Ancestry DNA sites for the win? Caught the Golden State Killer and a few others so far. I understand his attorneys requested to view the crime scene and are planning to mount a vigorous defense. I assume we will at least see the probable cause affidavit (even if it’s redacted?)

I dont know about that yet.  I could be wrong, but i dont think he has an ID attorney yet.  His parents said they dont have a lot of money.   His PA attorney was solely to represent him in the extradition part of the case and did not discuss the case with him.

(You can see on Twitter a couple of pictures of them photographing the outside of the home and entering it. I just sited the Fox Phoenix article but I can find more.)

“Investigators hired by Bryan Kohberger's defense team arrived Tuesday at the home where he's accused of fatally stabbing four University of Idaho students.

FOX News reported three men and two women arrived at the King Road house at about noon Eastern time and spent 45 minutes taking video inside and outside the property.”

No way he's using a pd in Moscow if he already has private investigators and a crime scene specialist, right?

Especially when he hasn't even appeared or been arraigned in idaho, yet.

Nevermind. Read he is being represented by a PD out of kootenai County.

I suspect the State will want to make sure he gets a legit PD with real experience, and some legit resources.  They don't want to hand him an "ineffective assistance of counsel" appellate point.

Yeah.... this chick is legit. Reached out to a couple lawyer buddies up here and they both said that's a good as he's going to get for free.

It sounds like I would like Kootenai County.

Coeur d'Alene is pretty and between Coeur d'Alene and Spokane I am sure there is plenty of stuff to do. I have a vacation home in Bonner County but it is pretty new so I can't really comment on the people. Most of my interactions are in a golf course community and on the ski mountain and those people are generally not locals.

I can't see him being tried in kootenai. I think they just appointed what they felt was the best PD in the area for the reason brisket said.

Thanks. I just scrolled up to see Brisket's post. I don't have much experience with the law unless you count posting on surly with Brisket Esq. et al.

I didn't mean it that way. It is a resort town so how many locals do you really see? And even the locals in the city are probably not representative of locals in the county and surrounding counties.

Word in Moscow is he's in the latah County jail

If he’s not there already he’ll be there soon…

I follow this guy and he was awesome on the gabby petito deal and he’s been in Moscow for most of the time since the murders. He has good stuff and is regularly on their news network.

So both stops were ordered by the FBI, apparently they wanted video of Kohberger. Vid of the first stop, you see a lot more of him. Cop asks them where they’re headed and Kohberger says “to get Thai food”, and but the dad says they’re on the way home to PA. Lulz.

Checked in.

Anyone think the Indiana cops were tipped off and tracking this guy? I doubt any of us have ever been pulled over for tailgating, and definitely not twice in 2 hrs.

Probably the easiest way to check off reasonable cause to pull him over

100%  no one white has been pulled over for tailgating in the history of the world.

Also kind of feels like his dad knows something is amiss. They talk way too much.

That is what I get out of it as well. So Dad flew to Idaho to drive back with the kid? Dad looks nervous.

Where did you see that? It does make sense though. When they said he was pulled over twice it sounded odd to me.  He was either the worst driver in the world or something else was up

Yeah.... fly out to drive home with your 19 year old daughter....ok.... your 28 year old grad student son?  Come on, man.

Edit to add.....

I'm not saying dad knew he stabbed 4 people to death.... just as a dad he could tell something was off and tried to be there for his kid.

The FBI was already aware he was their suspect before he embarked on the 2000 mile odyssey with his dad. I imagine they were nervous the whole time. Pulled over twice (once I think for following too close.) those were orchestrated stops. Check in on him. Check in on dad. Remember he’s their unsub. He’s just murdered four people with a Rambo style type knife. I can only imagine what they were thinking as he was driving all that way with his dad.

Many of the article said they’d been watching him for days. The stops weren’t unusual in the sense that they wanted eyes on him and dad. Some on Twitter also said to check for any scars/marks on his arms hands etc

I posted all the above to ask: If it is indeed true the FBI knew he was their guy: Did LE not have enough for a probable cause affidavit/arrest warrant to be issued BEFORE this 2000 mile odyssey? Or did the trip take them by surprise and they were on the fly? Because if they had enough to get one…one would think you’d not let your suspect drive cross country with a parental unit that could possibly fight extradition or have to be extradited?

I think the criminal minds type just kept tabs on him and knew he wasn't an immediate threat. Let him go home. Raid the house. Extradite.

I’d be curious if their profile (The FBI’s BAU) of the unsub will ever see the light of day. I know they created one…it was all over the news but they made the statement that they were not going to release it publicly. So maybe their profile said he’d not kill his parents? I think he intends to get off either with an insanity defense OR let’s face it multiple people the defense can point to for reasonable doubt. Something like his blood left on its own and also mixed with one or more of the victims would be indisputable. I wonder if he will try to claim he was sleeping with one of them to explain the DNA? I highly doubt he was but wondering…

Also a lot of people on Twitter are looking at some of his latest jailwear pics and thinking they see scars and scratches that have healed on both his lower arms. They are probably just reaching? Who knows? One of the scars on the left arm looks big enough to have left behind some blood at the scene if it happened during the attack.

Insanity defense is a shit defense. It's not what it's cracked up to be and most lawyers won't try that angle. Listen.... anyone that stabs 4 randos is clearly insane but it is a shit sentence. Basically gives the state the right to your life forever.

There is a lot to be figured out. But if one of the victims has his DNA under her fingernails,  it's over.

It's a crazy case. I figured barney fife would fuck it up,  but it seems they have played everything perfectly.  We will see.

Sounds like DNA has already been discovered https://abcnews.go.com/US/idaho-murders-suspect-identified-dna-genealogy-databases-police/story?id=96088596

Having the BAU work with you on a case is  a huge benefit. Not talking FBI just that unit. Their profilers and access to other things like media strategy and the like helped tremendously. That and just gold ole fashioned shoe leather. Getting and going through I am sure thousands of hours of camera stuff/CCTV and all that from cameras all over Moscow. We know he left some DNA behind because he was located bc of ancestry DNA. What that is (blood skin fluids) and how they will try to explain it away…who knows? Right now it looks like his public defender is launching a defense. So he’s not pleading guilty. That would be great btw with a confession. We won’t get that lucky. But maybe he wants to share what he’s done and be famous for it.

Bonner? Depends on where you are - if its ski/golf/water, probably a reasonable mix of folks... if not, you'll hear banjos. Lots and lots of banjos.

(Best friend grew up across the state line in Pend Oreille County and has a lake house there. The people at the lake are a pretty wide-ranging mix politically, which is nice, but drive a mile in any direction and you're an extra on a Squidbillies set.)

Yeah I agree, i posted up-thread that I have a lot of family in Sandpoint (retirees from Los Angeles).  Sandpoint is fine in the downtown....the Lake and Ski resort area are what you would expect, but get over near Clark, MT and the surrounding areas and its very remote.

We played Hidden Lakes back when it was a muni with a trailer for a clubhouse.  My buddy owns Idaho Pour Authority (great name for bar) in downtown SP and my cousin is a local musician.  I look forward to my annual trip up there.  Suprisingly, Delta now flies non-stop ATL to GEG, so that's been a big change as far as traveling up there from the Southeast.

There’s a huge mine (or mines) in that part of the state- silver I think is the big one. So take what you know about people that mine for a living, what you know about gold and silver rushes in the past that brought people to remote areas and what kind of people went, and then you’ll have an idea of the locals.

i suspect most of the people summoned for jury will arrive with a knife or gun in tow, offering to save everyone a lot of time.

Extradition is not that big of a trouble, lots of paperwork but no big deal. Maybe they were following him to learn more. Disposing of evidence, or a weapon, or see if the parent is involved and then flip the parent on state/federal charges

Insanity is not going to work in this case. Not even close.

One of the surviving roommates opened her door after she heard crying and saw a "figure clad in black clothing and a mask that covered the person's mouth and nose walking towards her."

  • The victims' roommate Dylan Mortensen  was awake at 4am when they believe Kohberger entered the house
  • She heard victim Goncalves say 'there's someone here'
  • Mortensen heard 'crying' and emerged from her room to see a 'figure clad in black clothing and a mask that covered the person's mouth and nose walking towards her'.
  • She watched him leave through a sliding door and locked herself in her bedroom

Among the claims in the documents is that his DNA was found on a knife sheath that was left next to one of the bodies.

The sheath was tan, leather, US Marines knife sheath that was found next to the corpse of Maddie Mogen, according to the documents.

Yep.  Outside of the coast the pnw ain’t that different than the south.  Heck I’ve heard parts of Idaho and Montana are more conservative and less tolerant because they don’t have the same exposure to minorities as the south has had
