  2. Spanky, it's not my job to study a shaky premise and presentation of the situation and then explain it to the mind whence it emerges. I don't know why you quote my post and then ask me to explain something tangential to it. I will offer the opinion that you're determined to bend the "narrative" (jeez, that's a tired way for ideologues to project group thought onto someone else. It's not always a narrative. Most often what is labeled a narrative is an unpleasant reality that one refuses to face.) into some strange version to fit your desire to believe you are wise. Solipsistic? Onanistic? I'm not a doctor or philosopher. I do sense disingenuous intent that I don't associate with your past posting.

  6. Let's rephrase that. "Old people should be very cautious of going up to speak to police officers because they might get their heads busted when the police violate their rights via illegal use of force."

  7. Our police state needs a complete overhaul – not just incremental reforms here and there. There's been lots of traction on social media about the idea of defunding the police and while it sounds a bit crazy at first ("WhAt AbOuT mUrDeReRs??!"), it's actually a very practical solution to a horrific problem. Obviously this isn't something you do overnight, but the idea is that you divest the resources that are currently militarizing our police and you invest in solutions that actually work – mental health care, social services, etc. Our police budgets are extremely bloated, and even if people weren't getting murdered and/or brutalized by overzealous cops, it would make a lot more sense to spend money on preventative measures like safe housing, help for the homeless, child care for working families, etc. Why should an armed police officer show up when a homeless man takes a piss on the sidewalk? Why shouldn't that man get some actual help instead of getting tossed in the clink? Why should I get pulled over by two cops with guns when I have a taillight that burns out? Some police should be trained to respond to violent offenders, but we should absolutely have more community-based solutions and employ people who are capable of providing empathetic, practical solutions to non-violent problems. I have had very few issues where I have had to call the cops, thank goodness, but in those rare cases where I actually felt like I needed help from the police, not once has that call resulted in anything but disrespect and fear from the responding officers. I'm a white dude and I'm extremely loathe to call the police; I can't imagine what women or people of color think of asking the police for help.

  12. Yeah - he was hospitalized on Saturday but his wife said he’d been feeling run down for 4-5 days before he went to the ER. He was at the club pool and started hallucinating and having trouble breathing so they took him to the hospital. He coded early Sunday morning and it took them 37 minutes to get him back so he’s really been gone since - he never regained consciousness. His body just finally caught up today. Turns out he had some signs of very early CHF but it wasn’t effecting his daily life or causing him symptoms at all but that probably made it harder for him to fight against the virus. He was also 20 odd pounds overweight but nothing out of the ordinary for a middle aged guy. I never would have thought of him when worrying about at risk people or people with health issues. He wasn’t a triathlete and he wasn’t an obese scooter person. Just your very average man in his late 40s with the normal health stuff for someone his age. I bet many of the people that post here are very much like he was and don’t think of themselves as at risk. This virus is very serious. And most of America is acting like it’s no big deal and it’s hurting other people. Those other people are vibrant human lives with friends and wives and daughters and mothers and sisters. It’s easy to see it as just another abstract danger until it robs you of someone. Be safe y’all. And be kind to one another.

  13. My friend died at 1:00 today. He was 47. He left behind a wife and 15 year old daughter and hundreds of friends. He was a rare bird - an Alabama frat boy who was a proud liberal; so we bonded right away. He loved all kinds of music. He kicked all kinds of ass at bar trivia night. He was loud and funny and loved Alabama football. Roll Tide and Godspeed, S. I hope you’re enjoying some Golden Flake chips and a Coca-Cola with The Bear right now.

  15. He's rustled because Liz called him out accurately on something he actually did to HAMSTRING the DOJ's ability to control rogue PDs. You can read all about what he did here: https://www.themarshallproject.org/2018/11/19/here-s-why-jeff-sessions-parting-shot-is-worse-than-you-thought I read it literally the day it came out, as it affects my practice. And every attorney who read it and discussed it that day was agog at how shameless it was. Within 24 hours, we were referring to it with names like the "let cops get away with beating black people" memo. What happened in MN, and its direct connection to the GOP and this administration? It's no coincidence, it's not a bug. It's a feature. The cruelty is the point.

My titles aren't very creative. And while this is certainly not my masterpiece, it's still worthy of putting on the wall.

  25. I mean....this is what I went round and round with Baba Yaga on the Daily Texan thread about. If the vast majority of cops are really good guys....then why whenever they have the opportunity to do the right thing or the wrong thing as a group....do they choose the wrong thing? One bad apple pushed the old man down. Another bad apple stopped the one cop who FLIRTED with doing the right thing (rendering aid) from doing so. They all walked by a bleeding 75 year old man. That's bad. But now that the two bad actors have been disciplined for what was obviously uncalled for violent force.....FIFTY FUCKING SEVEN COPS UNANIMOUSLY side wiht them over the people. THIS IS WHAT THEY ARE. ALL OF THEM. I mean, what are the odds that out of 57 cops, not ONE would do the right thing? I mean, that's really bad luck for those of us who would contend "but most of them are good!" If most cops are good, what are the odds of all 57 cops involved with an incident being among the few bad ones? The math on that has to be amazing.

  28. Sadly, distributing tanks and humvees to local police department is a much more efficient political transaction than establishing assertive community based mental health care programs. Local police get some new toys, DOD draws down the old stock, General Dynamics gets a contract to replenish. Everybody wins. Except for the schizophrenic guy with spotty medication adherence who has a break infront of the 7/11 and scare some soccer mom. Maybe the cops crack his skull, maybe they just give him a ride down to the closest intake. Maybe a little bit of both. But General Dynamics gets paid. Always.

  29. I have a pretty strong belief in God, but I will preface what I say that if you do not share that same faith that it is okay. I can say this with some confidence. When enough self-professed Christians turn away from God by their own actions this is what you get. You can look through the Old Testament to see time after time when the Jews turned from God what happened. It was never good. We, as a nation, turned our backs on those who needed help. We turned our backs on immigrants and the poor. We stopped showing love to those who need it most. These are the basic tenets of being a Christian. Not all of us do this, but enough do that it is embarrassing and dispiriting to see how we still treat immigrants despite all the positive contributions they make to our society. Thanks to that treatment of our fellow human beings we got this moron as a leader and also due to the actions of hatred, bigotry and about a 100 other things the Evangelicals do that is garbage while still maintaining to be a Christian. It's going to take awhile to clean this mess up. You don't even have to be religious to just be a good human being. I mean my God just treat everyone with dignity and respect instead of looking at someone as being less of a human being than you because their skin is darker. I almost hope Jesus decides to make his return while I am still alive just to see the look on the faces of millions of white people who are going to be shocked to see his skin color.

  31. That's an interesting question. I don't care that Lindsay Graham is gay and I don't think anybody else really does either. Further, outing such a public gay man only makes it harder for LGBTQT folks to live their lives on their own terms. But frequenting prostitutes is another story. Lindsay Graham is the chairman of the judiciary committee, and if he's in a position to be blackmaled into a compromising position that's a matter of the public interest that could impact our national security. In other words - we shouldn't out gay Senators. We should absolutely out Senate committee chairmen using prostitutes.

  34. hey, cop supporters, here's the deal. watch this video. the old guy gets pushed over. one cop actually appears to have a heart and starts to kneel down to check on the guy, before another cop grabs his shoulder and pushes him away from checking on the old guy bleeding from a head wound on the pavement. this is why people are saying and spraying things like "all cops are bastards." a shred of humanity appears, and must be redirected immediately, never mind the old guy bleeding from his head unconscious, maybe even dead, on the concrete.

  37. Of you’re keeping score at home, I stopped in today on way back to deer camp to get the blasted bracelet from hell for my youngest SIL. I walked into the joint and the 2 women behind the counter and one woman in front of the counter looked at me then looked at each other then started giggling and nodding their heads. One of the two broads behind the counter reaches onto the shelf behind her and pulls the confounded bracelet of the shelf, already in a bag and hands it to me, saying “we knew you’d be back.” FML

  39. This is so incredibly sad to watch. A pandemic with no end in sight and a populace that is fed up with black men being killed by the police for no reason. The response from the police is not unexpected, but this is not the America I grew up believing in. Protesters should be able to have their voice heard without getting gassed or beaten. This is some 3rd world awfulness going on. We are in some real deep shit and we don't have a way out of this anytime soon.
