Spotted at Sprouts in the Houston area.  Two items of note - Paper tag expired a couple months ago and always amazed by the amount of rear tire rubber on the ground in a Lambo.

Anyone have experience with McLarens?   570 vs 720.

Do you want a 911 competitor or a supercar? That's pretty much what you're asking.

I've spent some time in both, and the 720 (and 750) feels significantly different than the 570. They offer more "wow factor", for lack of a better term. The exterior and interior of the 720 have more detail and thought put into them. It presents as a product that more thought was put into the design, rather than the 570, which other than the doors, feels like most other cars.

For either one, you'll want to figure out where the closest dealer is and assume you'll be bringing the car to them frequently. Your other option for service is to check this guy's schedule and get on it: https://www.mcmedics.com/

I just spent yesterday at COTA in a 750S, and it's an impressive car. The August heat only allowed for one hot lap at a time, and the 750S next to us puked out coolant after it's first session, so you can't expect the reliability of a Porsche. However, if you're goal is to own something you don't see every day, that works great on regular roads, and has an insane performance envelope, it's an option to consider.

The Ferrari 458 broke my mind when it came out.  The 488 and its derivatives are still my dream cars.  I'm not so hot on Lambos, although I'd take one if you wanted to give it to me, or if I could play football.
In other breaking news, on Wednesday I spent just under $25K on a new Mazda, so I think I have a ways to go on the financial front before I should be posting in this thread.
What did you pay for which new Mazda? Need to buy my kid a car and used prices are dumb

Something like $24.6K on a Mazda3 sedan.  No complaints at all so far.  It's a lot more restrained than most of the cars in that price range (including the Mazda3 hatchback along with the usuals like the Civic, Corolla and Jetta).

GR Corolla or just a Corolla with a body kit? The GR Corolla looks like a blast to drive. 300 HP out of a 3 cyl turbo with a manual and AWD. A kid in my neighborhood has one and it sounds killer. I don’t know if he’s got aftermarket exhaust or stock, but it sounds like an LS and a 3 rotor rotary had a baby.

Is a 3-banger as smooth as an inline 6?  This seems like something @jimmyjazz could answer on the theoretical basis.

I think a flat 6 is the most inherently balanced of all configurations, but it's been a few years decades since kinematics & dynamics.  Is an "inline 6" the same thing?

Well, depends on definition of "flat."  If you mean horizontally opposed or boxer, that is less than perfect, but inline is the most inherently balanced.  Looking it up myself, rotating-plane balance on a 3 is off, while reciprocating balance is perfect.  Also, the power strokes don't overlap, which is a power-delivery issue I suppose more than a vibratory one.  But that also can devolve into a torsional imbalance that's made worse by the length of the inline 6 crank.

It appears that a horizontally opposed six would be quite well balanced if the engine used "fork and blade" rods so that each pair of opposing cylinders shared a common centerline, but in reality, most times the rods are paired next to each other, necessitating some longitudinal spacing of the opposing cylinders.

Well, all I remember is that some variation of a 6 was deemed "best" out of the box.  Trust me, I'm not really a dynamics guy (although acoustics & vibrations are adjacent, and those fields I DO know a thing or two about).

Yeah, I figured you might be able to thumbnail vibration analyze the things.  But there's a lot going on there beyond the masses of the pistons just slinging around.
