Trump is such a fucking moron. He used to boast about Operation Warp Speed and how he was responsible for bringing out Covid vaccines in record time. But his lies and mixed messages during the pandemic resulted in his base becoming a bunch of dumb anti-vaxxers. So they booed him at his rally when he brought up the vaccine and now he’s forced to court the anti-vaxxer vote. Stupid sonofabitch. The truth, of course, is that any president would’ve dumped a lot of money into getting vaccines released and Trump bungled so many other things that exacerbated the crisis, like throwing out the pandemic response playbook, dismantling the White House pandemic response team, pulling scientists out of China, detaching from the WHO, etc. But that was one little thing that he could legitimately take some credit for and he tossed it away. (Let’s not forget that he got his vaccination in secret and didn’t publicize it.) I got the Pfizer vaccine and they got no money from Trump, they produced their vaccine all on their own, so fuck him anyway.8 points

Was surprised today. went up to see my dad. He says, hey, want to go see a 1929 Ford Tri Motor? Hell yeah is the correct response. So we go out to the airfield near Sherman. He volunteers with the Civil Air Force there. We get there as the plane is coming in for landing. Damn what a sight. Commander of the Squadron walks up and says here you go Sir, here are your tickets. He looks at me and says ya ready? There were three. Wife was tired, long week and decided to stay and just relax. Dad gave them to one of the cadets and we all went off to board. I have flown on a lot of aircraft, but this was one to never be forgotten. @RDCanecutter and @Braff Zacklin, you know I am looking for the model to build. Wife is pissed. But hey, she made the decision and he would not ruin my surprise. Damn what a surprise. Damn what a flight. And pretty cool to do it with the 84 year old Colonel. He is going take us out in the AM and if weather permits, go again.7 points

holy fuck is this wrong. the government built the railroads, period, and paid private individuals handsomely to do so. it was fully fucking intentional. the robber barons didn't get out front of it, they hitched their wagons to government and then warped government further in their interest. the policy of the united states is to make a few individuals ridiculously, mind bendingly wealthy. and there's a bunch of petit-rich and outright poors who think that's all just happenstance and the government not only doesn't have anything to do with it, but the government is actually standing in the way of it. it's a complete lie pushed by billionaires through a web of bullshit think tanks peddling narratives to poors. and every once in a while when the citizens through their government decide that maybe billionaires shouldn't be killing quite so many of the rest us we get focused, polity-bending action funneled through the web created by those same think tanks. the powell memorandum may have taken decades to come to its full fruition but if there's one thing generational wealth is good at, it's long term thinking.7 points

As long as Ukraine wants to keep fighting, we should support them. The attemped violent overthrow of a democratic ally should always be opposed - I hate that this is even a matter of debate in this stupid simulation. My Euro roots are about as far west as you can get and still be in Europe, but I can imagine the...concern...that is happening in many countries there. Yes, we should have thrown in more support, more quickly. But, in the ugly world of geopolitics, bleeding Russia is considered a goal just as important as helping Ukraine. I don't like it, but we all know it's true. The US elections will certainly have an impact on continued support, but I'm not sure I agree that support will dry up even if Biden wins. According to that article, "well, since all wars end in negotiation", (duh!), "Ukraine should just negotiate now, regardless of their leverage or lack thereof". I guess my response to that would be: "Fuck you. That's Ukraine's decision." sorry for the word vomit.7 points

The smart money is spending $20,000 on tattoos because to get them they have to skin your entire body. Back to prepping, any list that doesn't start with "Lots of Friends" and "Hand-pumped Water Well" is a list of junk that people will scavenge off of your body. Preppers don't seem to think about making friends for some reason. That's assuming Mad Max levels of Mayhem. But SHTF could have lots of notches that it hits before swirling into complete cannibalism. [Bubba Gump Voice]You got your mild depression SHTF. You got your Mexico in the 1980s bottom-falls-out-of-the-currency-but-you-still-can-catch-a-taxi SHTF. Then they's Hurricane Katrina SHTF cept spread over a whole state or two. Some folks like gang-infested Honduras SHTF, but you can still go on Mercado Libre in Honduras and buy a sun dress, if that floats your boat. They's Venezuela SHTF, then they's Somalia SHTF and Eastern Ukraine SHTF, where I think the shit gets all over you no matter which way the fan is pointed. Anyway, long story short, all y'all old fat fucks gon die.[/BGV]7 points

The real issue is the money going up the economic ladder and then stagnating up there. It isn't getting turned around and spent on the business or on the employees that made the surplus - it goes to shareholders and outside interests that don't generate value and merely trade on it. There's a real issue happening where on paper billionaires (thanks to a large value of stocks) can get loans against their paper to turn it into cash and never pay taxes on it, since debt isn't taxable. It's causing that money to leave the economic cycle and just become hoarded, while still inflicting inflation on the economy at large7 points

So this issue has recently become very personal to me. Let’s just say I can now testify from personal experience that, as I’ve long believed, there are a multitude of situations in which “abortion care” (in quotes to ensure a very broad interpretation) becomes a true medical necessity, and this renewed wave of faux religious bullshit has made true medical needs excruciatingly difficult and traumatic to obtain, for no other reason than people’s narcissism and refusal to accept that the issue is way, way broader than terminating a fetus as a form of birth control. Not sure if and when I’ll be ready to talk in more details here, but there are situations that these zealots either refuse to believe exist, or know exist and still support complete bans on “abortion care” (again broadly quoted), the latter of which are truly monstrous people if they know and still support putting women through literal nightmarish experiences.7 points

After a hurricane, a whole shit ton of power line poles needed to be replaced. The local electric company hired a crew of UT grads, a team of Rice grads, and a team of aTm grads to do the work. After the first day, the crews came back to the foreman and he asked how man poles they got put in. The Rice crew said "we got 28 put in today." The UT crew said, "we got 30 put in today." The aTm crew looked at the foreman and said, "we got 3 put in!" The flabbergasted foreman looked at the aTm lead and said, "wtf, man!? Why'd you only get 3 done when the Texas guys and Rice guys got 30 and 28?" The aTm lead, with a smug look on his face, said to the foreman, "You should see how much of the pole they left sticking out of the ground!"7 points

I just read this whole thread, so I wanted to jump in here. First of all, I appreciate everyone's opinion. And more specifically I agree with some folks here about certain issues. I want everyone to know that we don't think or expect the OTF message board to be for everyone. In fact, we know it won't be. It's simply not what we're attempting to do. There are already places where people are comfortable and where they enjoy being. SurlyHorns is a perfect example of this. Folks enjoy this place. Clearly. Hell, I enjoy it when I come over here, that's one of the reasons I first reached out to Rick, so I totally get it. The second part is really important to me and why we manage the OTF message board the way we do in comparison to other "premium" sites... When I say dozens of recruits, parents of recruits, and parents of existing players on the team watch or listen to OTF daily, it is a very real thing. I think every single recruit who committed to Texas last year - all of them - knows and has watched OTF. I'm not saying that to brag, I'm saying it because that specific viewership brings a certain level of responsibility to OTF as it relates to the university on the whole. In my opinion, it's important to have a place like the OTF message boards and a site like OTF to be relatively clean. Not without opinion mind you, but certainly one that would not shock the system of newcomers either. I feel like OTF does a really good job of holding up that end of the bargain, and we will continue to do so. The third thing is this: While Surly is primarily a message board/community. OTF is primarily a news service with a community attached. OTF is much more like Orangebloods, Inside Texas or Horns247. Each of those sites, I have found through the years, gets extremely provincial. They don't like it when another site is referenced or they get petty about their own reporting, etc. I've been doing this stuff for 30 years and I'm just done with that. I also know that some parents of recruits sometimes subscribe to those sites, visit the message boards, and they see a bunch of in-fighting, followed by nudie pics, name calling, or cliques that live to make fun of others, and the parents immediately think to themselves, what the hell is going on at Texas? Is that's what's best for Texas? So for me, this is NOT about OTF vs OB. Or OTF vs IT. This is really about Texas vs the rest of college football/college sports. And that's what I want the focus of OTF to be about. We appreciate everyone who has joined OTF. We're doing our best to bring you news whether it's via video/podcast or the website and I think we're doing it in a way that is best for all involved. It won't be for everyone and we get that. I just appreciate the folks who have given us a chance and who continue to support what we're trying to do. Thanks, Bobby7 points
