There is nothing wrong with the "best season opener ever" promo from Fox. Defending National Champions vs. the team they beat in the semi-final featuring the most hyped college QB in a decade or more fits that description. Great teams typically lose a ton of players to the NFL, so the finding their "identity" knock is dumb. Two clear blue blood programs ranked in the preseason top 5 to kick off Week 1 at 11am. The excitement level nationally is legit and the TV ratings will be through the roof. It is the best season opener ever. We've been waiting two decades for this shit, some of y'all need to embrace the arrogance and attention again.26 points

It's not an issue of "wholesome." First off, Daily Wire is producing propaganda for kids. It might be some truly dangerous psyop shit. This is one of the most insidious features of your team. The educated world does not "indoctrinate" kids, it exposes them to ideas. Your ideas are repugnant, so they require indoctrination. Sesame Street was specifically designed to provide the kind of engagement that privileged kids got in preschool for disadvantaged kids. In other words, free preschool at home for poor kids. And yes, now Sesame Street is a moneymaker, just like the Muppets and I'm sure various other "franchises" created under the auspices of CPB. They in all likelihood would never have existed without a) funding from CPB and PBS and b) airing by PBS stations. Private funding would have been obsessed with whether they could sell enough ads for Count Chocula in their time slot.24 points

Percentage depletion has no relation to operating costs. It is a perk granted by the Federal government to allow non integrated oil and gas companies (E&P and Royalty holders) to completely shelter 100% of their taxable income related to oil and gas activities. I have been associated with a number of E&P companies, and none of them ever paid a penny in Federal Income tax (no matter what oil prices were). The only income based taxes they ever paid were a small amount of certain state Franchise taxes and Oklahoma State income tax (yay Oklahoma). Please name one other industry that has been granted this level of subsidy by the Federal government. besides religion of course, and please donβt tell me that religion isnβt a for profit industry17 points

I wonder how many of the confused people in this thread who think public broadcasting (a purposefully non-profit enterprise) was funded for the same reason specific for-profit industries are subsidized (to help them get established so they can then become net providers of jobs, tax revenue, and general economic benefit down the road) think that the oil and gas industry should also be shut off from any subsidies. They're pretty established at this point, don't you think? Shouldn't we all agree that after decades of being pumped full of our tax dollars, they've had enough time to determine if there is a "real market demand for what they're doing"? For those keeping track, public broadcasting receives about $535 million per year in federal funding. In contrast, the oil and gas industry receives over $15 billion in direct federal subsidies (in addition to billions more from states), and implicit subsidies are estimated to be well over $750 billion annually. I assume the response from someone who defends these oil and gas subsidies would come in some variant of "it's much more nuanced than that", and I would agree. The same is true for public broadcasting, which has never been funded for the same reason we subsidize specific industries at the state and federal level. One might argue that we need the oil and gas industry to survive, that it's a defense issue as much as anything. That's a reasonable argument. But one could argue the same thing about public broadcasting. There is no greater threat to our democracy than a poorly educated, disengaged population. There is a particular group of people working hard to ensure that this very thing comes to pass, however, and if one's head isn't entirely up one's ass, the reason for this is abundantly clear. Based on the numbers alone, anyone who will defend the subsidies for industries such as oil and gas, which are perfectly capable of running a massive profit with no assistance from the federal or state governments, should kindly shut the fuck up about the pittance that goes to public broadcasting. I mean, those of us who enjoy fossil fuel-based products can surely just pay more to make up for the loss of billions in free money that industry receives, right? We can tackle the insurance industry next, if you'd like (hint: it's in the trillions annually and makes oil and gas look like child's play). You say you want to make significant cuts to federal spending that mean something and reduce waste? You say that for-profit enterprises should be able to survive in the market without government assistance? Most people, regardless of their political affiliation, would likely be in favor of these things. I've identified two industries in this post alone that would put trillions back in our collective pockets if they were forced to operate as truly capitalist enterprises. There are plenty more. But that's not what this is about, is it? It's time to stop hiding behind the complete bulllshit that this has anything to do with reducing spending. The party of fiscal responsibility no longer exists, if it ever did, and everyone who isn't a bumbling fool knows it. The OBBBA passing alone should be all the evidence a functioning brain needs to understand this. Stop playing fiscally responsible dress up and just admit you enjoy authoritarianism and crushing your perceived enemies under your boot heel. Why pretend otherwise? To help you sleep at night? Tough shit. Twenty-two percent of this country voted for this, and every last one of them should be held accountable for it, even those who have already come to regret their choice. The real blame, of course, lies in the hands of those who didn't vote at all and allowed such a small percentage of our population to destroy what has taken 250 years to build. We can't get that mad at the fools for acting foolish. It's the disengaged who are truly to blame, and now that we are getting rid of public broadcasting and getting rid of public education, there will be so many more disengaged Americans in the future to assist in the power grab. Congrats, I suppose, but if there ever was a Pyrrhic victory, this is it.16 points

Its likely not going to be, but thats terrific marketing and sign me up for it. In reality, its game one with a lot of new players and a bunch of stuff changing. I think its going to be awesome, but teams don't even have their identity game one with the kind of veteran turnover both of these teams have had. Brand new identities need to be forged and this will make a lasting impression on who these teams eventually become. I hope it's a one sided ass kicking where Texas runs Ohio State out of their own stadium, just like Michigan.13 points

Yes thread got sidetracked by a troll. So much amazing content that never would have happened without CPB NPR: Car Talk This American Life I Built This All Things Considered Fresh Air Marketplace The Moth Radio Hour Wait Waitβ¦ Donβt Tell Me! PBS: Frontline Nova American Experience Washington Week Antiques Roadshow And of course without CPB the Ken Burns documentaries never get made; for all his flaws and the valid criticisms of his films, they are the richest, most in depth portraits of our country and its people that have ever been put in such an accessible format nothing like this going forward will be created and that is a shameful stain on our government and us for voting them in13 points

I'm thankful for Mack Brown, but I'm not his biggest fan. He's just not my kind of guy. But I will say he is very effective in these kinds of moments, and I'm very appreciative of him sharing this story. I was, however, a HUGE fan of Cedric Benson. I remember watching him play for Midland Lee, particularly in the state championships. I didn't see all three, but I saw two of them. Remember that during their entire history Midland Lee had always been overshadowed by Odessa Permian. But Midland Lee was a powerhouse for Benson's 3 years on varsity, and Benson was a huge reason for it. We all remember Benson as this big hulking back, but he wasn't that at all at Midland. I don't want to say he was skinny, but he was certainly lean. I don't think he ever got above 195 lbs. while playing varsity. Especially as a sophomore. He was deceptive in everything he did. He didn't look like he had a lot of wiggle. He never looked like Barry Sanders or Bijan Robinson. And yet, defenders could never seem to get a clean shot at him. He could make people miss in the hole as well as any running back I ever saw. He never had breakaway speed, but he often seemed to run just fast enough to score. He had the most incredible forward body lean I've ever seen in a running back. I felt like he lost a little bit of that as he bulked up, but maybe that was an optical illusion. He definitely had it as a freshman at Texas when he was still a little leaner compared to how he looked later on. But in high school his torso looked like it was literally parallel with the ground as he ran. And he always went forward. He showed that too, at Texas, but in high school it was even more remarkable. I cannot tell you how often it looked like the defense had him tackled, and he'd somehow squirt through with that forward lean of his, and somehow make 5, 6, 7, 8 yards out of the carry. Sometimes more. It wasn't just once. He seemed to do that every time he carried the ball. And he saved his biggest moments for the big time. He scored 5 touchdowns in each of those 3 state championships (13 runs and 2 passes). I loved watching Benson play in high school. One of my favorite players I ever got to see. I wanted to pull my hair out with his recruitment. He wanted to go to Texas. Everyone knew he wanted to go to Texas. But Mack Brown didn't like his measurables. At a time when Texas was often offering kids earlier than anyone else, he wouldn't extend an offer to the most celebrated back in the state, even with a lot of alumni pressure to do so. Mack just didn't feel like Benson was good enough. It wasn't like Mack offered him right before signing day or anything. I believe Benson came to a camp to prove himself, even though he was a little indignant that was necessary. Finally Mack Brown reluctantly offered the guy that summer, bowing to pressure and the knowledge if he didn't offer him and Benson went on to be a star somewhere else there would be hell to pay. Benson immediately accepted. Then he gets to campus and Mack Brown does his usual deal of not playing freshman. He often did the same thing. I remember pulling my hair out with Derrick Johnson when he got the same treatment. The famous 2001 game against OU Cedric Benson didn't get a single carry. We had Ivan Williams as our starting running back. It's the only game that season where he didn't have a carry. The next week against Oklahoma State he ran the ball 31 times for 131 yards (he'd run for 100 yards or more in the next 4 games, too) before finishing with his first of 4 1000 yard seasons. I'm not saying Cedric Benson was the greatest human being on Earth. I didn't know the guy personally. I know there were issues there. But he loved Texas, and he was a gamer. That guy could smell the end zone, just like Ricky Williams could. I'm glad I got to watch him both in high school and at Texas. I'm grateful he's a Longhorn.12 points

What should be a way bigger part of this whole Epstein story is the scale of the trafficking ring and the extensive, sustained, and continuing coverup. I just scrolled my phone's newsfeed and nothing about Epstein for the top 50 stories. Just looked at CNN.com and not a damn thing about Epstein that I saw. The story has died for now even though Maxwell was just this Friday transferred to the country club detention facility. And, hahahaha, we all seem to be largely pinning our hopes on MAGA, QAnon dipshits staying pissed off about this. The free press is dead. Consolidation, right wing bullshit, control of media by the new mega billionaire class, the end of outlets like daily newspapers with nothing taking their place is what brought us here. The president's involvement in a child fucking sex trafficking ring used to would've been a story with some legs. It's estimated that there were as many as 1000 victims. Not a single living man has had any sort of criminal consequences. The one woman that was ever held to account now sits in the softest detention facility imaginable awaiting a likely pardon or commutation against the wishes of the victims. I know they've successfully flooded the zone with other outrages but I can't help but think about how different this would've been in the past. These are such bizarre times. Again, adjust your expectations downward, evermore past what you imagine to be the bottom of the abyss, you sweet summer children of the ledge.12 points

It's truly fascinating to watch. "We must find these secret powerful rich pedophiles who were involved with Epstein!" "What about your cult leader, who was best friends with him for about 15 years, is in a million pictures with him, spoke glowingly of him, allegedly got a hand job from a 13 year-old at this place, famously has zero morals, clearly has a thing for underage girls including his own daughter, and was President when Epstein was killed errrrr I mean when he committed suicide." OTF (Vogel): Practice Nuggets from Saturday Evening Wanted to follow up from my late night post regarding the Texas defense and its performance Saturday. I posted, the first text I received regarding the Longhorns' defensive performance had my source enamored by the forecast of the defense in 2025. For those that missed it, this was the text: βThe defense is going to be unbelievable.β But to more notes. *** If you have not read @Bobby Burton post from this morning, be sure to check it out. There are great tidbits regarding the Longhorns' third practice in there. *** Starting with the defense. I mentioned coming into camp I expect the defense to be the superior side of the football early in fall camp, and so far that has held firm. This is not to create concern regarding the offense, the unit just needs time to gel across the board. New faces and pieces coming in and out of the starting unit who have yet to see extended snaps with one another is just part of the growing process. But for now, in large part due to creating turnovers, the defense is winning the 11-on-11 battles pretty handedly. *** The pads come on this week, and based off a couple of recurring conversations, this week is going to be huge for the offensive line picture. I don't believe the unit generated as push displacement as hoped in the spring and so far it remains a work in progress. To be blunt, this is my largest concern at the moment regarding the 2025 team. The experience difference in the trenches is where the differential lies currently. Cole Hutson has seen most of the snaps at right guard with Connor Robertson filling in at center as DJ Campbell remains limited. Originally I had heard Campbell may miss time, but that does not appear to be the case as reported by others here at OTF. *** CB Warren Roberson has really come along. Roberson had two interceptions on Saturday, with one mentioned as the most athletic play of the day. LB Liona Lefau has been mentioned as uber consistent in his play both in run and pass support. Freshman TE Emaree Winston had a remarkable leaping reception on a corner route which was heavily contested by Jordon Johnson-Rubell during 1-on-1's. Some positive returns on Derek Williams Jr. as well. I have heard he's been ramping up his intensity each day physically. Conditioning is a large key of his full return and those steps are being taken. *** Wide receiver position is working on who else can join the group of four β Wingo, Moore, Livingstone, Mosley. Again, I am going to sound like a broken record, but Parker Livingstone remains a name that is popping up in these settings. *** Texas has incorporated more under center snaps for Arch Manning than what we were previously accustomed to with Quinn Ewers. My expectation is to see a lot of play action involving Arch's back fully turned to the defense at times this fall. RPO's will remain a piece of the puzzle for the Longhorn offense, but true boot legs, waggles and seven-step drops out of a play action set are expected to increase compared to 2024. For those wondering, I have been told Manning has done a fine job of protecting the football, despite the Texas defense creating a number of turnovers (specifically interceptions) early on in camp.11 points

It will take Texas three or four years to get accustomed to the brutal SEC grind. Who knows how long it will take them to compete for a conference championship. Yup. And it is not unreasonable to predict that other countries will stop investing in United States bonds and equities and/or the US dollar once they realize Trump sits on his shitter at night and decides what all the job and inflation numbers will be. The combination of constantly threatening J Pow - and now essentially trying to create a path to falsify economic data that the Fed will utilize to govern US financial policy, Iβm pretty sure the money people in other countries who of necessity must have accurate empirical data in order to form their own competent financial policy will goβ¦ Eventually, investing in the United States with Trump as president (with a bunch of people acting as guard rails, preventing him from doing his stupid, worst instincts) will now be analyzed as investing in an unstable country with an unstable president who pulls tariff numbers out of his ass, has no idea how trade networks work, and more importantly who has no guard rails from continuing his five-year-old petulant child, who is dumber than shit demanding that everything goes his way. I had dinner with my ex longtime law partner Friday - and after I finished bitching about everybody seeming to bend the knee to that dip shit - she reminded me that as POTUS he is the most powerful individual in the world, coupled with a childish, vindictive personality and a substandard intelligence. She said we were living in the twilight zone episode, β itβs a good lifeβ. Billy Mummy played a six-year-old kid with psychic powers who had either destroyed the world, or moved his small town someplace else in the universe. He had unlimited powers and could read minds, and everybody had to 100% toady to the six year-old - or he would cause them unimaginable harm. Why? Because he was incredibly powerful. Worse, he was immature, cruel, had zero empathy for other people, insisted on always being right, and would punish or destroy anyone who did not disagree with his every whim or opinion. Fuck!! She is right. A perfect analogy.9 points

Embrace it? I never let it go. I always felt that's a part of what made us unique. We're arrogant regardless of on field results. I just wish it was going to be a prime time game. Oh wait. No I don't. I don't care. I'm happy the Ohio State meth tweakers are so upset about it. I hope we hear more about it after we soundly beat them the same way we did to Alabama in Tuscaloosa and Michigan in Ann Arbor.
