You can redshirt and still play in 4 games. So even though they're transfers, that new rule (plus the 1 year rule for transfers) allows them to play and maintain the redshirt.

Something neat to keep in mind if we ever get a transfer that has to sit for a year.

But playing in Bowl Game counts for 2018 Season correct...... so 2018 ends up counting as both their transfer & Redshirt year right??

Quote:  "Adams and Jackson would be able to play in the bowl game and retain their two remaining seasons of eligibility due to the NCAA’s four-game redshirt rule."

Question:  Texas can block schools that Toneil Carter can transfer to right??  (Usually no transfers to B12 or schools on Horns schedule....)

The reason I ask is that the article below mentions Baylor, Okie Lite and SMU as possible landing spots for Toneil.....

https://hookemheadlines.com/2018/12/15/texas-football-3-potential-transfer-destinations-rb-toneil-carter/

FYI....Herman chose not to block transfer to Texas Tech of John Bonney because he was a grad-transfer....

Yes, I would think we’ll block him from everyone on our schedule for the next couple years.

Found this article on transfer changes:

https://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/news/new-transfer-rule-eliminates-permission-contact-process

New transfer rule eliminates permission-to-contact process

Beginning in October, Division I student-athletes will have the ability to transfer to a different school and receive a scholarship without asking their current school for permission.

The Division I Council adopted a proposal this week that creates a new “notification-of-transfer” model. This new system allows a student to inform his or her current school of a desire to transfer, then requires that school to enter the student’s name into a national transfer database within two business days. Once the student-athlete’s name is in the database, other coaches are free to contact that individual.

“The membership showed today that it supports this significant change in transfer rules,” said Justin Sell, chair of the Division I Transfer Working Group and athletics director at South Dakota State. “I’m proud of the effort the Transfer Working Group put forth to make this happen for student-athletes, coaches and schools.”

The previous transfer rule, which required student-athletes to get permission from their current school to contact another school before they can receive a scholarship after transfer, was intended to discourage coaches from recruiting student-athletes from other Division I schools. The rule change ends the controversial practice in which some coaches or administrators would prevent students from having contact with specific schools. Conferences, however, still can make rules that are more restrictive than the national transfer rules.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So B12 can have additional rules on transfers including allowing Head Coaches the ability to restrict in-conference transfers..... Not sure how B12 will handle this going forward.

3 years of eligibility I guess??  Probably gonna be lots of interest here.... Wonder if SEC still has rule on no in-conference transfer without Kirby's approval???

In article it says Fields "is expected to appeal to the NCAA to be eligible this season".

Not sure why NCAA would allow Fields to play in 2019  when he transfers??

A source told ESPN that Fields practiced Monday and is expected to play with the No. 5 Bulldogs against No. 15 Texas in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day (8:45 p.m. ET, ESPN).

"[Fields transferring] is a possibility, but we expect him to play in the Sugar Bowl," the source said. "It's not done. He practiced [Monday] and practiced his ass off. He's going to explore what's out there. He might come back."

The source said that Fields and his father have had multiple meetings with Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart about his future over the past few weeks, and that Fields hasn't formally requested a transfer, nor has he been placed in the NCAA's transfer portal, which notifies other schools that he's interested in leaving.

Sources told ESPN that Fields might consider Florida State, Ohio State and Oklahoma if he decides to leave.

Found this.... June 2018 article

A federal appeals court has backed an NCAA rule requiring most football players who transfer schools to sit out a year.

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago upheld a lower-court finding that NCAA transfer rules don't violate U.S. antitrust laws.

Just remembered Fields was committed to Penn State at one point when Joe Moorehead was still on that staff.  Please go to MSU Fields and terrorize aggy for 2-3 years.

From Bigup2dahorns.....

UGA Rivals:

Freshman quarterback Justin Fields has told the Georgia coaching staff that he is looking into transferring after the conclusion of the 2018 season.

Fields asked to have his name included on the NCAA Transfer Portal list. The transfer portal took the place of the release student athletes needed to get from their coaches to speak with other schools.

Fields and his family are expected to consult with attorney Thomas Mars. Mars was instrumental in helping a number of Ole Miss student athletes appeal the NCAA rule that requires transfers between FBS schools to sit out one year. Those athletes, notable Shea Patterson of Michigan, were allowed to play immediately.

All of this does not guarantee that Fields will transfer from Georgia. He was at practice today and is expected to play in Georgia's bowl game. Still, putting his name on the transfer list so other coaches can speak with him and expecting to consult with an attorney who specializes in helping players receive immediate eligibility all point to a likely transfer.

Fields isn't starting at Texas in 2020 (or 2019 if he gets that waiver).

He's not the QB that we need either. He has an ice cube's chance in hell of coming here and if that were to transpire, we'd lose both Rising and Thompson, and possibly even Roschon.

Sure it would be in poor form, and I don't think Herman is the type of cutthroat coach who would risk creating problems in the locker room to bring in Fields with Ehlinger doing well, but Fields would take that starting spot if he did transfer in.

Ice cube's chance is one thing, but his skill set is tailor made for Herman' s offense. 2-3 years of Fields would be worth losing a couple of recruits.

I don't think this is necessarily true. Ehlinger was a fucking stud this year, and it's not like Fields was able to beat out Fromm

Either way, Fields isn't going to risk going somewhere where there's a reasonable chance he doesn't win the job immediately once eligible

So coaches can no longer block transfers, with the exception of conferences being allowed to block transfers within the conference. Does anyone know if the SEC has a rule for this? Also, does the Big XII?

Can't find SEC rule..... but you are correct that Conferences can have more restrictive rules on transfers that stay in conference.... (for example if Toneil wants to go to Baylor).

Looks like B12 rule on undergrad in conference transfers is sit out a year AND lose a year of eligibility.....

Here's B12 Handbook info

6.3 Intraconference Transfers.  The eligibility of a student-athlete who transfers directly or  indirectly from one Conference Member Institution to another shall be determined by  NCAA regulations and the following Conference requirements. In the event NCAA  regulations require the student-athlete to complete one full academic year in residence  before being eligible to compete in a sport, the student-athlete shall also forfeit one  season of competition in that sport. The waiver of a NCAA transfer regulation for a  student-athlete does not negate the need for a waiver of this section.

(Grad transfers no longer have to sit out a year or get approval for in conference transfers, since new NCAA Transfer rules went into effect in Oct 2018.)

Report: Ohio State is frontrunner for Georgia QB Justin Fields

Quote

Ohio State has emerged as the frontrunner to land former five-star quarterback Justin Fields, who is expected to leave the University of Georgia after his freshman season, according to the Toledo Blade.

With the Buckeyes' quarterback room possibly uncertain next season pending Dwayne Haskins' NFL decision after the Rose Bowl, Ohio State's interest has peaked with Fields, notably his respect for coach Ryan Day as a quarterback whisperer, the report indicates.

Day helped develop Haskins, who led the nation in touchdown passes and passing yards, into a Heisman finalist this season within an offense that shattered numerous long-standing program records through the air.

Under the NCAA's new transfer rules, Georgia may not restrict Fields' decision and the quarterback is allowed to speak with coaches as he sees fit. According to reports, Fields is expected to retain attorney Tom Mars to aid with petitioning the NCAA for immediate eligibility. Mars worked with Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson and helped him earn a win with the NCAA this season in Ann Arbor after transferring from Ole Miss.

“I’ve helped more than a dozen student-athletes from different sports in the past year, but I don’t talk about it publicly unless there’s a good reason to do so,” Mars said, via The Toledo Blade.

Considered the No. 2 overall prospect in the industry-generated 247Sports Composite rankings for the 2018 cycle, Fields originally committed to Georgia over Auburn, Florida State, Florida, and Alabama in Oct. 2017. He played in 12 of Georgia's 13 games this season, but did not start one, as sophomore Jake Fromm turned in another impressive campaign.

Behind Haskins, Ohio State's collection of current quarterbacks on roster includes redshirt freshman Tate Martell, true freshman Matthew Baldwin, West Virginia graduate transfer Chris Chugunov and a pair of walk-ons.

Bucknuts analyst Bill Greene has more on the possibility of Ohio State landing Fields and where he would fit into the program's 2019 plans.

"Assuming Fields is transferring, and he is not going to go through another year as a backup, where would he go? Other than Alabama or Clemson, he is more than likely going to look at the schools where he can best be developed as an NFL starter," Greene writes. "If he is going to transfer this soon, he must be feeling he has missed one year of that development."

On the season, Fields fields completed 27 of 38 pass attempts for 328 yards and four scores. He also ran the football 39 times for 260 yards and four scores. The Florida game, coming out of the Bulldogs' open week, is the only game where he didn't take at least one snap and there's a good chance he could have earned an expanded role as a sophomore when he has a stronger grasp of the concept.

LOL after they've done with Martell exactly what UGA did with Fields (have a mini-package of running plays to keep them "engaged").

That'd be nice, but it doesn't appear we have a pre-existing relationship from his crootin days. If I had to venture a guess, I would say Colorado and Georgia would be likely.
You're probably right, but hopefully we at least make him say no. Multiple times.
