The TT message board has a convo about Tech joining the SEC.

Spoiler

Talked with a friend after we saw the new SEC clip that mentioned Tech. We couldn't remember all the rumors and what was said by officials and Big 10 wanted to add 2 more teams. We heard that a&m may be going to Big10 because a Big 10 official said, "they are getting their foot into Texas by 2026." And a&m isn't happy that UT is in SEC. And when rumors were circulating, people were asking if they do leave, who will replace them. 2 different SEC members mentioned they would like to add Tech?

Can anyone share what was said and what are the rumors to refresh our memory about a&m/Tech & Big 10/SEC.

None of that is happening

I love the assumption that, of course, if TAMU went to the B1G, the SEC would invite them. No discussion of ratings (they do realize their stadium may be too small), no thought that the SEC may not want to offer a hand up to an unaccomplished program on the plains that is difficult to get to, brings no TV eyeballs and has a booster willing to fund NIL beyond what all but a couple of SEC teams can do.

Also hilarious that aggy would ditch the SEC, which has been their sole identity for 13 years now.  The last team to voluntarily leave the SEC was 1965 (Tulane). Georgia Tech also did (1963) and Sewanee de-emphasized varsity sports and left the conference (1940)

Really, what’s great is the total lack of understanding that maintaining a relationship requires both parties to get something out of it. That they never pause to discuss what would be in it for the SEC goes a long way to explain how the B12 felt about Texas, and why they say Texas betrayed them by leaving.

Any fan of a current Big 12 school who wants to get into the SEC or Big 10 at this point is an idiot.  From an actual fan perspective.  Of course every single athletic administrator would fall all over themselves at the chance.

The Big 12 schools (and most ACC ones) should be focusing their efforts less on getting invited into those leagues and more about coalescing as a product that stays included on the field in major college football.  You'll never get the payday, but if you get to stay part of the mix, it's as good as you can do.

The factors required for inclusion in those leagues going forward are fixed and in the past.  You can't win your way in, you can't buy your way in.  If you didn't start building your brand 50 years ago, or have been grandfathered in, it's over.  There's no room for new money in that tree fort.

Tech has struggled in the Big 12 for the better part of the last 15 years.  They'd fare worse in the SEC.  They'd be fucking miserable.  They could do the chant though.

I’m not as concerned anymore because if Prestige Worldwide breaks off it’s either going to be 20-24 in which case OSU has no chance, or 48-64 in which case OSU is going to be included. I still think the most likely scenario is that BIG/SEC go to unequal revenue sharing so Rutgers and Miss St get to stick around but their payouts are more like the XII/ACC. No more windfall by association. So conferences stay the same and there’s no significant monetary incentive for a mid program to move to SEC or BIG. Last I saw only the BIG is hung up on 4-4-2-2-1-3 so the playoff will either stay the same or be 5-11.

I understand why we try to be competitive with the ACC by maximizing cash inflow even if there is no hope of getting to the SEC/B1G level, but as a fan I really don't give a shit about it.

Here's BU home schedules for 2025-2027.

2025: Auburn, Samford, Arizona State, Kansas State, UCF, Utah, Houston

2026: PVA&M, SMU, Colorado, Texas Tech, TCU, Iowa State

2027: Incarnate Word, Oregon, Arizona, Oklahoma State, Cincinnati, West Virginia, UCF

2025 is 1 home game against a rival (UH is a meh rival currently but I'll count it and it should get better with time), 2026 is a good home schedule for BU, and 2027 features 1 home game against a Texas school and that is Incarnate Word. We aren't winning a MNC and those Auburn/Oregon games will be fun, but the fact that we can't play schools like Tech, TCU (only team on BU's schedule every year), SMU, UH, and oSu every year because we have to work in more Cincinnati, Arizona, and UCF is just the dumbest timeline shit.

On XM 84 today, they were covering the Big 10 Media Days and they played clips of Petitti's speech. It was insightful, particularly since he doesn't speak publicly much. They seem resolute on eventually getting their way. Someone should post the clip if they can find it.

Separately, on Finebaum today, he was talking with one of his regular reporters who covers CFB. I can't remember which, but they talked relatively extensively about the SEC position regarding the 8 versus 9 game schedules. They confirmed that ESPN has recently told Sankey and the SEC leadership that they'll pay them more money to put the 9th game on the schedule. It sounded as if the money would not be chump change and it would far outweigh the loss of an additional home game every other year for each team. I know we've discussed this previously, and articles have been posted on it, but it was good to hear that this hasn't cooled off from ESPN's end.

They both went on to agree that there is no longer a justifiable position from the SEC end to stay at 8 games after expansion. The momentum is with 9 games. Sankey wants 9 games, and said as much multiple times last week. Then Finebaum gave the ol'innuendo maneuver that "the most powerful programs within the conference want 9 games". He talked about brand damage being done actively right now to the league from all college media angles and the perceptions of other conference fanbases viewing the SEC as cowards. Then they talked about not being in the CFP finals the last two years, with Texas being their only hope last year and converting 4th and 13 to get to the semis. "The noise gets even louder if an SEC team isn't in the finals or winning it this coming January."

For Finebaum to be talking like this to his audience, he's been given guidance that he probably should be doing so. I know Texas is worried about the ever-present notion that they're heavy-handed with their partners, but the perception of being pussies, or weak, in the eyes of everyone else in the space is not something they're jazzed about having associated to their brand. Being considered weak or cowardly is untenable compared to being considered a meanie. Alabama is at least one of the other giants that is in the same boat. I don't think this gets solved for 2026, but I do think the 8 conference game argument is losing both credibility and momentum. The easiest path for that to disappear is for Sankey to come to the agreement with the Big 10 on whichever playoff set-up the Big 10 wants.

Scheduling in all of the major conferences is moronic and this dumbarse idea of no divisions is indefensible when you can see multiple fuckups with standings.

Split the conferences,  keep Baylor-Tecj-TCU and keep the conference title game.

My understanding is that the Big 10 would buckle on the 4-4-2-2 if the SEC would agree to play 9 games.
