Yeah, I don’t think he made any audibles now. Unless they signaled from the sideline or his radio was still on.

Sark has proven that he has the self awareness and the ability to reform is life, his physical fitness/weight, and his marriage…none of which is easy and all of which he’s done successfully.

I think we can be confident that a combination of him examining the issue along with a healthy and mobile QB that the play calling up and down the field and in the red zone will improve drastically.

This brings up an couple of observations.

First, I have very high level of confidence that with Arch and a top tier RB the offense is going to be way, way more productive and look very different.

I think that because I fully believe Sark altered his offense to compensate for/adjust to Ewers issues(injuries/style of play) or whatever you want to call it. (To prevent that rabbit hole)

It leads me to the quandary, that I'm pretty sure won't be answered for a very long time if ever.

Sark didn't play Arch much for a reason. I don't think he was just stupid, because he's not. I'm absolutely certain be knew giving Arch more snaps 10-15 a game, would greatly help the team next year. Yes part of it was to reduce controversy I'm sure, but there was something else going on. Like I said, I have some guesses and we won't know for a long while, if ever but it was a choice he made.

Well, we've reached a milestone of sorts. The posters on TexAgs are more sensible than many posters on Surly:

Funny to see the sips going after Sark and Ewers. Sark has put them on the map again in such a short time. Ags would kill for his success over the last two years.

Yes, Aggies have no idea what real success or championship aspirations look like.

Of course Aggy would kill for that kind of success. They aren’t in the business of winning so finishing almost is their greatest aspiration.

I think we have a failure of self scouting on our staff amongst whatever other issues there are.  There is no way our offense should bog down for extended periods of time against almost all non-shit opponents.  We are predictable.

As for the play, they knew it was coming.

To hear Downs tell it, the Buckeyes were ready for that toss sweep.

“You could see it on film,” Downs said. “They like that play when big moments come up.”

No sooner had Ewers received the snap than Downs made a beeline for Wisner. Downs pushed Wisner off course before Ransom cleaned up the tackle.

“They’ve done that throughout the year – crack tosses to the boundary,” Downs said. “I’m just happy that, when I missed the tackle, Lathan made it.”

So if we fake the toss and roll to the right with maybe one receiving option lined up on that side and a TE crossing (assuming Cam can hold a block) it's probably 6.

I wouldn’t bring a WR to that side.  You can have Juan drag across.  But really the QB should be enough.  At a minimum he ought to be able to get at or near the LOS.

A bootleg fake toss left, rolling back right Quinn walks in, tossed a gimme to Juan or whomever.

Any sort of action that fakes left and rolls right, easy TD.

There were 5 sacked 4 us on the left and the safeties bought early.

Coincidentally osu and Texas are the two wealthiest schools

Wealthiest in what ways?

  • Willingness of alumni and/or fans to legally use NIL?  Perhaps, but Oregon and others are in that game, too (already mentioned)
  • Willingness of alumni and adjacencies to skirt the rules to incentivize player?  Maybe, but Texas was not in that game.
  • Alumni wealth?  Perhaps, but there are others in this space.
  • School endowment.  tosu is not even in the top-20.  Vandy, Emory, and Cornell have larger endowments than tosu, for example.

I will concede I am picking nits and possibly being pedantic here, but MOST of the schools are financially separated from football programs and/or athletics departments, for the most part.  Especially the blue bloods.

The bottom line is Sark is probably a great play designer but Not a good game time play caller. Sure Sark can draw you up the best scheme, but he doesn't know the best one to call when the games on the line. The analogy is easy, similar to an architect he has great plans, but he needs a general contractor execute them.

You are indeed picking nits but I could’ve bee more specific.  Top 5 in nil. I looked at quite a few lists and basically us, Oregon , Ohio st , Tennessee , Miami , aggy and fsu.

so we’re not hurting for money.  We’re not Alabama who is doing a weekly bake sale for funds.  We also have passionate fans and a very stable athletic department with a very innovative guy leading it. Location doesn’t matter as much but if money is equal, I think a lot of kids will stay closer to home

in a nutshell, maybe Sark doesn’t have it so bad?

You will get the gist of my comment I hope. Did Sark make a Faustian bargain with QE and Arch. Keep QE with NIL and the promise of not sitting him to maximize his pro prospects. Keep Arch with NIL and the promise of starting in 2025. Unfortunately, the bargain severely damages our 2024 season and tries to fill inside straight in 2025. That is to say, will the 2025 team be able to support Arch to the extent the 2024 team could have?

Something very much along those lines is my supposition. I think there were likely outside factors that played in the mix as well as Sarks ego crossed with proclamation that Ewers was our starter prior to the season. Which was cart and which horse, I am sure I don't know. A mixed bag of influence, money and ego that I'm sure we're never going to know full details about.

But.. I think your idea likely is the primary factor.

I have the ultimate two remaining answers on the 1st and goal, one of which has already been proposed.

1. The Ravens showed us yesterday how to run the tush push, without possible harm to the QB.  Utilize a strong non-QB.  They use the TE.  Take the snap from center the old-fashonied way and tush push works, about 99% of the time.  I think I have seen it stopped once.

2. I remembered this morning Johnny Walker, RB for UT in the 80s, he flew over the pile, and this tactic was copied by Bo Jackson, among others.

If I remember correctly, Walker would line up in the I, run to the line, take the handoff from a QB taking the snap directly from center, plant both feet on or about the 2 yard line and fly over the pile at the goal line.  He was such a great flyer, he might have been able to take off from the 3, but I don't remember.

I just saw an article online and he was nicknamed "Sky" Walker.  I don't remember that, but he definitely flew over the goal line whenever needed.

Maybe we need to recruit a flyer, but we can afford to do this now that we have NIL.

So, we now have at least four ways to gain one yard of which we utilized 0 the other day, and all four require taking the snap directly from center:

1. QB sneak

2. fake FB dive, roll out, run pass option

3. Tush push-strong man not QB.

4. Fly over the goal line.

Is there any problem with teaching the QB and strong man to take the snap from center? serious question.

Agreed, we're basically "so close U" Texas rarely capitalizes on its big opportunities. It's very frustrating that this university seems refuse to flex it's muscles at times.

About the 1984 Cotton Bowl.  Both January 2025 and January 1984 have something in common.  We lost our star RB in both years.  In 1983 Edwin Simmons was the best freshman RB in the country.  Go back and look at his Texas-OU highlights.  Unbelievable speed hitting the hole, was going to run for probably 1300 yards easily.  Had knee injury, doctors somehow found out one of his legs was significantly shorter than the other and he was basically done.

Other thing in common, we had the best D in UT history in 1983 and this one ranks #2 or 3 imo.  The 1981 D was probably better than this one.  Harder hitting, but didn't have to defend much against the pass.

The question to ask is how long will we be in the wilderness?  January 1984 to 1990-shock the nation, only to be humiliated against Miami.  Then six more years to James Brown, "maybe we'll beat them by 21?" and then finally 8 or 9 more years.  I actually count beating Michigan in the 2005 Rose Bowl as being completely back to National prominence, as it laid the foundation for the 2006 game.  I strongly believe knowing the scene and all the things about the Rose Bowl helped the team immensely.

We are most definitely not going into the wilderness x number of years after this year.  We should be back, right away.

This is who Steve Sarkisian is. A very likable coach with two sides.

SIDE 1: Sark revived the UT football program and has racked up some big wins.

Won the Big 12 title going out the door. Excellent.

Epic beatdowns of OU. Fantastic.
49-0 in 2022
34-3 in 2024

Handled Aggy 17-7.
— Huge win no matter that it could have been a 31-0 shutout

Beat BAMA at Home in 2023.
-- SEC SEC SEC! Lulz.

Twice to the final four of playoffs
Two playoff wins this year.
-- Almost epic choke v. ASU, which leads to Side 2

SIDE 2: Sark coached perhaps the most EPIC losses in all of UT history.

2021: Blowing 18 point lead to OU with under 3 minutes left in 3Q.
2021: Losing to KU at home: 57-56.
2022: Vaunted offense stuffed by TCU on nighttime national TV.
— Could not score a TD against Sonny Fucking Dykes.

2024: Lost playoff v. Washington
— 4 shots to win from inside 15 yard line in final seconds. Not even close.

2025: Lost playoff to Ohio State
— 1st and goal disaster in the most epic collapse/ending of any big UT game. Ever!

The two worst 1st and Goal from the 1 yard line chokes in all UT history (at least since 1960s).
— 2023 v. OU
— 2025 v. Ohio State

Two CFP semifinal games .. ready to be won  … chances to play winnable title games.
Could not score with first downs from the 1 and inside red zone.

CONCLUSION:
Sark's won some big games. Sark finds ways to blow big games. In EPIC fashion.
That’s why the jury is still out on if he will win a title… even with Arch.
We simply do not know which Sark shows up in the biggest games.

Seriously man…those losses in ‘21 and ‘22 sucked donkey balls, but they were not by any stretch epic or historical. Winning any or all of them would have been great, but it wouldn’t have accelerated where we are now, nor did losing them hold us back in any way.

It's almost like some people don't realize that Ryan Day is on his third try at this.  Jim Harbaugh took three tries to win.  Smart and Dabo and yes Saban took 2.  In the CFP era, there are exactly two coaches who have won it all in their first trip to the playoffs.  Urban Meyer and LOL Ed Orgeron.  And other than Saban pretty much all of them who have gone have lost as much or more than they won it all.

Most of us realize that and are very happy with Sark. But the lingering issues holding us back right now are specifically Sark's territory. Game management, play calling, and an inconsistent offense with RZ issues.

Maybe Arch at QB helps. But ideally Sark recognizes and willingly addressing these issues starting this offseason.

Yea but he didn't win it and for that a semifinal loss and 4 losses to Michigan they were ready to run him up a pike a few weeks ago.  If Freeman joins the first-timers club Day goes right back on the delusional fan base freak-out watch on the 21st.

Oh I'm not arguing that Texas is less psychotic, just other rabid fan bases are equally psychotic and Day, is now playing in his second national championship. So.. Day 2, Sark 0

Also, I still haven't seen a single Surly poster suggesting Sark should be fired. Rather discussing the issues, cause this season had plenty, trying to figure out why, and hoping Sark makes changes.

He took over a stacked team that went 13-1.  Sark took over a team that went 7-3 and that had serious personnel issues.
