It just doesn't seem fair that Manfred lets the Astros have a Hummel.

Fuck that poor bastard.  Astros should be irrelevant by now.

Went to the game tonight and sat up in the 400s with my kids and the poors. It felt like the temperature and humidity were both >85. I thought Daiken has the air conditioners?

Lucky to come away with a win though. Suarez was slinging it and has to be pissed he lost on one swing of a Hummel bat.

Pitching that well and then losing because of a Hummel homer is one hell of a nut punch.  He looked like a little leaguer who just hit his first home run running the bases.

Dangit you should have come down with us. I don't claim any sort of fame but Lucas and his spaceman persona would have loved it

It was my first $1 dog night in forever. I LOL'd at the chili and cheese upgrades...$3.19 each (chili or cheese) on a $1 hot dog. Gotta pay Christian Walker somehow.

Like Crane can afford to pay to AC the upper deck. The poors can suffer

I bet you had to buy several beverages--now Dana is confident he'll lock up some guys to extensions

At some point, you have to sign some of your players. There isn’t a Jeremy Pena waiting in the minor leagues this time unless you are a believer in Matthews.

He's a 2B

I think the Astros have no issue with signing their players.

The questions become will they be willing to pay whatever the market  price would be for Pena in two years when he is 30 and how many years would they be willing to offer to him?

Pena realizes his next contract is going to be his one big chance to cash in as he is making just over $4M this year and can go to arbitration twice before being a free agent in 2028.

Could they reach a number and a term that is favorable to each side?  Yes, but don't see it happening and this might be why there have been rumors Crane is considering a sale of the team.

"The Houston Astros and Jeremy Peña were reportedly in serious contract extension talks for a deal exceeding $105 million over 5 years. However, Peña recently switched agents to Scott Boras, and those negotiations are now on hold. The Astros had been discussing a deal with Peña, who is in the midst of a career year, before he hired Boras."

That would have been a nice contract for him, but I guess the appeal of hiring Boras and holding out for a 1 year 25m deal in 2027 is just too good to pass up.

Then take that money and sign free agent Kyle Tucker, trade Pena for more good prospects, sign another SS that bats 0.270 in his career that doesn't demand $30m/yr.

I actually believe this year’s version of Pena is closer to what you will get for some of the early years of his next contract. He has been on a multi year project to rebuild his swing and it’s all coming together.

The Astros have a lot of money coming off the books after this season (Abreu, Montero, Framber and Pressly).

With the state of the farm system, they can’t let Pena walk for nothing. When the Astros let all of the other free agents leave, there was always a replacement plan in place. At this point, they will need to sign free agents to keep this going.

I wouldn't be in a big hurry to extend Peña based on a huge one year outlier.

Like Springer he's also going to hit FA on the wrong side of 30.

Still pissed about Correa and Tucker though.

I was in a dive bar on Long Island when that happened. Those Yankee fans were pissed…

almost as pissed as the next day when Altuve hit a first pitch home run off Cortes (a game I was at…2nd time I missed a no-hitter/perfect game in another city involving the Astros by one day)

Eh- he’s been pretty lucky but I think he’s leveled up from a 4 win guy to a 6 win guy.
5/105 seems pretty steep but I’d do it. He’s looking at about 30 in his last 2 arb years so that’s 3/75 for his FA years. That’s generational wealth for him and if he’s still good at the end of that contract he could probably get another 5/100. If not he’s really rich and that’s guaranteed.

I'm really happy that Pena's having a good year after scuffling a bit, but he doesn't really fit the profile I'm looking for to extend unless it's really team friendly.  If I'm Brown/Crane, I don't care about the money as much as I do about capturing those peak seasons before age related decline hits.

That said, the Astros are doing a really piss poor job of locking up anyone before arbitration hits.

I would have extended both, too, which is why I grimace when I look at Correa's stats and see a player aging fast.

Correa was the perfect candidate for 10/100 while he was in the minors. Alas.

I remembered that game I was at ended with a judge walk off bomb off Seth Martinez (first earned runs he had given up all year), but just connected the dots that the first pitch of the game was an Altuve homer and last pitch was a Judge homer.

[Jayson] That was the first time an MVP and the MVP runner up from 5 years prior started and ended the same game with home runs (probably) [/Stark]

Astros going 2-2 in that series never having trailed or even been tied was pretty wild.
we got our revenge for not sweeping them when it mattered.
