I assume you’re joking. This pick had zero to do with the trade. It was a Dallas pick not a Laker pick, and he traded to be a contender now, not to get a lottery pick.

c'mon, man

you *really* believe this is straight-up no fuckery at all?

Remember when Dan Gilbert was threatening the Miami Heat for tampering with LeBron, but then quietly backed down and got the #1 pick in The next draft? Total coincidence.

Also the Cavs getting the Ohio native LeBron in 03 seemed like just a happy coincidence that could make a small market team relevant, and create a nice narrative to write about for years to come.

Then getting the #1 pick again when LeBron makes his triumphant return to Cleveland? Well, it's just the way the balls drop.

It's a pattern, and people love to find patterns. Hard to not see it, maybe it's not rigged every year, but it sure feels like it is some of the time.

But then they approved a Paul trade to the Clippers all while fucking owning the franchise.

I remember the public backlash of Paul to Lakers being more universal across the country (especially with optics of NBA owning the Pelicans) than the recent Luka to Lakers deal. It sat there for a little while, then the NBA canceled it and turned around and sent him to the other LA franchise.

So how do you figure it played out?

"Okay, Nico, if you trade Luka to the Lakers, we'll gift wrap you the #1 pick. But you have to avoid the playoffs outright. Luckily, AD will probably get hurt in his first game as a Mav. If that's not enough to plummet down the standings, maybe Kyrie will suffer a season ending injury to be safe. Then we'll let you beat a shit team like, say, Sacramento in the play-in to not make it seem too obvious. But have your team totally quit in the 2nd play-in game. Got it?"

"Yes, sir, Mr. Silver."

A pattern without experimentation is fools gold. OMG I found so much gold turned out to iron but it's a conspiracy!

At the end of the day Cleveland parlayed those picks into Kyrie, Bennett and Wiggins. A HoF, the greatest bust of all time, and an extreme late blossom. It was all LeBron James playing GM that even gave them a shot at a miracle (down 3-1 to the warriors).

The idea that Cleveland would be happy losing LeBron even for 3 #1 is insane. They were just giga incompetent, I am kinda shocked that they are making noise in the East right now since a better org in Utah couldn't with Donovan Mitchel.

I assume it was more likely post-Luka trade and Mavericks landing in the lottery, when the black hats got together they decided to award #1 to Dallas.

That said they need to review the rules once again, the new system encourages more teams tanking, but if they elminate the lottery and do it like the NFL, would NBA teams still tank from the start of the season anyhow?

The whole reason they went to the lottery system was cause teams were tanking whole seasons.   At least now there is a chance even if you tank you get boned.

People who legitimately think that the NBA Draft is rigged are dumb. Straight up.

Yeah its fun to play in the conspiracy theories but there is no way other owners would sign off on the league choosing the team that gets the pick

I think they do show it? And they have unbiased reporters/journalists like Lowe there all the time that would never go along with a conspiracy.

The only way the lottery was rigged was making sure the Spurs didn't get the #1 pick they deserved

Deserved? For fucking what?  You idiots lucked into a injury season from Robinson that got you Duncan...then got handed Wemby, and got Cassell too and think you "deserved" Flagg?

Spurs for some reason be getting gifted shit like they the Lakers.

Lucking into great players is exactly how the “lottery” works. Thanks for the explanation. I’m sure @Huckleberry can explain probability and odds to those of you who still believe the system is rigged. Even after an explanation, WHY THE FUCK WOULD THE NBA RIG THE SYSTEM FOR THE SPURS? Please, offer unto me any explanation of why the Spurs were gifted the second pick in the draft by the magnanimous NBA who loves its small markets and champions them at every opportunity.

Zack Lowe said the final ball for the 1st pick had the spurs with the best odds with 3 numbers. The number came up 7 and that gave it to the mavs. The bulls had it with 6.

It is hilarious that the one time in 30 years the Mavs get lucky in the lottery everyone is sure it is rigged and needs to be blown up now.

Everyone has been sure it’s rigged for 30 years

Just nuke the lottery.  It has had zero effect on teams tanking season long and the worst teams stay bad when they don't get top picks, but no way to rig that.

The teams all voted for it. 29 to 1. They all wanted the chaos of every non-playoff team having some chance. The only nay vote was Presti in OKC, astutely arguing that practically the only way for a small market team to ever get a superstar is to draft him. So a team like Charlotte losing out to Dallas and San Antonio is absolutely devastating.

Didn’t Kobe say he’d never play in a small market. It’s been 25 years idk

Kobe wasn't even a Top 10 pick, don't think he got to dictate anything to anyone.

As long as the NBA continues to not determine draft order by record, there will be conspiracies. That a team who was a game away from making the real playoffs got #1 just looks suspicious

Especially for a league with a checkered history wrt the draft, trades and gambling problems With players and refs

SGA was drafted by the Clippers. There was a pick swap during the draft, the Hornets just had to make the pick for the Clips because the way the NBA tracks draft trades is incredibly stupid.

Kobes rights were also traded on draft day to the Lakers, so he wasn't exactly their target.  That team is just cursed to always fail forever and make the wrong decisions.

If the draft was determined by record, it would be an unmitigated shit show that not even Sam Hinkie could dream up. But yes, that would quell conspiracy theories. I almost want it to go to that for one year, just for the NBA to say, “you think tanking is bad now?”

I think he was their target.  Charlotte wanted Vlade
