They can feel whatever the fuck they want to, but those words were written some 40 years after slavery to mock the university president at a campus with only white students, faculty, and administrators. Only a dense person would relate those words to slavery after being made aware of those facts. The words have nothing to do with slavery because there had been no slaves for 40 years.13 points

I get such tired head over people having to take one side or the other on the protest/social distancing thing when the reality is that it's probably a little but of this and a little bit of that and I would think logically when you put mass protests together in places where reopening had happened faster or social distancing had relaxed it was/is likely a toxic mix. Neither is solely to blame, neither is solely blameless.....nuance and reason always escaping us.10 points

And let's be up-front about this: if Trump and the GOP pull that, it will be civil war, and I will be one of the people taking up arms. The GOP thinks that no non-GOP-fellater has weapons. They're really, really, really fucking wrong. I think it's fucking hideous that good and peaceful citizens are actually having conversations about how they would resist, with force, an unlawful overthrow of the democratic process, but I damned well know the conversation is happening. When the election is over, Trump best get the fuck out of our house, or we'll need to evict him ourselves.10 points

Of all the things people have been arguing about changing due to inherent racism, this is probably the most obviously racist. I think making UND change away from the Fighting Sioux is an overreaction. It's an obvious homage. Same with the Illinois Illini. No offense intended clearly. The Redskins are on par with having teams called the Atlanta N*ggers, Seattle Chinks, or Miami Spics. It's completely beyond the pale (no pun intended) and has been for years. I can't imagine being butt hurt about this, but welcome to America 2020, where the Confederate flag has become fetishized by northern Conservatives, and the god damn President is using blatant Nazi imagery in his reelection campaign. Many like the drama of being offended. The song wasn’t targeting blacks, and until kids were told that they needed to be offended, no one in like...forever thought of it as such. And I actually like The Eyes of Texas. Besides being unifying for Texas fans, it’s just about the only school song (not fight song, dammit) that anyone recognizes unless they went to the school.8 points

You’re not pointing anything out. The Brocks were already trending to Bama way before all this. You don’t like what’s happening with the players so you’re baselessly trying to attribute causation to justify your feelings. Go back to the football board, Cloak Room or whatever idiotic echo chamber supports your stupidity.8 points

I did it. I finally did it. I finally made the perfect pizza. Best pizza I've ever eaten and it's not even close. Magical... Dough, brushed lightly with EVOO. Slight sprinkling of coarse sea salt. Light spread of homemade sauce which was 1 can peeled san marzano tomatoes, handful of basil, small handful of garlic cloves (4-5ish), salted to taste. Then light sprinkling of shredded mozzarella , some pepperoni, some chunks of fresh mozzarella, a few leaves of fresh basil, and a light sprinkling of fresh grated parmesano reggiano... Finish with a little kosher salt... Amazing flavor. Plated with a little fresh ground red pepper flake and some freshly grated parm...8 points

They already renamed several buildings before the players demands. Just because they have a process, i.e. a BOR vote, doesn't mean they won't do jack shit. Maybe you don't like the process but the idea these other schools are being praised for renaming buildings when Texas has already done that multiple times is complete nonsense. You act like these other schools are progressive because they changed the name of one building when Texas has already been doing that for years. Now maybe you don't like the process of a BOR vote but the idea they haven't "done jack shit" is crazy talk. And I bet most of those player demands will eventually be met.8 points

The United States is not cozy with Russia. If you are dirty with Russian oligarchs, you will be investigated. We have crushing sanctions on Russia. Here is the list. It is long. https://www.rferl.org/a/russia-sanctions-timeline/29477179.html Russia's economy dwarfed by the United State's. California has a bigger GDP than Russia. Texas and New York also have larger GDP. China has been the bigger threat. And with the needed uncoupling from China that friction is ongoing, strains in the relationship will continue. The biggest threat on the horizon is the World thinking the United States and its citizens are the biggest bunch of dumb-fucks in the world with our "handling" of the COVID virus. It has been beyond idiotic. A pandemic is not a partisan issue. Tump is responsible for that one - but there has been a lot of stupidity by idoits in general. Hopefully, with Goldman Sachs coming out indicating usage of masks will prevent a 5% GDP loss, the nation will come together - and act responsibly. https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2020/06/30/goldman-sachs-face-mask-mandate-could-save-economy-5-hit/5349496002/ The world is watching and wondering whether the US Dollar should be Global Reserve Currency. If we lose that status, it's game over.7 points

1st we have no idea what CDC did or didn't commit to at the meeting. 2nd or 3rd hand crap isn't something to go on here. 2nd the right thing to do or not, there is a labyrinthian amount of crap you have to dig through to change things on a public university campus the size of Texas. 3rd The BOR aren't just sitting around waiting for the University to need them to show up for a meeting. They have their own lives and concerns going on in the middle of a pandemic. It isn't that simple and it is infantile to act like it is.7 points

There is no defining generation x movie, as you say, and there never will be. There is a defining line between generation x though and a millennial. And it’s this. If you get arrested and you’re a millennial, the first person you would call is your parents. If you’re generation x, however, the last person you would call is your parents.6 points

Yes, you do. But a fucking firearm is literally THE LAST RESORT. You don't turn a confrontation into a gunfight unless and until you are ready to turn it into a fucking gunfight. That's the whole point here, the shitty decisionmaking of the "I have a gun so I can protect myself from anything and everything at all times" crowd. As a responsible and sane gun owner, you are fucking obligated to do everything possible to avoid pulling your gun. And yes, that damned well means retreating to your vehicle and waiting out someone yelling at you. They are yelling at you. They are not creating an imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury. They are just being assholes who piss you off, and that's not an adequate reason to pull a gun. I say this as someone who has been around guns for nearly 50 years, and has had to opportunity to brandish a gun in self defense on more than one occasion. It's a very, very serious move. The most serious of moves. Your goal should be to never ever fucking do it.6 points

Or what about something like those alien tyrannies from the old Star Trek show, where women run the whole planet and dudes just lounge around eating grapes and romantically servicing their women overlords on request? If we’re not going to be free, we might as well have comfortable sofas, all the grapes we can eat, and sex.6 points

Maybe because in part, if you have a pulse and have 3 opportunities to spell CAT after being spotted the C and the A, you are admitted at those "fine institutions of greater learning." UT is one of the most liberal, public universities in the US. We currently have statues of MLK, Jr., Barbara Jordan, Cesar Chavez. We previously removed statues of Robert E. Lee, Albert Sidney Johnston, John Reagan, James Stephen Hogg and moved them Briscoe Center for American History. Good Lord, we aren't aggy which has a bunch of old, former yell leaders doing their chants during BLM protests. Like all institutions of higher learning, we must remain open to intelligent viewpoints. If players attending the University of Texas wish to not participate in athletics until certain demands are met, that is their right. That is an adult decision. However, with adult decisions come adult consequences. A decision like that at 21 years old has the potential to impact them for decades and could jeopardize a far greater platform in the future. Now, I do not believe we should yank their scholarships. If they wish not to play, they can attend class and use the time they would otherwise spend in practice or at games to hone their views on life and the world. If they choose not to continue their athletic careers, we can still enhance their lives through academic opportunities.6 points
