Talarico is very very close to the ideal Texas Democratic Senate candidate:

White male.

Super duper duper Christian and knows how to articulate that to people across the spectrum.

Speaks Spanish.

Background in education and is able to seem authentic and come across as a true public servant rather than a super-ambitious power hungry egomaniac (which was what I thought killed Beto).

Legislative experience.

Understands that the way for Democrats to message is to constantly reframe almost every issue as a class (rich vs poor) issue instead of whatever bullshit the MAGA side is spouting.

The one thing he’s missing is being pro gun.  I haven’t seen much from him on the topic.  But he needs to learn how to shoot and if/when he wins the primary he needs to release an ad showing him frying bacon on an AK47 that he just emptied the clip on.  Texans are fucking morons and won’t vote for somebody they think will take their guns.  And if there’s an attack on Talarico, it’s that he’s too soft of a personality.  Undoubtedly the attack ads will say stupid shit like “Talarico wants to take your guns and let illegal immigrants walk through your yard…”

He probably doesn’t have a chance.  He will have a better shot against Paxton than Cornyn.  But I do think he’s a better candidate than Beto was.

I'm still not convinced he wins his primary.  He's the Christian version of Elizabeth Warren, which probably explains his support in these parts.

I’m not convinced he wins the primary either.  But if the Dems choose a black man who just lost a senate race last cycle against a lesser opponent or a proven loser in Beto, they deserve the shellacking they will end up getting.  Talarico probably doesn’t have much of a chance of winning the general, but he’s got a shitload better shot than Beto or Allred.

Curious if you folks want an AMA with Talarico.  He said he'd be up for it.   Still want to bring Kendall in too, but we can't have them on the same night, for fear someone might sense Kendall is endorsing Talarico.

I don't dip my toes in here too much but I'm curious what the Surly CR thinks about this guy. My first exposure to him was his appearance on Rogan and I'm not sure I finished the pod but I was intrigued by the niche space that he is attempting to occupy.

I saw an ad earlier today about him asking for donations and was tempted to drop a few simoleons.

I've used "moderate" to describe myself in the past but I don't think I like that label because it kind of implies I don't give a shit. I have serious issues with both parties and the system as a whole but this dude piques my interest and is someone I would vote for (I vote dem all the time in case anyone was wondering - just not a straight ticket guy).

Like all of you I'm frustrated with the state this country is in right now - and while I don't agree with and have a problem with a lot of the rhetoric on this board I also want the best for the people in this country.

Guys like this that attempt to occupy middle ground without conceding integrity or ethics could be very valuable for the democratic party.

Moderates are the reason we are where we are. The attempts to appease centrists only serve to make progressives apathetic and not turn out and vote. We are here because the DNC hasn't stood for anything, and as long as they keep rolling with moderates we will keep losing.

Let me run you back through the democratic time machine for a bit. The D's spent the back half of the 60's righting a lot of wrongs. Back then the R's are what the D's currently are now. They spent their time droning on about policies, and the populace was tuning them out. Their attempts at reversing New Deal Era policies weren't popular. So they tied them to identity politics to get people to ignore the policies that were against their own interest, and instead vote for keeping minorities and women under thumb. From 1968 til now they've won 9 of the last 15 Presidential terms. The problem is that people do not want two right wing parties, and the DNC has been Republican lite. So as long as they are roughly the same true progressives and people that wanna see real change will keep staying home.

There is a reason why I posted in this thread vs. all the others in CR.

We all like Jimmy a lot but have differing outlooks on his chances. Seeing you on here gives me hope he’s connecting with a new cohort of independent voters. We’re still over a year away but I think his campaign is off to a great start. I think he’ll win the primary. The base will get on their phones and door knock their neighborhoods for him next year.

The post up thread about his framing of the issues as The 1% versus the rest of us was spot on. I think that will speak volumes next year when the economy is in the shitter. He has a winning message.

I kinda gave my thoughts a few posts up (I think he’s a pretty great candidate relatively speaking, but I’m not all that optimistic about his chances of winning), but I will add that I have met him and he came off really well.  I also know someone who is close to him (not through politics or church) and they say he is the real deal in terms of character and selflessness.  He is only the 2nd politician I have ever donated money to.  If he wins the primary I may even volunteer for his campaign which seems crazy to me since less than 10 years ago I considered myself completely uninterested in politics.  But just from everything I’ve seen and heard, regardless of how his policy ideas align with my ideology, he’s the kind of person we desperately need in national politics right now.

I am trying to come in here and have an earnest discussion about current politics and a specific candidate for office and your response is to waste a bunch of your own time digging up shit from the 2024 election when the DNC thought that Kamala Harris was a good candidate for president. Who I fucking hated. For good reason. She's a total dipshit.

And then people like you wonder why the Dems lose all the fucking time. It's because people - like you - are a bunch of insufferable, self-righteous pricks that act like people like me don't have legitimate political opinions about the future of this country and don't posses critical thinking skills.

Props to @Snake Diggity and @berlinerbaer who are willing to engage in actual discussion and answer my questions.

BTW - between this comment and my last one I saw another Talarico ad and threw his campaign $10 despite me being between jobs and down to my dick and balls.

Because I try and still believe in shit and still love this country.

And then you wrap it up with this. Look, I applaud you for opening your mind and getting interested in a guy like Talarico. We’re going to need voters like you if we want to keep a criminal like Paxton out of the senate, but don’t act surprised when you catch some strays. The country is in a perilous time. The president, just today, addressed a room of our military’s top brass and said that they would be sent to American cities to fight “the enemy within.” That’s some seriously scary shit. I don’t care how much you hate Harris, I can’t imagine how anyone would ever think she call the people who don’t support her “the enemy within” and call for the US military to go into our cities to fight those that don’t support her.

I didn't "jump" to anything. I was attempting to have a conversation about a polticial candidate within the state of Texas. Someone quickly made it about 2024 and dug up some comments that I had made that I may not - and probably don't - still agree with.

If your thoughts about Trump now differ from those a year ago, you are either grossly misinformed or an abject moron.  We know you're not the latter.

That you are only aware of Talarico, a state rep here in your own state, from Rogan, is pretty shameful.

Most people around here really like Talarico because he seems to exemplify what a real Christian in politics should be like.  And, in that sense, is about the polar opposite of everything that is Trump.

Most of us also are pretty fearful that a good guy like Talarico can't possibly win a general election in this state.

Also curious that you discern that Kamala Harris is a total idiot, but somehow don't discern that Donald Trump is a total idiot, with dementia, a mean streak, and a severe personality order that is incompatible with the office of POTUS.  And also backed by some pretty dangerous people.

And either didn't vote or voted in a way that would help Trump win.

I really am a big tent guy and I'll take anyone who will vote against GOP. I personally think the progressives are the folks who are fucking things up, but I think part of it is a definitional problem.  I think "progressive" is a bit of a broken definition.  If I am in an anti-progressive mood, the definition has too much identity politics and defund the police woven in.  If I am in a pro-progressive mood, it's about a color blind radically progressive tax system and universal health care.

Talarico is 100% a better candidate for most Texans than anybody in the race from the Republican side. By a fucking mile.

If you can't -- or won't -- see that based on what is playing out in front of your eyes, ain't nothing here likely to convince you. Voting Republican in ANY race helps Trump/MAGA keep majorities in ALL facets of government. It's only been eight months and look at the damage he's caused -- and continues to cause on a near daily basis. But Kamala was a terrible candidate. Boo-fucking-hoo. Worst case scenario with Kamala is that we fiddle-fart around for four years with ADULTS doing the really important shit and we pick somebody else in 2028. Worst-case scenario with Trump is a complete immolation of the Constitution and the Trump Monarchy has begun. Mike Judge's vision of future America becomes reality. But, hey, Kamala was an "idiot."

You've got to look at the bigger picture here. This country is in a struggle for her life. The answer is staring you right in the face. Get rid of the scourge that is MAGA and then (only then) can we get back to the typical Dem-Rep squabbling that is 'normal.'

I appreciate you coming here seeking honest discourse. I think a lot of the antagonism you're receiving is based on your dismissal of Harris based on nebulous vibes and feelings. Is there something about her policy or platform you disagreed with? is there something that appeals to you about the Trump/GOP platform?

TBH, a lot of the hate towards the Dems on a national level are based on untruths, intentional misinterpretations, and stereotypes. I've mentioned this on other threads, but take a look at the legislation passed every year in California - worker protections, improving access to healthcare for all, union protections, protecting LGTBQ, sensible gun legislation, women's reproductive freedom, etc. Take a look at Harris's platform in 2024. Compare that to what's happening in Texas, other GOP states, and Project 2025 (which at this point is obviously being implemented.) But if you take a passing look at the national media, you'd think that all they do out there is make Furries the official state animal, and give "illegals" checks every month. When you compare the two, which one is more appealing to you?

We need to stop voting or siding with parties/candidates based on vibes and gut feelings. Read and compare the legislation put forward by candidates. Study their policy positions. It doesn't take that much time. When you see GOP politicians whose platforms solely involve things like "making America more free, protecting our God given rights, and fighting for the constitution, ask yourself why they are unable to articulate any tangible policy. The answer is simple - their policies are unpopular with the majority of Americans. That's not an opinion - polling overwhelmingly supports this. So they deal in platitudes and feel-good slogans that, in a vacuum, are difficult to criticize.

If one is a voting for the GOP these days, it really only makes sense if you fall into one of the below categories: 1) Top .01% and/or 2) believe America was a better place when their was both intentional or de facto discrimination against Blacks, women, and immigrants.

And that's not even considering the current administration who just yesterday declared that Americans in the largest cities are the "enemy from within" and that they will be gleefully sending American troops into those cities to teach them a lesson. You should be able to see why when someone stands in the middle while this is happening, they are, at best, mocked, and more typically, reviled.
