Killeen is worse than Waco easily.  Belton is tame compared to both.

palabra.  However, if I ever need to visit a Korean restaurant and pawn shop on the same block, it's nice to know Killeen has 43 options.

There's Korean food in killeen? Is it good?

New recruits typically get sent to Korea for their first rotation. They get wifed then return to Ft Hood.

At least thats how it was 30 years ago.

A long, long time ago I waited tables at a nice steakhouse. We had an Air Force base in town. One night I got a 20-ish person retirement party. All Air Force brothas. Every. Single. One. Had an Asian wife/girlfriend that spoke limited English.

Everyone was paying separate, so I’m having to around and ask who is with who and so on. I get to the fourth or fifth lady and she says to me “the black guy”. I had to collect myself because every guy at the table was black. So I tried to diplomatically narrow down my choices for her date. After several unsuccessful trjes, this very frustrated Asian lady with a very thick accent yells incredibly loud “CHOCOLATE THUNDAA!!”. One head snaps around and she points and says “dat one”.

Don't forget at least one tattoo parlor and a strip club also on the same street.

Every base (AFB, Navy, Army post, and Marine Base or R depot) in America has at least one secondary gate that leads to one of these streets. And they are for the most part listed as off limits (yeah right) to duty personnel.

C'mon man ! The food is as good as their nail parlors. 😝

While I'm not a huge fan of it, some of the best Kimchi I ever had was a from an NCO's wife whose hubby was stationed at Hood.

That is a funny ass story ( and so true). If in state, No doubt you grew up or went to school in saaaaaay,... Abilene, San Angelo, or maybe Wichita Falls (Dyess, Goodfellow, Sheppard)?

Early 80's, every Friday at the Dyess NCO club was Mongolian beef night during happy hr. The Club was full of all the admin brotha's and their significant Asian + 1's,  or just the wives by themselves 🤷‍♂️ .

Probably been covered, but what happened to Trudy's? Real estate speculation? I used to live across the street from their front door and it was always busy, still a prime location, and still closed, tagged, neglected and fenced off for a while now.

At the end of 2017, three buildings in Austin were taller than 450 feet. Now there are nineteen such structures. I hear a lot of griping about this from people who say it was way better then.

Of course, this was the predicted and desired outcome of the Save our Springs groups getting what they wanted, which was to concentrate people in downtown Austin so as to preserve aquifer recharge zones. But I swear that some of the same friends who 30 years ago were saying "Vote to Save Our Springs!" are now complaining because downtown got too crowded. I look at them and say "that's what we said we wanted back then."

Of course, it has the benefit of also giving Austin a vibrant downtown scene, unlike most other major cities in Texas. I just read an article about how lame downtown Dallas is because everybody leaves to drive home in the suburbs.

Downtown Austin is amazing now compared to what it was 10 years ago, let alone when I moved here in the 80s.

I love downtown Austin now. So much to do. It's really stark when you visit the DT wasteland of Houston.

It's just because it's Dallas.

Austin has turned the corner into having a downtown that feels like every other downtown in every other major American city (at least those with a vibrant downtown). I think it's a good thing, even if we lost a bit of the city's soul. I agree with the sentiment that it is better to have folks crammed into towers downtown than spread out in suburban slow-death camps like Houston and Dallas. The only issue is that the vast majority of the downtown residential spaces sit empty. Look at any of those residential towers at night, and you will not see much activity at all. There are certainly more people living down there now than there were twenty years ago, but most of the downtown activity is driven by the massive increase in tourism, not residents.

I would love to see us get to a point where downtown living is affordable enough for regular Austinites to live and work in large numbers. That should be the focus over trying to cram lot line to lot line, cheaply built tris and quads on small lots away from the city center that only serve to make current neighborhoods unlivable due to congestion. And for those who bitch about how crowded it is downtown, it is still one of the easier downtowns to drive to and park in America, for a city of this size or larger. 20-25 minutes from just about any neighborhood, and you're parked and walking down the street within five minutes of getting there. It's as easy as it could possibly be, short of a functional public transit system, which won't be happening in any of our lifetimes.

Who are these condos for?

Families with small children?

Retirees?

Young tech bros?

Where will the growth come from? It will be a long time, if ever, where Texas families would rather raise their kids in a high rise vs a home with a yard.

From what I’ve seen walking downtown, they are for very attractive women in their 20s with no jobs who benefit from the largesse of middle-aged men. Sugar daddies, actual daddy, stuff like that. But they are all wearing yoga pants and walking their cockapoo at 1:00 in the afternoon.

Brisket nailed it, as far as the current occupants. Like most downtowns, it's not going to appeal to families but to young professionals and couples without kids. It will still need to be more affordable to ever work, though.

As of late 2025 the occupancy rate for condos in Austin is 93%. Not great, but far from empty.

My kids have tons of high school friends who live in downtown condos. Families might not be their number one demographic but there are lots who like that lifestyle. I lived on Barton Springs Rd for a few years during my kids formative years. Having Zilker Park a short walk away was as fun for them as the backyard we had later.

I'm sure you know this, but an absentee owner (most of the condos in downtown Austin) counts towards the occupancy rate. The only thing that counts towards vacancies is properties available for lease or sale that aren't currently occupied. Those condos are empty as fuck.

I seriously doubt there is a significant percentage of units with families, but sugar babies get pregnant too I suppose.

I assume these high school kids go to private school as well? I don’t believe downtown Austin is on the radar for many young/new middle class families.

Affordable downtown is a fairy tale.

Austin has built over 100,000 new apartments since covid, the majority of which are not downtown. It is a better use of resources to support these areas with much higher working and middle class density. Roads, parks, schools and infrastructure would benefit those who need it the most.

The truth is the nicer you make downtown the more expensive the real estate will become and more incentivized the developers will be to build them that way. No one is suggesting building section 8 high rises on Rainy St or downtown. These limited resources spent downtown will be disproportionately beneficial to the Austin upper class who can afford to live there.
