it’s an aggy wet dream. Every single one of them tonight, without quite knowing why, incapable of verbalizing it...went home and tried to fuck their wives or their personal wallet size pictures of manziel.

I don't think he's delusional, I think Cade is EVERYONE's next man up. He has been recruited longer than most of the higher ranked guys, by more of the top schools than just about anyone and they've never really broken contact. I suspect that if he waits until after ESD he will become one of the most pursued guys in the country. He's faded a bit from his initial ranking but it's mostly because he doesn't dazzle with athleticism, and so he's not a LT prospect. The interesting thing to me is that he might be a more limited athlete in terms of speed/quickness but he shows really good balance and flexibility, can play low for a big man and has nice body control for a big man. There are several OT in Texas that are ranked above him that aren't better than Cade and more important to this discussion, would not draw the attention of the big schools after ESD. (Jackson, Lott, Tucker, Atkins, Boone).

Spoiler

By: Justin Wells and Eric Nahlin

Some of this is redundant but we heard it this week. If the information is positive, redundancy is a good thing.

- While there might be more Longhorns in quarantine than what‘s publicly known, we’re told the number of confirmed cases is 15, with very few even feeling sick.

- There are still a handful of Horns who have yet to return to Austin.. Players like DeMarvion Overshown, Kobe Boyce, Marcus Washington, and Montrell Estell are expected back soon, likely early July.

- LB coach Coleman Hutzler even made a trip to Arp, TX recently to check on his new linebacker, Overshown, and it was very well-received by the family. That’s another positive data point in the Hutzler column.

- The Wide Receiver position remains a popular topic as the program inches towards July. While Brennan Eagles, who sources say is running faster than he ever has, even while carrying more weight, is the likely WR1 of the group, other names are being mentioned more often. The staff is expecting Tarik Black to come in and contribute right away. This room needed a veteran in the worst way, similar to the running back room adding Tre Watson in 2018. If Black's foot is good, and reports are it is, he could be in for a 50-60 catch season. Early returns are positive on Black. Marcus Washington has been staying with his brother in Arizona working out with a trainer. He looks fantastic and the staff has high hopes for the RS freshman. Jake Smith and Jordan Whittington are each breakout candidates in 2020. As we mentioned last week, the staff is high on Josh Moore‘s potential. When it comes to play speed and running routes, he’s the fastest of the crew. The staff likes Al’Vonte Woodard’s versatility. They feel comfortable putting him at any of the three receiver spots.

- The Offensive Line is another point of emphasis this offseason. The left side and center looks salty: (left to right) Sam Cosmi-Junior Angilau-Derek Kerstetter. The right side is where Tom Herman and Herb Hand will certainly tinker to find the best duo. The first group we continue to hear is Denzel Okafor at RG and Christian Jones at RT. But fall camp might shake that up a little. Tyler Johnson is getting solid looks at right guard, with Willie Tyler mentioned as well. In both of those scenarios, Okafor would slide to right tackle. If Jones is the better tackle that Okafor, then right guard becomes the lone true competition. Of note, Rafiti Ghirmai might not be the best at snapping the football, but the staff has hopes he could play guard in a pinch. Playing center is difficult, but it’s encouraging the staff thought Ghirmai had the athleticism for the position. We hear he doesn’t lack aggression. He may be one to watch on the back-end of his career.

- Not much news from the Tight End position, but Cade Brewer and Jared Wiley will battle for the number one spot in camp. While Brewer adds experience and receiving ability, Wiley’s all around potential fits the Herman mold of TE more credibly. The sophomore has morphed in size and adds a physical component similar to what Andrew Beck gave the offense in 2018. The receiving ability is also there, but they really like his mindset. He’s hungry. We’re expecting Wiley to take the most snaps at TE in 2020.

- The Running Back room is loaded, which has been written extensively. Keaontay Ingram is the incumbent starter, but recent reports of him at 230+ pounds have people wondering how well he’ll move in pads. He wasn't a speedster to begin with, rather relying on vision, quickness, and lateral agility. Competition will be stiffer in the coming months than it was last season. How will Ingram respond? Roschon Johnson continues to get more familiar at the position, while adding quickness (that he wasn’t even lacking). The former high school quarterback is learning the nuances of the position. Then there's Bijan Robinson. How quickly he assimilates to the college game will be the biggest factor in how he contributes in his first season. But there are people in the program that believe he could be jacking carries from the other two by midseason.

- With the departure of Anthony Cook, the Defensive Back room thinned, but only a little. Who backs up Chris Adimora at Spur? We've heard BJ Foster, Marques Caldwell, and possibly Josh Thompson in the event something happens to Adimora or if they’re looking to replace Cooks ability in coverage at the position. Reminder that Chris Ash views the Spur as a linebacker first and foremost so that will likely help Foster’s case. Current sources and former sources (which I guess make them current sources again) are high on Adimora’s ability to play nickel in this system.

- Could we see any other departures? There’s one name we’re watching closer than others. It’s not a starter. It’s hardly ever a starter.

- We’re expecting Kenyatta Watson II to get extended looks at corner. The staff is high on KWII — he may have the most upside of any DB in the program per sources.

- The relationship between the players and coaches is night and day from last fall. Some of that is newness and not experiencing any adversity on the field, but there has been plenty of adversity off the field and the coaches have answered the bell. If you’re the optimist looking for silver lightings from the last few months, and especially weeks, those new relationships should be good fuel. The new coaches have really stepped up. The players feel like the coaches have their back. Hopefully that doesn’t change.

- Quick recruiting note: Texas has two elite (for the position) centers in the state this cycle and there’s some intrigue surrounding the position. This might be the first time we’ve covered center intrigue. Smooth James Brockermeyer (Fort Worth All Saints) has been heralded for over a year now, while Bulldozing Ezra Oyetade (Lakeview Centennial) is newer to the scene. That’s two center prospects who are in the discussion for the state’s top-25 overall players. I could make the case for Oyetade being a take as a guard, but that’s not on the plate as of yet. Michael Myslinski is another center candidate, though he’s from Jacksonville. Like the Brockermeyers, Myslinski also answers the question, “which o-line prospect’s father played nine years in the NFL?” Myslinski took a visit on his own to Austin recently just to get the lay of the land. Texas is setting up good contingencies...but will they need them? The staff is still full steam ahead on the Brockermeyers. They have upped their recruitments as much as they can in recent weeks. They‘ve been playing the legacy angle as well as the likeness stuff. The recent push has had some positive affect but how much remains to be seen. If UT can get to the season without a Brockermeyer committed to Alabama, it’s a minor win.

No Mitchell and no Overshown would be disastrous for the LB group. Given that he's a better recruiter than Orlando, Hutzler may also make a better pitch to Overshown for staying at LB.

No it's not because linebacker recruiting has been a shit show for years. Damn man, you need to get laid, can't imagine going through life as such a pessimist.

Overshown tweeted comparing "the eyes" to lynching. Seems a little on the nutty side

Supposedly spinning Foster down is the rumor on TFB as well..but now may be needed at the spur with Adimora now that Cook has left. Either way Foster needs to be on the field...car bumper aside

I know you have to be you but ...  I doubt either of them go anywhere, but even if they do Overshown is still a projection at the position and while his upside is very high (with athleticism and instincts), he's ALL projection at this point. Mitchell started 5 fucking games last year and was often the weakest link on the field. Hell, Tillman played in the first 4 games of the year and if he didn't injure his knee I think he'd have taken more and more snaps, instead he was injured but got to RS and still has 4 years to play. Honestly, Tillman and Gbenda are going to push those guys down the depth chart as it is, not unlike Coburn and Ossai did as they came off of their RS years, and Overshown would have to truly show out and play much better in space to steal reps. I suspect a large part of Mitchell's noted off-season issues truly revolve around the fact that he knows he's depth going in to this season. I don't want to lose either of them because depth has been such an issue but 'disastrous' is pretty dramatic for a meh player and a projection -- FFS, Cort Jaquess looked like the best LB on the team in the bowl game and certainly wasn't a demonstrative drop from a talent perspective (Thanks Todd!!)  -- It's just not a good group but the Floyd loss hurts a hell of a lot more than Juwan Mitchell does. Despite what any depth chart says, I think we'll see Adimora and Foster both on the field in a lot of alignments, making the impact of their potential loss even less.

Did Floyd stay in Austin or did he go back home after it was determined that his football career was over?

Tarik Black to come in and contribute right away. This room needed a veteran in the worst way, similar to the running back room adding Tre Watson in 2018. If Black's foot is good, and reports are it is, he could be in for a 50-60 catch season.

Texas WR with a 50 catch season in recent history:

  • 19 Duvernay (106)
  • 18 LJH (86)
  • 18 Collin Johnson (68)
  • 17 C Johnson (54)
  • 14 John Harris (68)
  • 14 Jaxon Shipley (59)
  • 13 J Shipley (56)
  • 13 Mike Davis (51)
  • 12 J Shipley (59)
  • 12 M Davis (57)
  • 10 James Kirkendoll (52)
  • 09 Jordan Shipley (116)

I know they pick numbers out of the air all the time but if Tarik Black has 60 catches next year he is going to have one of the top 5 catches by a Longhorn in the last 10 years and one of the top 10 seasons by a WR in the last 10 years (excluding Kirkendoll who had 2 TDs, 13 Shipley who had 1, and 14 Shipley who had 1)

So if he busts out 50 catches he is one of the best WR in the last 10 years at Texas and the best Grad Transfer in the last who knows how many years?

...come on.

Well considering the #2 WR in Yurich's offense

2019 - 48, though Ohio State's WR probably is probably a closer to what Texas has in terms of guys that can play in the 2 deep.

2018 - 53

2017 -  59

2016 - 73, which actually more than the 71 that Washington had.

2015 - 57, more than #1 Washington's 53

2014 - 39, this was a more balanced year and also a year where all 3 QB's where under 60% on the season. Rudolph's freshmen season.

2013 - 51

So on average the #2 guy had 54.2 catches.

The only way this happens though is if Texas actually runs NHHU and gets close to 80+ plays per game.

Two posts saying the exact same thing, and yet it's so immediately clear which one is satya's.

Satya’s just a glass half-full kind of guy but I’m sure he would also point out that said glass was dirty, small, cracked, etc as well.

Texas WR with a 50 catch season in recent history:

  • 19 Duvernay (106)
  • 18 LJH (86)
  • 18 Collin Johnson (68)
  • 17 C Johnson (54)
  • 14 John Harris (68)
  • 14 Jaxon Shipley (59)
  • 13 J Shipley (56)
  • 13 Mike Davis (51)
  • 12 J Shipley (59)
  • 12 M Davis (57)
  • 10 James Kirkendoll (52)
  • 09 Jordan Shipley (116)

I know they pick numbers out of the air all the time but if Tarik Black has 60 catches next year he is going to have one of the top 5 catches by a Longhorn in the last 10 years and one of the top 10 seasons by a WR in the last 10 years (excluding Kirkendoll who had 2 TDs, 13 Shipley who had 1, and 14 Shipley who had 1)

So if he busts out 50 catches he is one of the best WR in the last 10 years at Texas and the best Grad Transfer in the last who knows how many years?

...come on.

This data is all pretty irrelevant since most of it is from completely different offenses that were utterly incompetent. CJ would’ve had 50 last year if he stayed healthy. We don’t rotate WRs a whole lot, or throw to our TEs that much, so basically the starters at Y and X are likely to be over 50 catches every year. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that a healthy Tarik Black wins the job at X. He’s a better fit there than either Z or Y, so he may get that spot in order to get our best 3 WRs on the field. We’ll see. I don’t necessarily expect him to win X, but it’s not crazy to think he could and if he does and stays healthy, odds are pretty good he’d be over 50 catches on the year.

Supposedly Cade sometimes falls off the map (even with coaches recruiting him), which I think is why sometimes there are stretches where he’s hardly mentioned across recruiting sites for various teams

Tall and skinny and seems a little lost at times. What position do we think he can play?

The dude is 6"5' so he's seemingly been playing out of position quite a lot. If he adds weight, I wouldn't mind having him as an edge rusher. I'm guessing that is where he projects?

That’s where Minnesota and TCU we’re recruiting him, so I assume it’s the same for us.

So I just watched D'Marion Alexander's HUDLs. If you want to see a massive leap in a player year-over-year - watching him as a Soph where he's tentative, slow to react, passive really vs. his Junior highlights where he is clearly the best player on the field by a long way and is just decisive and explosive, is pretty remarkable. He can absolutely get to the QB despite a complete lack of technique. It also very much explains the super early Rhule offer. He's barely scratching the surface of what he's going to be. I would love to get some concrete measurements and testing numbers on him. I don't know if he's a take or if it indicates a miss elsewhere or anything like that - but seeing his improvement over a season, I do understand.
