Actually, before the NIL era, Texas never won a single recruiting battle for a guy with his hand out. No Marcus DuPree, no Hart Lee Dykes, no Kevin Murray, no AD Peterson. Not a one.
Second- I expect ISU, OSU and BU to continue to recruit three stars and develop them. I then expect P2 conference schools to recruit them away through the portal.
If you’re TCU, KSU, ISU, BU or OSU, the ideal conference situation is one where revenue is shared equally, there are hard salary caps and there are penalties for transferring. That’s what they had a few years ago.
Now, there are no penalties for transferring, players may be legally paid  and there is no salary cap. The remainder B12 schools are about to find out what it’s like to be Bolton, trying to compete with Manchester United.

I can't imagine why anyone would think this model is alienating a huge number of college sports fans. Oh, right we're all just supposed to pick a blue blood to root for. Yeah, think I'll pass. What an idiotic sport.

A huge number? That’s the problem. There aren’t a huge number of OSU fans, not of TCU fans nor of Baylor fans. I g there were, they wouldn’t be worried about staying in the big leagues.
You’re an OSU fan? Where does your school recruit? Only Oklahoma, or in Texas, too?

What does your school do to earn its media revenue? Does it play the best no -conference schedule it can, even if it risks losses that can endanger bowl eligibility? Or does it make sure to schedule a FCS team, preferably as a week 1 tuneup?

Its called free-riding, and any strategy that depends on it is a weak strategy.

The Big 12 seems to be in good hands. Yormark seems pretty shrewd. Credit to Big 12 for hiring an elite business executive instead of another regarded career bureaucrat. He’s the right man for the job, but 20 years too late.

Pretty stunning first punch from the Big 12. Instead of allowing Stanford and Cal to shit all over Baylor for their religious beliefs / the conference’s shitty academics in the media, Yormark just cuts them out. Corner Schools, and they probably can get U Dub and Oregon out of sheer desperation.

Isn't the B12 adding those schools worse for Texas? where as a merger makes it a bit easier for UT/OU to get out?

Not necessarily.   There’s some things I’ve seen/heard from media types that have Big XII #’s coming in nearly double PAC’s.  That would be enticing to ACC folks to dissolve the conference.  Blowing everything up would basically get Ut/OU out faster.

Weird argument as Texas is one of very few schools that refuses to schedule FCS games and scheduling better noncons wouldn't help oSu in realignment.

No, it wouldn’t help OSU. That’s the point. It would help the conference, and increase the value of the total media contract, but at the expense of OSU. It would be the opposite of free-riding.

At this point, assuming Notre Dame stays put, I think the Pac stays intact at 10 and the Big 12 holds at 12.

Well their scheduling worked this year by giving us a 2nd NY6 bowl payout to distribute and a nice little feather in the cap of beating Notre Dame in it.

That’s awesome! You’re working the Snyder/KSU strategy perfectly! And it will leave you in the same place as KSU!

We’ll see. The PAC commish needs to land a respectable TV contract like yesterday. Allegedly the Arizona schools are giving the PAC 30 days to deliver a TV deal.

They got their offer late Friday and it hasn’t been public yet.  It’s ugly.  $28-32mm for all 3 tiers.  That’s 50% less than current Big XII tier 1&2.

new Big XII numbers supposedly being floated almost double that with the inclusion  of certain schools.  PAC is absolutely dead.  Go look at Stewie Mandel’s Twitter right now.  They all know the game is over.

I don’t think the PAC is even playing anymore. Like they don’t give a fuck about sports or winning.  My father used to say that not playing to win is like sleeping with your sister. Sure she's a great piece of tail, with a blouse full of goodies, but... it's just illegal. Then you get into that whole inbred thing. Kids with no teeth who do nothing but play the banjo... eat apple sauce through a straw... pork farm animals.

No. But that’s the point. Clemson was good enough to “sniff the titles” and make the CFP as an ACC team vs being a Pac 12 or Big 12 Team. This means that the Pac 12 & Big 12 don’t mean shit to the CFP and confirms that the Pac 12 & Big 12 have already been 2nd tier for a long time. Adding Clemson to the SEC is just for vanity and marketing purposes for the SEC now.

My point was more that Clemson doesn't add anything more to the SEC, except someone else to take recruits.  What do they get for throwing them a bone?   Seems unnecessary

This. Clemson doesn’t add new recruiting grounds or TV sets. The SEC would just be adding another good program.

The big 12 would have been insane to add any California schools. They don’t care about football. Like, at all.
Corner schools plus Washington and Oregon get them to 18. 9 team divisions?  The 6 from the old PAC 12 plus Tech, Ok State and BYU?  Then the other 9 in the other division. Play all your division plus one cross over game plus conference championship game?

3 divisions of 6 might be fun. Play 5 teams in your division then 3 schools from another division rotating every year. That plays everyone in the conference once every year. Then, with only 8 games if you wanted to get crazy you could schedule 1v 1 and 1v the strongest #2 in a flex game every year. The winner of those two games plays in the conference title game.  Everyone else  plays a flex team in week 9. You could have some serious fun with it- teams with higher records drafting opponents to play in the flex game- shit like that. That could be fun and keep the divisions closer and cut down on bad travel. But the point is they should absolutely add the corner schools and husky’s and ducks and that would be clearly the third best conference around, and could maintain a seat at the table. If you went to a 12 team playoff I’d expect that league to put a team in every year and two teams often.
maybe 4 SEC; 3 big 10, 2 big 12, 2 ACC and ND many years. Assuming the ACC doesn’t just get partitioned into the SEC and big 10, in which case I could see 5 SEC, 4 big 10, 2 big 12 and maybe one best of the rest being pretty common.

dammit.

I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that.

question for the gallery: why doesn't phil just create the nike network and pay domer $100m a year to join with the remnants of the pac?  part 2: move SDSU football permanently to SoFi, relabel the school Southland State University and build them an LA campus to support the Football Team?   If I were Phil, that's what I would do.  Otherwise it's duck season.

Fox and the Big 10 might have grossly overplayed their hand here. ESPN already has the ACC and SEC, if ESPN can help cause the remaining Pac to collapse and jump ship to the Big 12 and ESPN is able to swoop in for the Big 12 media rights ESPN would have completely flipped the Alliance on the Big 10 and Fox. The ACC needs to keep ND in their current semi joined state, the SEC wants to keep ND out of the Big 10, the Big 12 wants to keep ND independent so the Big 10 hold fast at 16 teams and the Big 12 can grab a homeless Oregon and Washington. At that point the Big 10 and fox are completely boxed in, the SEC throws some bones to the ACC and Big 12 with auto bids for the conference champs and use the deeper SEC to squash the Big 10 with unfavorable match ups. Have  the ACC, Big 12 and ND eating up playoff spots the SEC can then get 4 teams like Bama, Georgia, OU, or LSU/UT/UF/AU and stack that up against OSU, UM, PSU, USC, but then there is the big drop off to Iowa, Wisconsin, and Nebraska which just can’t  match the SEC in fire power.

Everybody keeps looking to ESPN to referee the chaos, and they haven’t stepped in yet. I think their preference is some kind of PAC - ACC merger so they’d control their Tier 1-3 rights and get a footprint on the West Coast. But if this what they want, they have to act now.

I think the Corner Schools want out. Oregon and U Dub foolishly think they can wait out the BIG invitation. Cal and Stanford just don’t care.

Not sure this is a serious post, but I’ll bite:

1. Uncle Phil is not running Nike as CEO anymore, and corporate is not going to give $100m to play who exactly?

2. You are proposing moving a California State University campus ~120 miles north in the center of 5 other campuses so they can rent SoFi, not to mention becoming a stand-alone school?

put down the crack pipe and step away from the keyboard

So basically the Big 12 poaches the 4 corner schools first, and then when UW and Oregon do not get the offer they want from the BIG or ACC, they follow and join the Big 12?  Maybe even Stanford as well will eventually be forced into the Big 12?  It will be interesting to see how the BIG or ACC reacts if/ when the Big 12 poaches the 4 corner schools.. Going to be a crazy month or 2..

The position of Oregon in all this is clarifying. Of all the schools in the current B12 and PAC, only OU has a better on-field resume, over the past 15 years, than the Ducks. And the Sooners’ record isn’t that much better. Yet, they aren’t attracting suitors? Why?

Because they bring a small fanbase and recruit their rivals’ territories.
Now, TCU, ISU, KSU, OSU…what is your strategic plan?
