Couldn’t watch the game live yesterday. Had a conflict. Watching it this morning. For the third straight week, Sark has finally started mixing in short routes a few yards off the line of scrimmage, where they run slants against mtm coverage, or plant into an open space against zone coverage.

Why the hell he didn’t do this before is a mystery. Not only does this move the chains, it opens up intermediate and long passing routes, as well as the run game.

I stopped watching the Georgia game in the second half so I’m not sure what they did against them, but with these adjustments no defense in the country should be able to stop this offense. Too bad they blew the season before figuring it out.

The biggest question of the year is why they didn’t implement all these new offensive concepts and the OL unit we have now during the bye week before Florida when it was clear these changes needed to be made.

Just thinking off the top of my head the positions that need portal help are:

RB, WR, 3-4 interior OL types for G-C-G improvement, LB(maybe 2), S, CB, P, and K.

Baxter should be pushed to the portal, we may also need a TE unless young guys step up.

Sounds like a new offense basically

We needed to rest.

Which position groups do we need to bolster via the portal for next year to be his best roster? Feels like almost all of them

We'll need depth, but I feel like we'll be stacked enough other than O-line and WR (though Livingston, Mosely and (cough) Wingo are pretty stout if the youngsters come on) to actually earn a top pre-season ranking.

The main point is Arch has become what we thought he'd be -- better than Quinn -- and with that kind of talent leading a roster like ours we ought to wreck shop if our coach can stop stepping on his dick.

We’re going to be so inexperienced at safety, corner, OL, tight end, linebacker, kicker, punter,

True but everyone will have holes and we have as much talent in the wings as anyone. Arch should be the x factor.

Because the "big" win against SHSU almost made the OL look cohesive and competent?

This sounds familiar, like it was said all last off-season

I’d be bringing in a senior punter and kicker every year.

Maybe Hill leaves, but if his NFL projection is the current Dane Brugler reported Rnd 2-3 then I’d encourage him to come back.  Otherwise, you’ve got a senior Lefau and Junior TyAnthony playing 80% of the LB snaps, I.e., I’m not sure you need to add here.

If McDonald leaves (along with Taffe), maybe you bring in a safety but we’ve had lots of growing pains with Filsaime and Williams Jr to avoid having continuity issues here (I.e., if we need to add then it’s a failure of our coaching to develop).

Kind of the same thing at O-Line-good teams shouldn’t necessarily be replacing three starters every year but they should be replacing 1-2.

Not by me. I never thought Arch would be ready.

Strangely, as long as the O-line can improve, it's the D that might hamper us next year.

He’s still recovering from a devastating knee injury too, but agree he doesn’t show much power.

Never been impressed with him even before the injury. He’s never seemed quick enough to really be effective against good defenses. He just doesn’t make anyone miss even before the knee

It’s just the usual internet nerds reaching for straws as to why things didn’t go the way the pre-season hype predicted.

It’s never “we didn’t recruit well enough or manage the portal well enough”, or “we didn’t develop our players enough” or “maybe our coach isn’t a genius”.

Half this board sounds like Clayton Williams talking about Ann Richards:  “I hope she didn’t go back to drinking again”

Huh? Both can be true. The team was not ready for this season. That’s ultimately what matters to me.

But WHY?

Well…for the defenders…they are boxed in. Either he is so busy grinding down film as OC and expected everyone to delegate and deal with an OLine that was a problem last year it slipped his mind…or you know other “reasons” either way he didn’t do his job and it ain’t a hill worth dying on.

I like sark, I defended him for a while. The end of the 2nd quarter against a terrible arky defense with an explosive offense in year 5 is the last straw. Their punter gave you a TD. Young football team, some struggles with a chance to emphatically slam the mother fucking door and give yourself some breathing room. Sark took the FG. That’s why he will never beat day, smart, lanning etc. You have to practice those moments against shitty teams so you can execute them against good teams. He needs to move on. The undisciplined nature of his teams, the inability to evaluate talent (recruiting and portal misses) and the lack of game day awareness is too much to overcome. Lanning or freeman, Texas needs one of those guys.

  1. It's better to practice against our superior defense in practice, actually. Practice isn't the problem. You can't practice in the season to make your OL individually stronger.
  2. Shitty team? The score was close. There's only one game to judge an opponent by, and that's the game you're actually playing against them. Arkansas was in the game. Interestingly, kicking field goals had them within one point of us.
  3. I've seen Smart opt for fourth down tries in earlier games. It wasn't much of success until he played us. He almost lost the Tennessee game because he forgoed earlier scoring opportunites.

All year, I've seen teams try and fail and turn momentum over to the other team only to realize late in the game that three points might be pretty handy to have.

I think we will need to add 2 starters on the offensive line and a lock down corner. That probably takes up our entire budget. Don’t know about kickers but they are cheap. Linebacker and wide receiver maybe but they are a luxury at positions where we have invested a lot in high school recruits.

We probably also need to cull the roster a bit to free up money and improve the locker room dynamics.

Portal needs imo: 2-3 iOL, 1 CB, 1 S, 1 RB, 1 LB, K, P.

This year's WRs are young and inexperienced and missed ton of the offseason. Expect growth to fix that room.

Agree that Baxter needs a major paycut if he wants to stay. I like the guy but the injuries have taken a toll.

DBs are a tough call. How much is the roster and how much is coaching? Phillips and Littleton look like players at CB but still young. Safety is concerning if Jelani goes pro.

Watching yesterday without Hill reinforced the need for another experienced LB. Doesn't have to be a star but at least a solid rotation player.

Rolling with a True FR P and/or K would be malpractice.
