The Elk are starfuckers, both Liucci's crew and the big money. They're ignoring physical red flags. Someone said that Myles' wasn't going to pass the physical at USC, or that USC believed that, in recruiting circles. ATM didn't give one shit about that. They've ignored tweener status in multiple recruitments.

I'm hoping neither regime figures any of this out.
