  1. When Putin annexed Crimea, he claimed that it was only because he wanted to protect ethnic Russians and that Crimea wanted to be annexed. He then stated that he Russia would stop there and had no plans for further annexations. On the old site, I was calling for intervention and the removal of Russia from Crimea and the response was “we don’t want to get into a nuclear conflict over a small patch of land.” The cliff notes of my response are that appeasement didn’t work with Hitler and it will not work with Putin. He’ll come back for more, but he will be more patient than Hitler in doing it. I cautioned that we either stop him at Crimea or risk more death and destruction in the future. How much more evidence do we need? Where is the line? How many more lives need to be destroyed? The best time to stop Putin was 2014. The second best time is now. It needs to end with this attempted annexation.

  2. So let me spell this out clearly. First, in the absence of nuclear weapons Putin doesn’t get a choice whether to stop fighting for that land, on the battlefield it’s looking more and more likely that he’d actually lose it. Second, he’s claiming now that he’s taken territory that he doesn’t even control at the moment, that is fully under Ukrainian control. So he’s reached into his pocket and placed the split atom on the table— telling Ukraine to get out, give him what he wants. The precedent here is for every shitty ass authoritarian regime to go get nuclear weapons and then not even try to win a war. Just be shitty enough to make people believe you’ll use them. That’s not a world Ukrainians or I want to live in.

  5. The problem is, everything you are suggesting essentially happened after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. Everyone said, 'let him have it', 'it isn't worth fighting over'. A few brave souls pointed out that appeasement rarely works. And now we have Russia attempting to grab more pieces of the same neighbor, sovereign state. I don't think we need any more data points to know how Russia will act going forward. In fact, this time, they've plainly said they feel they have a right to even more land that doesn't belong to them, even past the borders of Ukraine. If there is war with Russia, it will only happen because Russia forced it. They continue to blatantly ignore international law, and continue to dare anyone to try to stop them. FAFO. Fuck Putin.

  8. We have a legitimate opportunity to do something for the future in a way no other generation has. We have a hyperpower military being used to finally say “the era of conquest is over” and have everyone on planet earth believe it because we stared down the country that is nuked to the hilt like it is nothing. Or we can say that if you are one of the lucky few countries that have nukes, take what you want. Those are two totally different futures we are building. That’s worth risking a lot to me.

  10. This reminds me of when I was a medical resident and a guy came into the ER complaining of rectal pain. We do an xray and find a screwdriver, a soda can, a set of car keys and a small tool box in his rectum. We rush him to surgery to remove these items and as we are prepping him I can't help but ask him how this happened. He says "I fell down the stairs." When I present him at ground rounds and state that "The patient states these items appeared in his rectum after a fall down the stairs" there was no discussion of "Wow, this unchartered medical circumstances!" No one proposed a literature search to see if "flaccid rectal syndrome" was a thing. No one called the social worker to do a house visit see if this man's stairs when indeed expectantly shoving tools in his rectum. We fucking laughed, and the then moved on. Somehow I feel like if the room had been filled with lawyers the discussion would still be going on.

  11. For those worrying about nuclear war breaking out- this is how brinksmanship works. In the Cold War, at one point, Khrushchev felt Kennedy was weak and tentative, and could be taken advantage of. He closed the road from west Germany to Berlin, saying no vehicles could travel it without a border inspection. Kennedy ordered a full military caravan, trucks filled with armed US troops, assembled at the border. He put a senior general in charge. At the agreed upon time, the order was given and that caravan started up and drove across the border and didn’t stop until they reached Berlin. Khrushev’s order was meaningless, because Uncle Sam said, “Hell,no!” My dad said US money was worthless in Berlin that night- US troops are and drank for free. The Berliners knew what had been averted. Sure, I guess the Russkis could have forced the issue, and there’d be a war. That’s on them. We weren’t obeying orders from fucking Russia.

  14. It's funny seeing the lawyers tell me I'm overreacting to all these specious legal filings because the courts will OBVIOUSLY call bullshit on them and treat them appropriately. It's like y'all weren't paying attention during the decades long assault on Roe made up by a bunch of specious legal filings and unconstitutional law, that was all bullshit up until the supreme court decided that they were no longer bound by precedent while taking aim at the civil progess of the Warren court. We've seen this pattern before between the American right and the judicial system. It's happening again now. And it'll succeed because y'all think it's too preposterous to succeed.

  15. And I will say this about Keef, we obviously don’t agree with each other, but I appreciate the civil discussion and the willingness to consider the other side’s position. I wish that was a more common thing here. And yeah, I’m guilty of not doing that enough myself.

  19. The thing that’s so vexing to non-lawyers isn’t the delay, it’s the absurdity of treating such preposterous claims as serious issues to discuss. Hearing things about “uncharted legal waters,” or “open legal question” when it comes to things that are on their face moronic is akin to having an existential crisis. The vanity of pretending that this fatuousness requires some somber, legal analysis and explanation is just too much for the non-legal mind to fathom. Whatever the final result, it feels like it’s already baked in and we’re just watching it play out. All of the legal reasoning is just trying to come up with some pretext to justify however this all plays out. I get that it’s necessary, but it’s necessary like the coordinator search will be in a few months. It’s meaningless; all is vanity.

  22. My suggestion to avert nuclear war is to covertly let every military commander, high ranking government official, and other important Kremlin figures know that if a nuclear warhead is used on a NATO nation, everyone they know and hold dear to them will be targeted for assassination. Their brother living in Vienna? Gone. Their 22 year old socialite daughter living in Paris? Bullet to the head. Their 5 year old grandson playing with toy Z tanks in preschool? Accidentally falls off a balcony. We will kill everyone they hold even a passing affection towards. After that is all done, we'll come for you. Of course, this is probably why I'm not in charge.

  24. Jesus Christ people that is the most overrated talking point in the history of Texas football. Bush wasn't in the game because having him in was pointless. We weren't going to give a shit about Reggie Bush because Lendale White was their power back and everyone in the stadium knew he was getting it. And White had been killing us all second half. Bush was exactly where he belonged on that 4th and 2 play, watching it with everyone else. They weren't going to waste a potential blocker by having Bush in the game and they already had Jarrett out wide occupying a CB. USC ran exactly what they should have run but Texas just beat them on the play. Michael Huff came flying in and took on a pulling guard in the hole like a badass. Two great teams, we won that play. The end.

  25. This is another great example of on of the major things that is really slowing down the UKA advances are now natural barriers, not necessarily Russian troops. The salient moving NW out of Siversk (very bottom right arrow) only has to advance just a few km because to the NE of Lyman is a large lake and then as you follow the lake north is swap/marshland that may or may not be easily passable for armor. The current UKA advance east of Oskil that is splitting to finish the encirclement of Lyman, and then a projected advance to Svatove is currently marked as only extended to the banks of the river feeding the lake NE of Lyman (once again marshlands and can the UKA armor get through to hit Svatove from the south). The advances from Kupiansk and Dvoricha (the 2 northern arrows) are instead following the highway (and most likely advancing on the preprepared positions) and are north of where that river ends. What is more interesting is that the Lyman pocket, once fully closed, adds a second location that is now inside the 30km firing range of the UKA barrel artillery (the first is the ridge directly west of Svatove on the UKA side of the Oskil river) and so as the Oskil river group works its way across the marsh/river there after closing the Lyman pocket, the artillery units should be able to roll in behind to provide additional fire support and begin softening up Svatove. Once Svatove falls, the next major defensive line should be on the N/S inline with Misky down the river to Sievierdonetsk, with the added bonus that Svatove is a little more that 30km from Starbolisk, or now would be in conventional artillery range. That entire front is hanging on by a thread at this point, and slowly more and more people are realizing how quickly this could become a collapse with not a ton of place for the troops to pull back to. Once again is this poor planning, poor execution in the field by the RU, lack of COC, a lack of troops, or a mixture of all of it by the RU.

  27. Fortunate for trump that he's got cannon in his pocket to do exactly that and throw up every procedural delay that a district judge can to further deny justice from the American people. Doesn't make a shit if dearie won't tolerate it, cannon will overrule him and allow it It'd be one thing if trump were raising genuine issues in his appeals and filings. But he's not. It's completely specious and farcical. And yet you think that it's unreasonable and impatient to be frustrated and concerned by these completely fabricated delays? As it stands, district judge cannon can do whatever the fuck she wants until removed, and it's up to the court system to bat a thousand to beat her and trump's delaying effort. Because otherwise any possible loose thread will be exploited in bad faith (just like we're seeing now) to further delay things and run the clock. It doesn't matter if trump has no evidence to back his claims, cannon (and you in this thread lol) will treat them as legally salient and incredibly important filings, despite being filled with zero actual content that's supported by more than rhetoric. I know that this is but one case and one judge, but it just takes one of these instances to completely break the way the law works. And we're seeing it in action right now.

  29. Read the article linked in the tweet. A small excerpt (the rest of his MOH story is even more unbelievable): He was pronounced dead and placed in a plastic bag. Luckily, one of his friends recognized him and immediately called the doctor. The bag was rapidly filling with blood. With 37 bullet, shrapnel and bayonet wounds, eyes caked in blood, and no obvious heartbeat, the doctor concluded that Benavidez is indeed dead. But he was not. Unable to move or speak, he managed to do only one thing – spit into doctor’s hovering face. He was immediately evacuated back to his old Booke Army Medical Centre, where he recovered. For his immense bravery, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and four Purple Hearts.
