I had to go look up which Pink Floyd star was the psychotic dipshit asshole to make sure I can be happy about this.

(It's Roger Waters.)

He's a fucking loon.

Didn’t he mention a while back that he couldn’t get Gilmour on the channel? Can’t wait

He recently referred to that in one of his live feeds.

"I'm not going to say that didn't help," he said.

I really enjoy the little “shorts” that he posts  on YouTube and Instagram. Nice absorbable tidbits if you don’t have time to watch the full interview. For example, had no idea the band left and the engineer had to create the guitar solo himself in the final mix.

I like to think I have pretty good timing, and I can't for the life of me spot a "rushed" part of that guitar solo.

I mean, it's a guitar solo.  They're usually a mess.  That one is cleaner than most.  Can someone point out where he rushes?

Rick interviews Adam Duritz. August and Everything After came out when I was 14.  I loved it then and I still love it.

Rick is a pretty good interviewer.  He lets his guests talk.

In general I think Duritz is a putz, but that first CC record is fantastic.  I've seen them live a few times and he just can't be bothered to stick to the melodies.  Drives me crazy.

I didn’t know much about Pat Travers other than my brother loved him, a few of his hits, and a fellow musician friend of mine played guitar for him for a couple of tours a few years back.

Good interview so far, seems like a good guy.

This is really cool.  I’m not saying it will change their lives for sure, but it’s possible if the right people hear it.

That first drummer, Emma Harner and Cecil Alexander are talent.

Don't know if this has been already discussed, but Fil at Wings of Pegasus has a good channel in the spirit of RB, but from a more "technical" and performative perspective.  Below is an interview of Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie!).

OK, that's fascinating.  He talks about his 3-mic technique but I always thought it was for stereo.  It wasn't.  He miced (equidistant) up high over the snare, off to the left looking in over the floor tom at the snare but had both overheads panned CENTER.  He also had the 3rd mic (kick drum) panned center.

He's recording Led Zeppelin, steals one of the drum overhead mics to record a Jimmy Page acoustic track which he panned off to one side, put the mic BACK on the drums but forgot to pan it back to center.  Bonham plays, and Johns likes what he hears.  Moment of brilliance:  "hey, what if I pan that other 'center' mic to the left?" and voila!  the 3-mic STEREO drum technique is born.

I love this shit.

Well, let's not act as if there aren't an infinite number of ways to mic a kit, none of which don't benefit from a better drummer.  His technique does a very good job of balancing room + individual drum sounds w/o chewing up a bunch of tracks or suffering from phase issues.

It does, and I quite like it, but it's super susceptible to balance. Like way more than almost any other method. You can't balance it like a spaced pair + tom mics.

His book is great BTW if you haven't read it.

I've been on an XY or ORTF kick lately myself.

If you have a fig-8 mic, try Mid-Side out in front of the kit.  It can paint an astonishingly accurate picture of what's going on.

I had a mid side setup last year for a bit but it I found the XY did better in my space coupled with a front of kit mic (Royer 121). The drums are in the corner of a very big room, 75 by 50 with 25 foot ceiling, and I think the way the reverb in the room sets up it fucks with the mid side a bit. The FOK aimed at the kit seems better for this space at any rate.

I do like M/S in general though

Yes, my live room was way smaller, essentially 22 x 24 with a corner carved out for a control room.  I'm poor.  I did however use that Royer 121 for the fig-8 mic.
