  1. First time I met him, actually a couple days before he came up from Houston, he asked me if I wanted some baseball cards. I still don't know jack about baseball cards, but I said sure, why not. So he sent me some phone pics of baseball cards on top of a wardrobe. Also, at the time, as happens to artists and writers, he said he was almost dead broke. I see the photo but all my eyes latch onto are a familiar orange coin amongst the cards and clutter. I call him up. "Yo dude, is that a coin? Does it have a bald-headed dude facing left? Does it say 'Diez Pesos?'" Yes, yes, yes. "Dude that's a quarter ounce of gold. You aren't broke duuude, you got gold." So when he pulls up in Bama he wants to take them to a coin shop or something. He has multiple small gold coins. I'm like "No need" because I want to buy them. We jump on the internet, split the difference between what a coin shop would pay and charge, and kaching. I was like "How long have you had that gold?" He said " I just thought it was an old gold-colored Mexican coin." Which it quite literally was. They belonged to his late uncle, who died very young in the 80s(?) I had him teach me the uncle's name so I could thank him. Next day my wife came in on the train from Philadelphia. About the only thing we splurge on are sleeper cars to and from Philadelphia. Johnny took in the power of the big-ass locomotives rumbling in, and he was hooked. A few days later he was on that train headed to Virginia on the next step of his Scotch-Irish pilgrimage. While we waited on the platform, we saw one semi-attractive woman among the lumpish mob. "That's an Amtrak 8," we both said. Months later he came back through, children in tow, and as happens with artists and writers, I was broke but he had money. He took us all out for pizza.

  4. I have difficulty understanding many things in this country. Many, Many, Many things that are going on in this country. I don't understand the appeal of fascism. I don't understand a lack of understanding for how "community" works in the biggest sense, that we're all better off if we work together. I don't understand the meanness, the cruelty. You're scratching your head, thinking logically, and perplexed, not realizing that half or more than half of this country thinks nothing like you, and sees no farther than they want to see. I know smart, SMART people who dismiss January 6th as a bunch of rubes, and that's no reason to judge a party of people because of the loons. But you've touched on it with the money thing. People have seen the last two years, and their difficulties, and they ascribe it to the current guy, not the last guy that left a shit sandwich. And they see just enough reason to give pause, and think "well, maybe the last guy wasn't so bad." All they need is a seed of doubt. I know lots of people that I think held their nose and voted for Biden, and I really don't get the impression they're going to do so again. This conversation ended with "I think Republicans should blow up the debt ceiling." He said that. And he admitted that it would be catastrophic if it happened while he was in office. But since it's Biden, he doesn't care. He doesn't care about this country. He doesn't care about anyone but himself. That should disqualify him from office in the minds of everyone, but it won't. Because for some twisted reason his cruelty makes some people feel good. So he says fuck it, burn American down and I'll be able to claim it was the democrats. He doesn't care. Whether you agree with their policies or not, someone shouldn't be allowed president if they can't even FAKE caring about anyone.

  6. His article about his mom got to me like really got to me. Maybe the trauma - not the same but a lot of us share a common experience when you talk about childhood trauma. Maybe it’s how close he was to my musical epicenter (I named my son after Guy Clark), maybe how he passed is too similar to a friend I lost that I still miss most days. Seems like some of you might be having a hard time too. Not sure what to say. So I made a playlist. It wasn’t planned, I was listening to Bonnie Raitt of all artists and one thing led to another. It’s for him but for you fellas too. it’s ok to be sad, some times our sadness is all we can really call our own. Sorry you’re gone MAC. I’m tired of loss, I bet you are too.

  7. I hear you @Gil Bang You're free to go back and look up my history on this site, though I'll save you the trouble. Long story......even longer than needed. I was initially influenced by Reagan as I was raised under a conservative household. In high school I was an intern with my Congressman Bill Archer ®. Appointed by Congressman Archer to a U.S. Service Academy, served as an officer in the USNR. At this time late 90's.I was still very "pro conservative/republican" I was a long time listener to AM talk radio (Rush/Hannity/Beck) in the mid 2000's. I really started questioning what I was listening to. During the Obama years I had a come to "Jesus" moment. What Rush et all were preaching on the radio was not what I was experiencing in real life. However, at this point I had been pretty brainwashed to be anti-Hillary. Fuck me. I'm willing to admit that I did vote for Trump in 2016. I did have some reluctance, as I did get a very strong "piece of shit" vibe from him. However, I convinced myself that the "weight" of the Office of The President of The United States would reel him in...............fuck me! Good news is, my mistake has opened me up to what the GOP really is. My mantra since then has to never vote for any republican/conservative who ever supported Trump. I'm happy to say I've been proactively campaigning for democrats in my district since six months after the 2016 election. Long story short. Fuck Trump! People are capable of change, they just need to be able to admit they fucked up.

  10. I'm a Boomer. My friends are mostly Boomers. We seldom (never) talk about holding onto our power or taking it from somebody else. Nobody does. Like people of every age, we don't have much power. There are plenty of things to resent about Boomers or anybody else, but all the things you name are political and not, in my opinion, delineated by generation. The part of the electorate embracing the awful things you accurately list is most homogenously white. White people (men. I'm one of those, too.) have operated with an assumption of their place in a hierarchy of their own creating. A great many of us walk around complacently unaware of the world for Black people and women. The smack in the face of Me Too and BLM indeed woke some of us up to that blind complacency. I aspire to being labeled woke. I know, at best, I'm awakened to my blindness. What else have I been missing? How do I remedy this? I'm not thinking as a Boomer or even a Dem. Just a suburban white boy grown into late manhood still trying to get a few things right. Boomers my age got all the breaks. Too late for the draft. Still in the post WWII economic boom where the US had a madly disproportionate share of the world market. The very real threat of nuclear war diminished when I was still relatively young. I didn't will it or steal it. I was born in what human history will call the best time and place ever for a common person. I'll die before the seas rise much. Just fucking lucky. One of the things I do to try to correct the course of the country is only vote for white men when the alternatives are downright bad. I'd mandate that white men take a 20 year break (maybe even a Sabattical) from running everything. I think there'd be less carnage of all types and more cooperation. It's the nervous, stupid, angry, insecure among white men that you have to look out for no matter their generation, my friend. Written without rancor. I'm starting to write long again. I better watch that.

  11. I This is good advice, but they also say they are being ganged up on. As for using sarcasm as a weapon, that would maybe work, but it’s easier to ask them to do than it is for them to accomplish. Heinrich is older, and can probably handle that (after some practice) but Adolf is very sensitive.

  12. Ok, in order. The federal branch, unfortunately, is rather limited in education reform. I assume you weren't a fan of student loan forgiveness? That's fine. Unemployment is at record lows (if that doesn't reduce the divisiveness--and it hasn't--then nothing will). He's gone to every Republican state that's needed federal assistance and extended the olive branch, knowing full well they'll turn on him the second he leaves. How does a President "improve our fiscal/monetary system?" Is this a crypto thing? He's taken huge chunks out of the national deficit. Again, you've listed a lot of generalities and unrealistic expectations. If you're going to call someone incompetent, you need something a little more specific. I had pretty low expectations for him, but he's mostly exceeded them.

  29. I would have paid a small fortune to listen to MAC and RDC…well…just shoot the gotdamn breeze, if I’m being honest. This place attracts characters, and it’s like my favorite corner of the internet becomes a little darker when one passes on. I wasn’t as familiar with MAC as many of you were, so my words ring pretty hollow…but guys like him are the Machi Cure at Uchi in an otherwise soulless landscape of flash-frozen, microwaved fish sticks that goes for storytelling in the Tik Tok age. Glad his legacy will live on through his long form. “There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. You *potentially* shit on a poster's news sources They ask your sources You repeatedly refuse to say any of your new sources, but instead offer up the shit on any other news sources the original poster wants to provide. You're about a mile below arguing in good faith. What a fucking pathetic piece of shit move. You probably refuse to fuck your wife, but absolutely will sit in a corner and critique the guy who will.

  32. I may not be the best role model. My daughter has Autism but you were never know now. She is going to graduate from UT next year a year early. In 4th grade this other girl kept bullying my daughter and she was also bullyng other kids in the class. My daughter wasn't strong willed at the time and it really effected her. She couldn't even understand what it was to be mean. The other girl's mom worked for the school district and was a bitch about the entire thing. The school "tried" to help but not really and they seemed to be afraid of her. After a meeting at the school I may or may not have threatened to slap the shit out of the mom and beat the shit out of the dad of the other girl (in the parking lot when no one else was around) if they didn't do something about their little shit head. Magically things changed and the other parents would flee in my presence.

  34. There is nothing centrist about letting the guy who relentlessly undermines democracy and tried to overthrow an American election sit up there in front of cheering fans and repeat the exact lies he used to fuel an attempted coup. No network needs to be shooting for the "middle" when it comes to the continuum of reality vs bullshit.

  35. The GOP is a far more abject disaster than the Democratic Party. The biggest knock on the Democrats is that they can't get anything done. The biggest knock on the GOP is that they want to destroy the country in the name of maintaining power. This is not a joke. Saying anything less is delusional.

Trump is literally the worst option ever in the history of ever and has endangered the survival of this country and rekindled racism in a way that most of us have never actually seen, and also revealed how fucking idiotic is nearly a half of the voting adults in this nation. Biden is old and stutters and makes the occasional verbal gaffe.

As Bama Chick has already pointed out, Collins broke into the industry working for the fucking Daily Caller, Tucker's nazi online rag that he ran before he got his nazi show on Fox, where she performed shining examples of journalism like ranking hot Syrian refugees. Just a real serious reporter and not-at-all one of countless conservative affirmative-action hires CNN has made over the years.
