Not all AI is bad.  Brought an online order back to Walmart to return.  Help desk lady gave me the 800 number and I called them right there.

Got a chat bot.  A bit to apologetic and syrupy but she got me fixed up real quick.  A+

I hope Nora will let off no end of her farts in my face so that I may know their smell also."

You’re not alone.

I had one leave dallas on the 8th, went to Chicago, St Louis, Chicago, KC suburb, KC suburb, spending days at each stop, and may still get here eventually.

KitchenAid refrigerator bit the dust on Christmas Day. We had gotten it in a house sale ten years ago. When we got it, it was already 10 years old, so it lasted 20 years overall. Solid.

Holy shit today’s fridges are crap. The quality and customer satisfaction ratings on all of them are terrible. I spent hours trying to find one that “might” be good enough. The construction quality is cheap. Terrible products.

Finally we gave up and bought a Whirlpool that was supposedly “good enough”. After three days, the ice dispenser has never worked, the temperature varies way too much, and everything on it feels like it will break if I touch it. This sucks. Taking it back today.

What price point are you looking at? The high end Korean brands aren't like this as much, but they are all teched out.

Sub-zero, FORNO etc.

If you are lamenting $700-$1200 fridges being toys then idk what to tell you.

That being said, IMHO, it's like asking a car manufacturer what percentage of your assemblers use pneumatic/ electric wrenches? Is it different than turning the nuts/ bolts by hand? Yeah. Is in inherently bad? no. Is the productivity increased? Massively. Hell, Santa at our house ain't doing shit without a cordless screwdriver any more.

Fintech is a pretty broad category, but it makes sense that they'd be going all in on the latest tech trends. That's how they groom themselves for PE buyouts, which is always the endgame.

And to be fair, most "coding" work isn't actually writing code. It's aligning with business partners to understand what is impactful for their operations, and crafting code to meet SLA at the lowest cost possible. Most of the time and effort isn't writing what's probably just a few hundred to thousand lines or code. It's making sure that the code that's written and services implemented will actually do something valuable for either the business or your customers.

I have seen loads of useless services built and quickly abandoned just so IT managers and promotion seekers can claim they're doing good work, when they're really just making busy as a pickme tactic

You'd love his employer. No layoffs in the history of the company. Still privately owned.

Yes, he develops code, as do others on his immediate team.

I am told they upped the efficiency requirements of refrigerators a few years back and "got ahead" of the natural technology advancements. Led to reliability problems.

Compliance requirements for those rule changes don't kick in until 2030, so I think it's just the manufacturers taking the opportunity to lower costs and blame duh gubmint for lower quality

Mid-range is likely the worst place to shop for fridges and appliances. Appliance guys I talk to say the same thing: Whirlpool or Frigidaire, no ice-maker or dispenser, top freezer. Simplest and will run for as long as the compressor will. I’m happy with the Frigidaire we have.

Interior plastics even on high-end models now are mostly shit.

The problem with the high-end brands is that I have a tight space due to kitchen configuration. But, I'm still looking at fridges from $2-5k, and they all still suck.

The higher end Samsung and LGs are all glass on the inside. You just pay for a lot of other shit you don't care about. I also think a lot of fridge stuff is what it is unless you get into specialty stuff like French doors etc.

You also shouldn't really shop them online. Go to Home Depot and Best Buy and go look at them.

We've bought our last 2 from Costco online so I'd suggest checking them before you buy, as well.

We went to Lowe's, HD, BB to narrow down to a couple of models we would be good with and then found the equivalent model at Costco.com for a little less, a longer warranty, free haulaway and delivery.

Caution, long answer in case it helps others looking for a fridge:

Thanks for all of the input. I am now much more knowledgeable on fridges than I was a week ago. Did a ton of research, and a few things I learned along the way:

Consumer Rports shows heavy customer disatisfaction and weak reliability for every brand, with Bosch being the least offensive. They didn’t test the luxury brands like sub zero. I ruled those out because I don’t want to spend $10k and the selection was too limited. Bosch required ordering and they didn’t have the style we need. Otherwise we would have bought Bosch 800 series.

We bought a Whirlpool that we thought would be good enough, but the ice dispenser wouldn’t work due to a poor design and manufacturability. But more concerning was that the temperature struggled to work well. We took it back and bought a GE fridge that had what we wanted and was the competitor to the Whirlpool.

The GE fridges have the highest consumer reports ratings, but also the lowest customer satisfaction ratings. Given our experience with other GE appliances, we are expecting problems. But if it goes south, I’ll have a plan C ready for ordering a better fridge.

The top, bottom fridges are more reliable because of their simplicity. We use a top freezer model for our garage fridge. Next most reliable are the side by sides because they don’t have multiple compressors and evaporators. We’ve had, and still wanted, a side by side because of space limits on open doors (damn kitchen island), and not liking freezer and ice on the bottom. French door types are the least reliable but most bought. And the most choices, by far.

As said earlier ice dispensers are a source of problems. However we use that function every day, multiple times per day, so we bought one with it anyway.

The Korean brands are controversial. Samsung and LG had serious quality issues as recently as a year ago, compressors and ice makers. However, theoretically they are improved. Repairmen still hate them. There are debates about why.

The fridge ratings are all gamed by social media marketing companies putting in fake ratings. So you need to adjust the ratings. A 4.0 rating implies a lot of problems. A 4.5+ rating might indicate a reasonably good fridge.

We looked at Costco but they didn’t have a type and model that would work for us. Ended up going with Lowe’s because we were able to buy it and have it delivered a day later. And every fridge was on sale. Saved quite a bit on the one we bought.

Summary of brands IMO

Bosch - pretty good quality, limited design options, longer deliver intervals. Not a bad choice if looking for a French door type. More expensive.

Whirlpool - heavy volume sales, basic fridges, some ok some not. We liked the one we bought if not for the quality issues.

GE - tested well but that bad customer sat has to come from somewhere. Probably will break prematurely.

Samsung - ice maker problems behind them supposedly. Felt a little more solid than GE, Whirlpool or Frigidaire. Some interesting features. More features for the price. If quality issues are improved and repairmen are biased, maybe not too bad. I know a few owners who are unhappy with theirs.

LG - same as Samsung except it was compressor issues. Almost bought an LG, if not for annoying ice door buttons.

Fridgidaire - didn’t look too closely primarily because their consumer reports ratings were generally lower across the board.

KitchenAid- overpriced for cosmetic features. It’s not the higher quality brand it used to be

GE Profile - a little nicer than GE, better ratings. Potentially decent choice but harder to find and order. If Lowe’s would have had the model we wanted we would have gone with it

Cafe - a GE upscale brand. Looked interesting but wasn’t able to touch one .

Other brands - there were others but they were too hard to find or there were too few choices, indicating low market share. We wanted a brand where parts and repair were straightforward.

One other the biggest surprises is that there aren’t really any great appliance stores in Austin anymore. We were interested in that to see a wider variety of lesser known models. But, since we couldn’t find a store we liked, we prioritized getting a fridge fast that we could touch over ordering one from one of the appliance stores where we weren’t able to touch the fridge.

The whole process sucked.

Different appliance, but we got the Bosch 800 dishwasher and it's from the future. The whole thing is "top rack" safe, which is extremely handy with a toddler going through a ton of plastic plates and utensils every day. Super quiet and even the plastic comes out of it DRY.

I am extremely impressed with Bosch, and would consider other major appliances from them

How hard is your water?

Houston public water with no water softener, we go through CLR like crazy keeping the shower heads unclogged. Probably getting a softener installed in the near/medium term future.

Honestly, just using the powder detergent instead of the puck (insert obligatory Technology Connections video on dishwashers) and putting in a pre-wash along with the main wash does a ton. Along with running the hot tap until hot comes out before starting the dishwasher, so the detergent is more effective

Good to know, thanks. Our water is hard AF as well, and that’s always my first question. Been looking at the 800’s for when I redo the kitchen a bit, so good to know.

I also need a water softener, but we’ll be moving in a few years so I haven’t fucked with it. New place will have a whole-house filter (well.)

I have a pre-technofication samsung french door fridge and it's had the icemaker replaced once, but other than that it's fine. It gets ice buildup I have to fix once a quarter or so or the freezer won't close all the way, but who gives a shit.

This has to be a corporate initiative designed to reduce the need for servers and increase revenue. We have it here in DFW too. They do an 18% service charge and you can choose to add more tip if you want. I haven't been back since November so I don't know if that's changed now. The quality of the Alamo experience has dropped off so much that we debate going there or just trying for an off-time at AMC.
