Thats not what I fucking said. You’re obviously fucking stupid if your takeaway from my comment is that Herman is better than Sark which is ridiculous and insulting to everything Sark has done here.

Herman was a gigantic pussyass shitbag borderline psycho, but he won us 10 games at least once in 2018. My point is that people act like Sark rescued us from a decade of Charlie Strong play and completely gloss over a ten win season by Herman before Herman dropped the ball in 2019 and 2020.

I’m glad Herman is gone but don’t act like we were some 5-7 team that Sark completely rescued from the shitter. The 3 games we lost in 2020 were all by a margin of 13 points. If Keontay Ingram doesn’t fumble at the TCU 1 yard line, we win that game instead of losing by 2. If Sam doesn’t throw another game ending pick in 4OT in the OU game, we could have tied it up and gone to 5OT. If Dicker makes the final kick against Iowa State, we go to OT instead of losing by 3. All the pieces fell into place perfectly for Herman to be canned that year because he was such an unlikeable prick, but the team wasn’t as bad as you’d like to think. I’m glad Herman got fired so we could get Sark, but let’s pump the brakes on Sark being a savior when the NIL factor is also in play here.

Kind of you to leave out Ingram dropping a wide open well schemed td pass opening drive vs LSU

Glad Herm is gone but he was 7-3 his last year with a bowl win.  He just happened to be an asshole

Not to mention, this is the kind of thing y'all will rightfully bash Fat Ketch for. So stupid

a. People post things all the time for whatever reason. A board that posts about Chicken fried steak, Gouda, and curtains isn’t very selective about what gets posted, so not sure why someone would whine about this.

Idk that you do... I think a lot of credit goes to having insane players that didn't transfer, that transferred in or that signed during that period.

There's a lot of structural AD stuff that has gone into place to support the program in the long term as well. There's also a lot of budget and support staff that have been added.

Sark has been achieving what's expected the last 2 seasons with every resource available to him in a new era of NIL where that was 80%+ of the game.

With revshare there is going to be a lot more parity, we are already seeing it play out in real time. Franklin being fired after being so close to playing for a national championship isn't indicative of Penn State being aggressive, It's indicative of results based on the investment in these teams compared to other teams. Its not that he's losing games, its that by losing games he's flushing 20M+ down the toilet on top of his salary.

Same with LSU - they are one of the more aggressive NIL participants in an "anything goes please pay our guys" type of way. When Brian Kelly shits down his leg and isn't fielding a competitive team that costs twice his annual salary they aren't gonna let him keep dropping the ball.

This also brings up a key point about the new NIL era and conference revenue sharing.  The main advantage of coaching at these "top" programs like FL, LSU, and PSU are their advantages in facilities, recruiting, post-season opportunities, and exposure.  These also come with an obvious cost of performance expectations.

In the previous era a school like Indiana would never be able to hold onto a top coach.  Now they're getting tens of millions from the conference, can pay their own players, yet come with more realistic expectations about winning games.  Not that they'd be happy losing games, but with the playoff opportunities and NIL funds, they can offer a coach everything they need to win without the immense pressure.  We saw this with Gary Patterson and I think we're going to see more and more of it.

It’s possible he’s a specific kind of alcoholic. One of my grandfathers could have a beer with anyone but that’d be about it. Almost. About every 2-3 years something would trigger him and he’d disappear for a 6-20 day bender that involved who the hell knows what. I was 6 when he died, so I’ve only heard the stories. They’re pretty wild. My grandmother would act like nothing happened.

The Sarkisian stories kind of remind of these.

That occurred to me too.  Something in the nature of a "functional alcoholic."  However, that is belied by his history at UW and USC of uncontrolled public drinking.

The very nature of alcoholism is that it doesn't get "better," or "more controlled."  It inevitably gets worse.

Sure, a guy that makes a public fool of himself, as did Sark, could withdraw into the bottle and avoid such public displays in the future.  But that requires actually withdrawing from society, which Sark has not done.

But Sark has shown a past tendency to drink at the worst possible times and once that "tendency" is exposed, if the drinking continues, the public displays will, also.

So, it seems to me unlikely that Sark is going "AWOL" to drink.  It would inevitably evidence itself in other ways.  What's more likely is that he has to take some time off to handle shit with Loreal, or whatever, and to avoid drinking in the first place.

Given his history, I would be surprised if CDC would tolerate really completely AWOL, that is unexplained and unexcused absence.  That's also contrary to the recovery mindset of honesty and admission that trust has been betrayed.

I would believe, however, that his absences were explained to a select few who kept a pretty tight lid on it in the belief that offering explanations violates his privacy and invites more controversy.

The fucking massive contractual buyout, the embarrassment of having to can him for what he was already canned for in the past and the questions of “you knew what he was when you hired him, why did you hire him?”, the comparisons to the previous HC and his cocaine fueled orgies that were partially responsible for his firing, his success the last two seasons, putting players in the pros, his success recruiting

There are probably hundreds more reasons…

I would disagree with this, at least with regard to the last two hiring cycles. For Chuckles we can blame the previous administration, including Steve Fucking Patterson who I knew personally long before he came to Texas, and who is a grade A asshole. Anyway, let's look at the two most recent hiring processes.

2016-2017 College football carousel

Tom Herman was the hot name after the 2016 football season and Texas rapidly identified him as the man and moved swiftly to make the hire. (It was graded an A by CBS Sports at the time, just to give you a sense of how it was regarded). If you look at who else was available, the pickings were pretty slim. Matt Rhule would arguably have been a better hire, but his only experience at the time was three years as HC of Temple. The only other guy of the coaches hired that you that you go, oooh I'd like to have him is Lane Kiffin, who was hired by Florida Atlantic. At the time Kiffin was something of a joke, having been run out of USC and spending three years in Saban rehab. Bottom line: In retrospect Herman was not great, but at the time he was seen as a home-run hire and Texas' process allowed the team to quickly secure him after he went 22-4 at UH.

2020-2021 College football carousel

If you go back and look at the names hired that cycle there are a lot of people who you say meh to, including Bryan Harsin (Auburn) and Bret Bielema (Illinois). Texas was by far the highest profile job that came open that year and the team had its pick. Among the alternatives, the only other names that make any sense in hindsight are Jedd Fisch (NE Patriots QB coach hired by Arizona) or Josh Heupel (hired by Tennessee from UCF). Texas would have lost its collective fucking mind if Heupel was hired. Again, given the choices at the time, it is difficult to argue against the choice of Sarkisian. In October of last year, grading in hindsight, CBS rated him the best hire of the cycle.

So yes, by all means, spread all sorts of libel about Sarkisian, his wife, former UT players, and babies. Talk about all of his (alleged) drinking. But even in hindsight I would argue it is difficult to say that Texas hiring process is "fucked up."

I do NOT agree with your Sarkisian hiring assessment at all.

Dude was a failure in multiple ways at previous Head Coaching stops.  He was in no way choice #1 at the time. Texas took a big swing at Urban Meyer and struck out. Then we were left scrambling trying to find a candidate and “traded one addict for another”.

Well, I don't think that has any impact on his alcoholism or recovery.  Either he can stay sober doing a job like this or he can't.  Whether it's UW, USC, UT or Austin Peay.

I do think he's rather taken for granted the talent he had at Alabama and is learning, the hard way, that merely good recruiting is not good enough and it needs to be backed up with evaluation, reevaluation, and constant improvement in all facets if he wants to run the kind of offense he likes with the level of execution that he expects.

Neither are ideal. However this season and last years playoffs proved that Sark is not the guru he and the media claim, the garbage calls against OSU and Georgia prove it. This season is a dumpster fire on offense. Don't want Herman back ever but don't want Sarks garbage game time calls either.

Florida's defense couldn't keep their energy high on the road after giving up those big plays.

It was 17-21 when Reed though an interception in the 4th quarter....

Then the next drive sun belt billy went for it on 4th and 6 on the 50 yard line like a fucking rube.

Herman was a good firing, Ehlinger being pushed out was a stupid fuckup and sark set himself back substantially by not begging him to stay.

Herman would have had success at some level in the big xii over the same time period as Sark, maybe match or exceed it over the same period. (One big xii champ and overall win count)

Sark and the current AD had very little to do with 2021 NIL, the AD came around and has a lot to do with how it evolved into a sustainable monster.

Sark isn't some dynasty builder coach. He has good runs with good players and gets in his own way a lot and has a massive ego. It's what it is. There's a certain level of detachment that comes with success and I think he exhibits all the bad qualities of that with not enough of the good output for people to brush it off.

Bingo

It's simple, Herman's offensive style was QB hero ball. Worked for him in Ohio State because he had great backup QBs after breaking the first two. Worked in Houston with Greg Ward Jr. Worked o.k. at Texas with Sam, although he would break down every season and have to play hurt.

On defense Herman's offensive style was Todd Orlando. Suckass.

Sark on the other hand is very protective of the QB, running a pro style offense with a lot of window dressing to confuse defenses. On defense leaving it to PK has seemed to work great, we have badass players too.

Sark said in a press conference though that once he landed Quinn, other badass recruits came here. Same with Arch. The QB believes in the system that will prepare them for the NFL and the NFL talent follows.

Herman would be still running QB sweep on 3rd and 4th downs with a hobbled QB and defense giving up 50 points a game.

Reading these comments has me feeling like I took crazy pills. The team was spiraling and headed for the dumpster as soon as Ehlinger graduated. And not because Sam was some amazing QB but because he provided actual leadership and stability. Herman had some positive qualities as a coach and playcaller, but I swear y'all must have fucking amnesia to think Sark isn't a massive improvement over Herman.

This is another Herman vs. Sark thing - and I'm genuinely curious to get your opinion - do you think Herman could have managed all the seismic changes that happened to CFB in 2021? That he could have handled NIL and the transfer portal exploding? Because I personally think he would have fucked that up something fierce. Sark, for all his problems, was at least able to accept the help and resources offered to him and use them effectively. To be clear, I'm not giving Sark credit for putting together NIL at Texas or anything like that at all. But I'm saying he took the gift that was offered and profited from it. I have very little faith that Herman would have done anything with it at all.

Two tell tale signs that said Herman had to go:

Losing the brocks on recruiting

How many QBs would Herman need to get though a season in the SEC? 6? 7?

Loved Sam but he couldn’t run what sark runs imo.  Sam won tom a lot of games. Also lost a few single-handedly

did you watch the game?

Florida sliced through them at collie station the first drive

Then aggy threw a bomb and completed it and took the momentum, but it was 14-14 at the end of the first quarter.

Florida's defense couldn't keep their energy high on the road after giving up those big plays.

It was 17-21 when Reed though an interception in the 4th quarter....

Then the next drive sun belt billy went for it on 4th and 6 on the 50 yard line like a fucking rube.

I watch most of their games that dont coincide with our times. They will drop 2 before the playoffs. They string together a few low percentage plays on offense that would kill a game if they don't connect. Also the defense is suspect enough to drop 30+ on by a competent offense

Pretty surreal reading about the one subject about Sark that we hoped never came up in thread discussions at any point at his time at Texas. If that really became an issue again, it will absolutely come out at some point. Knowing from my own personal experiences, going back down that path leads to other destructive behavior that is impossible to keep quiet. I hope that is not what is going on here.

Sam wouldn't have gone 5-7 and was a monster recruiter and face of the program as QB1. It would have built a substantial amount of continuity in getting to QE first year.

What's more likely is that he has to take some time off to handle shit with Loreal, or whatever, and to avoid drinking in the first place.

I had this thought as well. I could see needing some kind of retreat in the scenario that has been described here.
