Requiring a candidate to align 100% with all of your opinions is just an excuse to not participate. Elections have always been about comparisons between candidates. I support much of what Biden is doing. There’s not a single thing today’s gop platform that I support. It’s easy these days to decide.

There’s no perfect candidate. No one person can unite every faction of their party and independents and crossover voters. They don’t exist. You pick the person who aligns with enough of your beliefs and priorities and push them to be better after they win. Biden did not excite progressives and then he signed a lot of very progressive legislation because he was pushed by the progressives after he won

It's clear to me that the reason why he's losing support in Michigan and elsewhere is: Biden's inability to make the standalone, Trump-less case for voters to vote for him. It's basic math, really. The number of voters who support Biden (a positive number) or oppose Trump (another positive number) is always going to be greater than the number of voters who oppose Trump (a positive number with a lot of overlap but not 100 percent overlap with the Biden supporters).

If you're upset at voters who refuse to do anything to support Biden, because they don't see the world the way you see it, I agree with you. But we're not in a position to change stupid. Stupidity is a given and has been with us since time immemorial and will remain with us until the heat death of the universe.

That's why I say it's not useful or productive to try and change that. You won't change that ever, and certainly not in a matter of months.

Once you accept that stupidity is an immutable truth about the electorate, you'll be in a better position to appreciate why I'd much rather focus on the things that could be changed in a few months: Biden's campaign strategy.

That means growing the number of people who support Biden. That means finding coherent, factual answers for why Biden deserves your vote (other than Trump Bad™)

Why would making a smart argument work on stupid?

I don't care why they vote, I only care that they vote.

That positive number we need to grow is decreased by the people who oppose Trump but don't support Biden enough to get out and vote, they need a reason to do vote for him and Trump Bad™ isn't enough of a reason otherwise they wouldn't be in that group.

So Biden better start providing those reasons, so we can get that number up. That's all I care about.

The thing about these people is that 95% of them will never vote for the Democratic Party, but need to come up with a new reason every 4 years.  2016 was Bernie, 2020 was Tara Reade, 2024 is Gaza.  These aren't lost votes, they’re just people that know who to bitch to in order to get attention. They get way too much attention for a group that is inconsequential.

the broad with the goofy tit job and coke problem?  I mean, I could be down to clown in D-town.

Yea this 6 term Senator, 2 time Vice President, and incumbent President better figure out how to fucking campaign. QUICK!

If you don't know that Trump being the opponent changes all the rules, you don't know much.

2020 was a very narrow margin and Biden had an advantage (a global pandemic that Trump mismanaged). Biden won't have that luxury in 2024.

Yes, I get it, those people suck. We can't change the fact that they suck. We can get Biden's team to maybe do and say more than the same things that haven't been effective.

That's an allusion to Trump, and it won't work as a sales pitch unfortunately.

AP projects a Trump win in South Carolina

Looks like somewhere between 650k and 800k for turnout.  2016 turn out 741k.  This is an open primary, meaning that non registered voters may participate.  In the past Dems had their's at the same time.  There are reports of Dems voting for Haley, as to how many, I have no idea.

What is up with Republicans and being gluttons for punishment and humiliation?

I swear, let's just offer a top of the line pickleball paddle and a night with an S&M escort (using whatever coded words are suitable to advertise that) for any registered Republican who votes for Biden. Then tell me that he doesn't win every state.

Oh don’t try to fucking tell me what I do and don’t know. I’ve pointed out his 40k margin plenty of times. I’ve seen the bedwetting all across the board for long enough between “he’s too old” “we should run someone new and abandon incumbency” to whatever shit for brain concerns are going on now. I’ve seen people without an ounce of irony think the Valley represents the entire  Hispanic vote in this state. It’s goddamn February and the asshole who made this thread that’s going to stay on the page for an entire year is the true enemy.

If you're gonna say Biden is some kind of campaign prodigy, I have a right to, uh, disagree with you there. He can't rest on his laurels. Too much is at stake.

He needs to be able to make the Trump-blind argument for why voters should get off their asses and vote Biden.

That would be political malpractice.

Nikki is staying in the race after tonight.

Trump is effectively the incumbent and is losing 40% of the GOP vote. The GOP should be scared at the lack of support that he’s receiving from their base. Will many of those 40% eventually vote for Trump in the general? Of course but not all.

A percentage of them staying home because they don’t wanna vote for Biden is just fantastic. What is chef’s kiss is if 5% of those 40% pull the lever for Biden - which creates a ten point swing between candidates for that number of voters.  Like having your two point conversion intercepted and run back the other way for two points.

in a close election, it could be huge.

At least some of that 40% tonight are not Republicans, nor will they vote Republican in the general.  At least some of that number will not vote at all with him at the top of the ticket.  Right now, with about 85% reporting, it looks like the total will be about 750k.  Considering all these factors, and that the population of South Carolina is a Republican net positive, these numbers aren't great, and by no means eye popping.  Even if only that 10% of that total fall into the category of not voting for Trump, it's good news for us.  While I wish the total turnout had been lower, it's not bad for us, though the media will spend the next few days touting how horrible this is for Biden.

Yeah, she’s got money backing her and the never-Trumpers behind her.

This is a Republican civil war.  Just look at Lara Trump saying she’d make the RNC focus solely on electing and defending Trump while the RNC’s acting executives are saying “fuck no, we are not dedicated to Trump’s legal problems and campaign”.

For every MAGA Republican in Congress deep-throating Trump, there’s hundreds or thousands of Republican politicians at state and local levels who need financial or other assistance (GOTV) from the RNC, and if the RNC becomes 100% focused on Trump, it affects their campaigns.  And in those smaller races, if Trump is dragging things down even a few points, it can cost them.

The GOP needs gutting. We used to have wild swings to the composition of Congress. The winning party used to be able to give its agenda a try. Considering the major issues facing us, Christofascism and Climate Change the foremost, maybe we should have a do something Congress this go 'round.

Election results by precinct (Trump=RED; Haley=GREEN)

I don't know South Carolina too well, but here's the coastal portion. What are the demographic differences between Myrtle Beach to the north (very Trumpy) and Hilton Head (more Haley)? Aren't they both resort/retirement destinations? What would make them vote so drastically different?

Myrtle is full Reds. Might even be 75% former Ohio natives at this point. Hilton Head is nicer. Charleston is the sweet spot, but I'd definitely live in Hilton Head, it's pretty close to Savannah

Thanks. I've only been to SC a couple of times, visiting Columbia and the Augusta/Aiken area for a work project.

Aiken isn't so great, but when I was last there Columbia is booming.  South Carolina itself has a lot potentially going for it, low cost of living, growing population, economic opportunity, etc.  Like lots of places politics are potentially holding it back in a big way, though that's nothing new.  The history in Charleston is amazing, as is the food.  Like anywhere, there is good and bad.  The low country has it's own unique culture, and its interesting.

So people that can convert another language into English, they're not called "Interpreters" or "Translators", but rather "Instructors"?  Said by a man who can barely speak his native tongue.  I mean, you honestly could spend 10 years in a room with nothing but a typewriter and a jar of LSD and you could not make this fucking shit up.

ENGLISH, MOTHERFUCKER!  DO YOU SPEAK IT?
