  2. I know we're always talking about "Texas needs to win" in order to get better footing on the recruiting landscape these days, but to put it into sharp relief, here's what I was thinking about today. Which one of these can Texas's current staff answer affirmatively on to a recruit: 1) We put players regularly into the 1st round of the NFL. 2) We make the playoffs ever. 3) We win national titles here. 4) We win conference titles here. Now think about every other program that Texas is recruiting against for the elite players. Bama, Clemson, LSU - those 3 teams can lay a claim to credibly stating all 4 of those talking points. Ohio State's current regime can credibly claim 1, 2, and 4, and arguably talk about 3 with credibility. Notre Dame and Oklahoma can easily lay claims to 1 and 2, and OU can claim 4 while ND can just offer up the "we're Notre Dame" defense, which speaks to the brand power in the vein of 4. Who else is Texas banging heads with on the recruiting front? Oregon, North Carolina, Texas ATM, and Georgia. Maybe a little bit of Michigan and Florida mixed in. Oregon, ATM and Georgia cheat aggressively and they all put guys in the draft. Oregon played for a national title in the playoff era. Georgia regularly puts guys high in the draft, same for Florida. Anyway, Texas needs a big year and arguably several in order to take away some of the objections they're facing right now on those 4 fronts. They also need to collect some style points on both sides of the ball while winning, because some of those other programs sure as shit are. Win 10 games this year and win the conference title and compete to make the playoffs in 2022, and suddenly you're worrying about Bama, Clemson, OU, and Notre Dame with better credible arguments. Meanwhile, Georgia hasn't won a national title in 40 years and counting. ATM in 82 years and counting. If Michigan can't win with Harbaugh, they ain't winning it all. Mack Brown will be dead, retired, or both by the time the 2023 class signs. Mullen isn't smuggling a national title trophy in his hunchback and will continue to be a paper tiger. LSU is a dumpster fire. Oregon has never won a national title and they're coached by a meatheaded imbecile who will continue to almost willfully lose games he shouldn't. Sarkisian needs to narrow the field of competition and let nature take its course on Saban and Kelly by letting them die violently on the sidelines during old man fits of rage; figure out how to beat Riley regularly; and wait for the authorities to get wise to Ryan Day's pedophilia proclivities.

  4. NIL is playing a role already with recruiting, as we expected. Saban straight up made up the shit about Young today. He has no fucking clue what that player stands to make, largely because no one does, and he damned sure hasn’t seen evidence of material deals for the player. People at Bama literally laughed today hearing that shit. But, hey, he’s Nick Saban and he can do what he wants. As to others, Jamison needs to make some fucking money this fall, because Harris is watching. The math for Evan Stewart has changed. Guys like Worthy need to see legit value or they’ll go somewhere in which they can get it. Meanwhile, Del Conte is a damned road block trying to protect a fiefdom via compliance fiat. He’s about to lose on that front, albeit not probably in public. I still have it this way: Texas gets: -Campbell -Anderson (he’s waiting to see something, I guess, or he’d have already gone public. I’m sticking with Texas and for good reason. -Harris (because his mother ultimately wants him close, not because he picks Texas over Bama) -Patton -Brown I guess I’ll call the rest a continued crapshoot and everything ahead of the program for this class is going to be driven by the fall performance. People coming back with the trope that “winning this year won’t matter for this class” aren’t paying attention to the here and now and the dynamics of the past 18 months for both the world and UT football.

  8. Anytime the hospitalization rate in an area is projected to exceed capacity due to the spread of viruses, that area should institute a mask mandate. Wearing masks indoors in public areas is a proven low/no cost effective way to reduce the spread of viruses. If you think wearing a mask indoors in public areas is a burden, you are a fucking pussy. If you think masks don’t help prevent the spread of viruses like the one that causes COVID, then you are a fucking dumbass.

  10. I always love to see Austin people comment on “strip malls” and the like in Houston when so many of the cool spots in Austin have been bulldozed and turned Into shopping centers. The Backyard? Gone. South Park Meadows? Shopping center. What place has more “soul” than the Domain or the Hill Country Galleria…pure “soul” there. The downtown that used to exist is now a cosmopolitan Mecca and will only get worse. But y’all keep bemoaning the lack of soul in other cities.

  12. It’s by Duff Moses and was originally published in 2018 but it got circulated again after the El Paso shootings in 2019. It’s prescient and shows what we could all see was coming on 1/6/21. I was at a Trump supporting friend’s place for Thanksgiving in 2017 and told him that if Trump lost the 2020 election then he wouldn’t go quietly. I also commented about how Trump lies constantly and he replied, “No he doesn’t.” But he was pretty drunk by that point and when I reminded him of that conversation after Trump lost he said he didn’t remember it. I texted him during the insurrection and he wasn’t bothered by it. We don’t talk anymore.

  18. You know, I do not feel a little bit sorry for her. A somewhat heated vax debate broke out on our $9.95 site, and usually that shit gets shut down, but there was enough intelligent talk that the mods let it go. This guy pretty much summed up my thinking, albeit in a much more eloquent way than I could.

  19. Found out yesterday that my neighbors who have been adamant about not getting vaxxed finally got it. I’ve been urging them for months, but they just wouldn’t budge. Extremely smart couple. They openly admitted that they were piggybacking on the rest of us, and since numbers had been consistently declining, they weren’t going to bother with it. Guess this new wave finally convinced them otherwise, but I’m going to give myself a small bit of credit. Either way, hopefully there are a lot of folks like them who weren’t necessarily anti-vaxxers, but rather just mistakenly believed that the pandemic was over

  30. Last week, I was teaching little bro (who turned 13 yesterday) how to play holdem with a few of my buddies at a house we rented on the Guadalupe... Lil Bro: "I'm going to win." Buddy1: "Do you even know how to play poker?" Lol Bro: "Nope. Doesnt matter. When I want something or I'm going to do something, I say it and it happens. It shows up. That's how it works at our house." Buddy2: "I need to spend more time at your house." Night proceeds, Lil Bro starts getting hands blind, taking people out (took me out) and ends up with the largest chip stack when everyone decides to call it quits. "I told y'all. That's how it works." The next day he said he was going to be wealthy, so he'd buy me any car I want... and a beach. I believe.

  31. Something that gets frequently missed in the embargo debates is that Cuba's economy is still and old-school, planned command economy in which virtually every enterprise of significance is owned by the state. Something like 80 percent of the employed population works in a state-owned company or industry. It's not mixed like China's or even particularly close to China's; the sole concession they made after the collapse of the Soviet Union (and the end of the direct Soviet subsidies that kept their economy somewhat afloat and financed virtually every 'accomplishment' the regime made) was to allow small private businesses in non-key sectors. These are not the companies that will be benefiting from trade liberalization with the United States. So, if you are arguing for the end of the embargo, you are arguing for U.S. companies and people to go into business directly with the Cuban Communist Party and for U.S. wealth to bankroll the continued existence of that regime. And you are hoping that some of those benefits will trickle down to the Cuban people after the state and the party get their cut. There's still some arguments to ending the embargo to be made, but I think that the above needs to be addressed upfront rather than with a bunch of handwaving about humanitarian issues. You'd think that the Cuban Communists should explain why their great socialist revolution so desperately needs running dog imperialist dollars to survive, but that would require consistency from Communists.

  32. Seeing this for the first time. Much better angle. I forgot how absolutely quiet the gallery was before the shot. The footage that most of us only ever saw. Angle that I saw for the first time today. I like it better because you see Tiger's reaction throughout the shot. Also you can thank me for wasting an hour because you WILL watch the rest of that video.

  34. As far as fans of other teams go, esp the Dirt Burglar fans, I think he's a good poster. He mostly talks recruiting with a sliver of shit talking - as it should be - and he takes random beratings from Horns in stride, for the most part. Most of the aggy and OU fans can't help but go full fuckface. I think it's good for the board to have some outside opinions (ie. @Doc Sam Beckett, @quigley, @George Clooney) as well as others I am forgetting. I mean, if he throws out a one-liner likes this one and gets negbombed, he knows that's part of the gig.
