  1. It’s clear Burton/Hamilton/IT knew it was Jackson almost two weeks ago (Hooks would seem the apparent source), but Jax beating the Chargers derailed the timeline. Plus, there was always the chance Pederson could have found a way to change Jackson’s mind, so you can never dig your heels in 100% until the ink is dry and the guy is on his way. That Chip wrote an β€œarticle” on the search, focusing mainly on Adam Henry… that came out literally minutes before news broke that Jackson told Pederson he was leaving for Texas… shows FCB had no insight into the search, and likely only learned the name β€œChris Jackson” from IT’s reporting. He was completely out of the loop, and as we all kept waiting for news, with no Jackson hiring even after the Jags season ended, the Wikipedia cut and paste of Henry’s career was a Hail Mary to make him look good in case the Jackson hire didn’t happen. But like his haircut, the news did not make Ol’ Chip look good.

  4. Regarding Roberson, I am betting Gerry would have preferred to not say shit about him coming in to visit, but the high schools have way too much college coach and reporter traffic going through them right now for that shit to not get out between now and then. Carrington is the guy making the push to ASU. Regarding overall secondary outlook, things look good in terms of roster development and retention. Roberson is just too good not to go after once his sentiments towards Texas changed. Williams is a head hunter, Roberson is a better candidate for coverage. Would be great to have both of them. Allen has gotten big, so this will be a big spring in terms of seeing if he's going to get looks at safety and make the most of them. While the CB signee is exciting, Texas is pretty loaded at CB. Watts, Holmes, and Brooks are all going to get starter's minutes irrespective of who the actual 2 starters are, and they're apparently fine with that. Muhammad and the others from 2022 are going to have to get in where they fit in. Other '23 stuff - -Hill's question mark is coverage, since he hasn't had to show as much of that. He's the best downhill LB in the last few classes, which is helpful for Texas, but if we're talking high performing, high draft pick type, we're going to find out he can really cover too. -Vasek is expected to push for starter's minutes at one of the outside spots as an early enrollee. I'm skeptical, but passing it on. -The move to the SEC played a big role for this class, and of course will for those in the future, and more than the 2022 class, as figured, but it wasn't a trivial impact. -ATM's 2022 season is evidence of what happens in recruiting when you have NIL and nothing else. You can still land some guys that are all about the NIL but building high quality depth is going to be tough for non-contenders. NIL is first and second on recruits' and their handlers' minds, but development and relationships are essential to the mix for most guys. We know this, but the example maybe puts it in sharper relief. -North Carolina's combo of their 2021 season and being flatfooted on NIL combined to show off a 28th ranked class after UNC had been spending time in the top 10 in prior classes. I give Mack one more season. -Make of this what you will, but even though Bama's class was #1 on paper, some folks don't feel like they've signed the true difference makers in the past two classes that they're normally signing. Those guys are going elsewhere, slowly but surely. Nick Saban is 71 and even while feasting off the blood of small, nubile children can't delay the inevitable. Recruits in this next cycle will be talking to a guy who will be 75 their true junior season. Go look at what happened with Bowden when he hit his 70's and he had neighbors competing for and winning national titles. They started picking his pocket bit by little bit.

And not this Briscoe, the County in Texas that was named after the amazing Bruce Campbell show (they added the "e" and went back in time and changed the name so they could pretend otherwise). This Briscoe, whose parents are probably disappointed that he didn't turn out like the TV show or the county. https://www.kxan.com/news/texas/tornadoes-suck-texas-lawmakers-law-office-destroyed/ Religious nuts keep telling us how everything happens for a reason. And how people should pull themselves up by their bootstraps instead of relying on the government. Thoughts and Prayers and all of that.

  18. Just to circle back on the forecast for this season, the only way Texas lands a top 5 class in this cycle is with strong NIL and a 10+ win season. The interior DL, LB, secondary, TB, TE and OL positions are weaker than normal in-state. Texas is going to have to win, stay a buzzy-team as a result, and land most of their key in-state guys while getting a lot of key help, again, from SEC country and the west coast. The edge guy from Georgia that visited really likes Texas. Good luck with it though. Cruz should be a top 50 guy. He's severely underrated at the moment. After that, Uini could be awesome, but he's a project. Ory Williams is fine. They're going to work to land some of the big OOS guys but can't ignore Texas guys. Is Hudson going to get timed at camps? His overall speed is a question mark and he may be overrated. He's a pure NIL recruit. Texas is behind at WR because Marion quit and didn't tell anyone for a while and the new guy coming is starting flatfooted. That's a position of strength in the state, so hopefully there's enough talent to catch up and get whoever they want. Umeozulu hasn't filled out the way you'd hope. Should be interesting to see how hard the push is here. That said, similar concerns were voiced about Vasek this time last year. Teams with no buzz in the 2024 cycle? Texas ATM. Not sure about anyone else.

  20. lots of cool new stuff... just like they did with neptune, jwst turned its near infrared cameras on jupiter to generate this image. you can make out its faint rings and auroras at its poles. the white dot at the left edge of the rings is one of its moons and only 20 km in diameter...pretty wild to resolve that. brighter white dot to the left of the image is a 150 km diameter moon. here are some resolved clouds on saturn's moon titan. some higher resolution, zoomed in shots in infrared of the hydrogen jets and outflows from new star formations in the carina nebula. here is an image of the debris disk resulting from a red dwarf star. the star is 32 light years away yet they resolved these images which are about 60 astronomical units wide (1 astronomical unit is distance from sun to earth). so this is looking at a diameter about the same as the distance between the sun and jupiter from 32 light years away. this is insane. the blue image is at a wavelength where finer dust particles scatter the light and and the orange image is larger material. here's a look at the heart of the phantom galaxy comparing the famous hst optical images with the jwst (along with a composite). amazing how much more shit is there than we can see (right click to check out full size).

  29. For the strategic position, the one like Patterson's, it's likely to be a significant college offensive-oriented name between jobs. A guy like Dan Mullen is an example, although I don't think it's Dan Mullen and am not hinting that way. Have no clue who it could be, really, but heard that much. The job that Fenner took is a bit overrated by us dorks, apparently. It's kind of a handler of the handlers role and keeping up appearances with the high school coaches of import. It's not a nothing role, but Gilbert wasn't a key reason Texas landed guys in DFW versus other places. Had someone rave to me about Jackson today since recruiting "no longer matters" and he's reputed to be both excellent in teaching technique and keeping the WR room's head on straight. I said he'd be a terrible hire, but I'll evolve my view and hope for the best. Still think Henry was a better choice. The third guy Hooks recommended may well have been ... Hooks. Holmon Wiggins lost his room at Bama this year and will be fired once the new OC comes in, supposedly, and that was a problem for him with UT when considering guys for WR coach. Samples is also viewed as another guy who is going to be more friend than boss with a room of divas. Worthy, Mitchell, and Cook are all high, high level stereotypical divas. Cook is basically Ricky Jerret, which I find funny.

  30. The single most important factor in winning an armor engagement is whether you are the attacking force or the defending force. If you are the defending force, you can pick your location. If you are a tank you find a hull down position in some depression where you can fire and be relatively protected. Same goes for the Bradleys, except they are so much smaller they can hide in the forest or a stand of trees so long as there is a clear path for the tow missile to reach its target. Going back to World War II tank battles in Europe, when German panzers we’re on the attack in unknown territory in France and later in the Ardennes, many of them got brewed up by Sherman and 76 mm tank destroyers. Sure their cannons were less effective than the Germans. But the Germans didn’t know where we were and got the shit beat out of them by Shermanβ€˜s hitting them from a very close distance in the front, or hitting them in the side and rear, where they were more vulnerable. Similarly, when the allies were advancing the entrenched Germans blew up lots of Shermans from really good, well distance sighted positions. It has been a while (if ever with leopards) since we had leopard or Abrams vs. T 72, 80 90, etc. Russian tanks, and certainly the armor characteristics are really important too. Can a tank survive a first or second hit? Despite the Shermans doing a yeoman like effort versus better armored and cannoned German tanks, a first hit from a German 88 would destroy a Sherman - and from a rather distant location as well. Far better to let the Russians advance and attack and Ukraine defend than the other way around. Ukraine needs to wreck a shit ton of Russian stuff defending the invasion, and then immediately go into a counter attack while the other side is disorganized and dispirited and lacking supplies. A well trained crew is just as important as a good Cannon and good armor. I doubt the new Russian tankers will even be allowed to fire that much practice ammo. If we train them right, advantage Ukraine. I wish I was rich enough to find an old Sherman tank like the one my father used to blow up German tanks in the Bulge and the Rhineland. If we had some of those in a shed we could put some TOWs on it and go hunting for T 72s and BMP-3s.

  34. If there is a year to play Alabama in Tuscaloosa under Nick Saban not called 2007, 2023 is it. Seriously, folks should go look at what they're losing and what they return. The transfer portal didn't go the way they hoped it would, either. We'll what they land in the May 1-15 period, but the rest of the college football world has already sent them a dead guy in the elevator with the words "Ho Ho Ho. Now I have a machine gun too." written in blood on his sweatshirt for them to recognize. On offense, they lose 3 starting OL, Bryce Young, Gibbs, and Latu. Milroe isn't an answer at QB and Simpson didn't have a great fall from folks who would know. They tried to lure Drake Maye with $4M in NIL of which they didn't even have a quarter of that raised. Speculatively, they'd conveyed the same Bryce Young corporate treatment would be there but couldn't guarantee it. For one, you can't have a guy in the Heisman House who didn't win a Heisman if you're Nissan. Their WRs don't scare anyone. Burton isn't a witch. McLellan is fine but he's not Gibbs. On defense, they lost 8 starters and other key backups. They lost 3 DL including Will Anderson. They lost To'oTo'o and Moody at LB. They lost 4 of their 5 starters in the seconday including Branch, a projected 1st rounder. They do return Dallas Turner, who had a shit season, and McKinstry, both of whom are projected 1st rounders after next season, fwiw. I know and get it, "Alabama replaces tons of guys every year and doesn't miss a beat." That's true until it isn't. The guys they're reloading with this year have less experience and less hype than any group before them. Also, they've rarely lost the vast (64%) majority of their starters in a single cycle.

  38. I’ll play along. We just had a similar kind of odd situation. We are selling our house here in Oklahoma, we live in a small town on the northwest side of Oklahoma City. Houses don’t pop up for sale much, when they do they sell pretty fast. We had 5 acres, 30’x60’ shop, pool, everything a man could want. Problem was my neighbor and I don’t get along at all, he’s a cunt. None the less we list our house on a Friday, by the next Friday we have two offers. One is $1,000 over ask the other is $5,000 over ask. I took the lesser of the two. My reasoning. The one that was higher is best friends with my neighbor who I can’t stand. The way I look at it, fuck him. He’s not going to get to enjoy everything I built. My friends say I’m being an asshole. What say y’all?
