Texas is on the cusp of greatness, but needs to break through. It's clear that PK and his defense has been solid the last two years, but the offense, led by Sark, is the weak link that's been failing. Ryan Day got Chip Kelly and Mack parted ways with his DC buddy to help them break through. Who will help Sark get there? It won't be Milwee; he's learned most of what he knows from Sark.

In Atlanta, Sarkisian struggled to match Kyle Shanahan's success, and his red-zone issues ultimately led to his firing. Yet to win a championship Sark will need to be successful versus  NFL-level talent and speed. Sark is the mastermind, but Milwee is probably the mechanics specialist. Have quarterbacks improved under Milwee's tutelage? Quinn's mechanics were always in question, and now it's Arch's turn. Sark has shown he can hire quality assistants, so he should hire a quarterback coach with a strong reputation for improving mechanics with a big enough ego and credibility ( a la Patterson) to challenge Sark's ideas, rather than simply following Sark's direction. This could help Sark get past whatever it is that has held him back when he has not had a Carrol or Saban challenging him to do better.

Are there any candidates like that out there?

I have some concerns around Milwee as well, but I think the proof will be in how Arch bounces back from this first loss. What I was most alarmed by is how Arch's mechanics broke down in some pretty uncharacteristic ways under pressure. Firing the ball too hard and high was a fairly consistent trend. There were a few where the pocket was collapsing that I can give a pass on, but tons of easy misses. The weird sidearm motion out of nowhere was hopefully not a product of running the Quinntastic quick screens the last couple of years in practice.

Milwee is ass, my dude. I realize he has a long relationship with Arch but we need to find someone who can develop QBs and is smart enough to provide input into the offensive gameplan. Then hopefully, Sark trusts that person enough to let him be the playcaller. Get someone young and innovative.

Arch has his own personal QB trainer, David Morris.

Does Arch work with the trainer during the season or in the offseason? The internet tells me this trainer is based in Alabama. If that's true, I don't imagine the trainer coming to Austin to train Arch, so he probably gets his QB coaching from our very own Milwee.

I'm not sure. But Arch has been working David Morris since he was in 4th grade. Quinn had his own QB trainer as well.

Part of the understandable frustration is do we even know what Milwee's actual responsibilities are at Texas? He's kind of an enigma, outside of Sark clearly wanting him here. I think titles are kind of meaningless. Is he actually a QB developer or does he assist more with game plans and play calling? He was OC for 5 years at Akron at a very young age.

Arch has multiple coaches he works with over Zoom on mental stuff/film breakdown. Very good chance he doesnt come to Texas without Milwee but who actually knows. I was shocked at how bad he looked mechanically. Some members of his inside circle have been hinting the guy is ready to go on all levels. Mechanics, recognition, general health/strength, film preparation. All of it. Saturday was like getting coal in your stocking as a kid on Christmas morning. my impression is Milwee isn't going anywhere unless he leaves on his own for another job.

Sort of like Costanza.

We have a HC/playcaller, an OC, and a QB coach but it's not clear what their individual responsibilities are. Whatever they have been doing, it's clear something is not working. Only the HC can fix it.

I think this is part of the issue: there's no one in Sark's ear with experience against elite competition to provide a second opinion in the room or during the game, helping him to outclass elite play callers on the other side.

This thread isn't about making the SEC championship game or the playoffs – it's about taking that final step to break through to a championship. What you're discussing has already been shown to be achievable with the current staff.

It should have happened before this season but every offensive analyst should be working on pulling a breakdown of all the TDs scored from inside the 10 in games between top 10 teams in the past 5 years. Top 5 runs and top 5 passes. There's your new goal line offense.

Guess what play ain't working here??

I wouldn't read too much into Arch's mechanics based on one game - he looked fine last year so this game may have just been nerves. Sark's red zone issues are a different story.

Why is the problem assumed to be Milwee and not Sark?

I contend that Sark's limitations are well-documented, particularly his red-zone struggles since Atlanta. However, Milwee isn't the solution, as he lacks the independent experience against elite competition needed to help Sark overcome his challenges. Sark requires someone with the right experience and a bold, aggressive voice to help him outclass elite play callers on the other side. That said, I do think Milwee might be the issue when it comes to mechanics, given he likely spends more time with the QBs given Sark's other responsibilities.

That pisses me the fuck off.

Our Qb s family runs a passing academy and he’s been around NFL level QB instruction his whole life, and you think we need a throwing mechanics guy?  For fucks sake.  He spazzed out on the big stage and had a bad game.  What he needs is more game reps against good teams.

Yeah, we all sit here and wonder what Milwee actually does, because I sure as shit can't see it. I'll give Ryan Day credit for actually going and getting an OC to win a title. It at least shows he's somewhat self-aware that he can't be a HC and call plays when he knows it time to put up or shut up. I don't care about the Michigan losses, he fucking won a title. We need an OC and a new QB coach, because what we all witnessed ain't it, fam.

Someone already noted we aren't just talking about making the SEC game or playoffs, we're talking about winning the SEC championship and a national championship. There has been, so far, a consistent issue in 5 games now, against equal level talent teams in the RZ. Washington, Georgia 1 and 2, OSU 1 and 2 with 2 different QBs that were 5 stars and 1 of which was drafted to the NFL. It was also seen against lower level teams on occasion, like aggie so it isn't limited data against only top teams. The QBs were not the only offensive talent drafted and it was accompanied by some of the best defenses Texas has had in it's history.

Further, this RZ issue and Sarks unwillingness to take what the defense will give him has been commented on at multiple stages by multiple media sources.

To continue not to recognize it as an issue is either willful ignorance or lack of understanding fundamental aspects of offensive game planning.

How many more examples do you need to acknowledge an issue? Acknowledging an issue is not the same as panic. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Refusing to look at mutliple data points that reconfirm an issue over and over again is a choice. People do it all the time because they, for whatever reason, don't want to acknowledge the reality of a situation. The internet and social media is largely comprised of simple platitudes about complex issues and dismissive responses to those who choose to discuss them and possible solutions. This occurs as it allows for their false narrative to remain true in their own minds.

The retort will be don’t you remember what it was like with Strong/Herman? JUST BE THANKFUL!

This should be a make or break year for Milwee. If Sark is really listening to him and cares as much as he says about getting a title. Milwee should be the first guy pushing on Sark to change up the calls and not be so predictable with route concepts.

I think Arch will be fine, he didnt look anything like that on his snaps last season. Dude was just too hyped then once he started with that bad pass to start the game he snowballed into collapse.

We need our quarterback that grew up in a family of quarterbacks to be around more quarterback coaches that have had successful quarterbacks.

We've all seen kids be pretty good in certain areas coming out of high school, only to struggle later. Barnes players with free throws, Manny with tackling, Vance with CBs adjusting to the ball in the air. I'm sure you've noticed similar cases where kids regress after working with specific coaches day in and day out here at the 40. Sometimes it almost seems predictable based on the coach.

Totally wishcasting here, but if DeBoer gets shit-canned at gumps, I hope we reach out to him to be our playcaller/QB coach. He turned Penix into a stud and also went 2-0 against Sark over the past few years. He could work with Arch, maybe help Sark with his redzone offense, and would overall be a massive upgrade over Milwee.

He's not going to be a QB coach.

Not buying thus. Manning has some pretty good resources for mechanics as well as a private coach.
