100% -- and this time of year, that's huge.

We really need Duchene and Robertson to get going.

It would be nice if we can close things out Thursday because I think Vegas is dead-team-walking. There is a very good chance that series is over in five. Was watching NHL Live last night on NHL Channel and paid close attention to the Edmonton-Vegas breakdown. The Oilers are a much deeper team than last season, which is scary. They have like 59 points in 10 playoff games from players not named McDavid or Draisaitl. Last year, they had like 52 points in 25 playoff games from that group. Still don't know what to make of their goalie situation but Skinner was good enough to beat us last year -- and their skating group seems better than a year ago. Luckily we have HFA (I guess) if we can dust off the Jets.

The more I thought about it, the dumber it gets. Faux tough guy bullshit with a 2-goal lead and 5 mins left. This is the President’s Trophy winner, who has outplayed you in the game save the goalie spot. They pulled the goalie and scored twice to steal Game 7 in Round 1 just a week ago. If they can knock one in on the PP, it’s even more white-knuckle time for the final 2 mins. We all know how bad we are at empty-net goals. Next thing you know you’re in OT.

I was shocked Arniel didn't go 6-4 there to try to get one.   Fully expected it from the stands.  Have been too busy to go find if he was asked about it post-game.

I'm reading a lot of "Jets should have won" and "Stars got outplayed" and other such tropes. Did they, though? Seems to me they played exactly the type of game all season that leads to a win. Sustain the other teams' best effort, and then punch back and harder, faster, and in series. That's exactly what we did last night. The difference in the game is Dallas was 50% on the PP and WPG 0%. That an Otter being the better goalie. But I thought our 5v5 play was pretty damn even. Don't have time now to dig up the advanced metrics now but that was what my eyeballs saw

I thought we were pretty thoroughly outplayed the first half of the game, then we flipped the switch in the 2nd and played a lot better.   We easily could have been down a couple of goals if Otter wasn't on so all credit to him.   I did confirm advanced metrics said the same (slightly favored Jets).  Don't get me wrong, we didn't get dominated, but Jets have to feel shitty because they played a really good road game and still lost by 2.

I will not way the Jets "should have" won but I definitely think they were better than us last night -- except in goal, which is kind of a big deal. I haven't looked at the advanced metrics either but the first 40 mins appeared that the rink was tilted considerably in Winnipeg's favor. The Jets had 70 shot attempts and had 13-8 advantage in dangerous scoring chances or whatever it's called. But they have a goalie problem -- ours is playing much better than theirs. We were opportunistic and actually the one goal the Jets scored was a bad one.

Even though it was 1-1, I thought the Jets outplayed us until Granlund's goal late in the second. Seemed like we were on even footing, or slightly ahead from that point on. Then we got the double-minor early in the third, we take nearly four mins off the clock at 5-v-4 and then score with three seconds left on the second PP and it was 3-1.

Our goal scoring isn’t top line or top 2 line reliant, we win by having all lines being productive. They won’t all be scoring at the same time, and we are not rolling four distinct lines in the playoffs, but not having any one player or line being quiet isn’t killer.

Normally, it's not. That's this team's superpower. However, in this series, we've been very one-line dependent when it comes to scoring goals. Eight of the 11 we've scored in this series have been scored by Rantanen, Hintz and Granlund. Harley and Petrovic have goals from the blue-line and Wyatt has the long goal among other forwards against the Jets.

Harley's goal was scored with the Finnish Line on the ice. Petrovic's goal was scored with Rantanen-Steel-Robertson on the ice. Wyatt's goal was scored with Benn/Dadonov on the ice.

We live this life in the Central. We've played the odds-on favorites to win the Cup (the Avs), and now play the President's Trophy winners. These aren't jagoff teams glad to be here. Last season, the Stars fought through a suddenly reloaded Vegas team, then drew the Avs with all their top guys going.

It would be more comfortable to just roll over teams, but that ain't realistic. My nerves would be better if we could stop the shooting gallery on Otter, but so far he's holding up. You're going to need that to contend. Last night, the Jets knew this game was critical. Yes, they have 2 more games at home where they're tough, but Dallas already won there once. As such, they came out to play a ferocious tempo. They got nothing on the scoreboard, and watched Granlund toss one in from the middle of the zone.

Dallas played a counterattacking style - waiting for the Jets to get caught out. The Stars PK is so thorough that they can afford to wait for penalties to even out (though that's no reason to take dumb ones). Robo is almost completely back up to speed. Miro got the plastic wrap off. Rather than struggling, the Stars are powering up. Just keep in mind they're doing so against the top points team in the NHL, and are respecting that power.

Obviously I'd like to close it out on Thursday, but I'm expecting Hellebuyck to do his thing. The Stars can beat that thing, but he's definitely an equalizer when he's on. I know the rules are different than in the Hitchcock era, but there's still value in taking the air out of the game, and just believing that your squad's talent will carry the day when the variables are reduced.

I would imagine that if you were going to alter your philosophy when dressing 7 d men, this is the plan to alter it to.

I love everything that the Finns are doing.  But at what point do we get real concerned about the complete non-production from guys like Duchene, Marchment, and Dadanov?

But we need some contribution from Duchene and Marchment.  Really anything.

re: dadanov i like his play - the tight dance behind the goal - trickery with power - he's close to creating something i can feel it

I'm giving Jamie Benn a pass here.  He's old and slow.  He's in the last year of his contract, and he's primarily along for the ride.  If he can throw some hits and give you some tempo to give a spark, that's really all we need from him.  And Seguin still has some jump.  He scored a couple against the Avalanche.  As a third-liner, I think I'm fine with what he's bringing.

But we need some contribution from Duchene and Marchment.  Really anything.

Jamie could take a few less penalties and be doing 100% of what he needs to be doing. We don't rely on him for scoring anymore. We rely on him to set the tone and keep is lineups honest and the other side in check. Anything beyond that is gravy

exactly. it's not alarming that Robo or Duchene or Mush haven't "gotten going." That was by far Robo's best game since returning from injury and he had a point to show for it. Mush and Duchy looked better last night and the latter also got an assist. I think the fact that we've now returned two starters and this is the first time playing with our full lineup there's gonna be a few continuity issues, but luckily others are stepping up in the meantime. that's gonna pay dividends the further we go. we've outscored the Jets 11-5 in our three win (3.67-1.67avg). I like our chances to win one of the next three.

Benn joining in the scrum is one thing.  Benn trying to do a WWE move as he joins it was fucking retarded.   I hope this is his last short circuit of these playoffs but I fear he is due for at least 1 more.   Seguin's was a bit out of character for him but he has to be better, and better at scoring.

The first goal that Hellebuyck gave us was sawwwwwft.  I thought the Jets played slightly better overall but Otter, Granlund, and the first goal swung the game to Dallas

I'm on the fence on Benn penalty after looking at it closer again today.  Terrible timing, but Lindell got cross checked in the back and Benn needs to have his back there as captain.  It was a bit too much, but my initial reaction at the game was "how do you only send one off there" and I still feel that way now after watching replay several times. Particularly considering under 5 to go in the 3rd.   I feel like we watched these guys get pushed around some the last 2 playoffs and we are making a point it's not going to happen this year.  I saw someone else comment (and I agree) that at least by Benn stepping in he made sure Lindell didn't do something to get sent off (who we absolutely needed on the ice those 5 minutes), so to the extent Benn took that into account charging in then good for him LOL.

Playoff protocol dictates that you take Schiefle too after that fracas. He didn't really deserve it, but all that compounded with Mush keeping his cool a few minutes earlier under provocation would have made it an equitable decision.

penalties called were even for the game at three aside, with one of ours being a double minor. The difference in the game is the two we scored on the pp. inversely, why we didn't lose was being 100% on the pk. we have hovered just above 30% on the PP in the playoffs so far and held COL to a bit under 14% and so far have held WPG to a hair over 6% 😶 we have held our opponent to zero conversions in 7/11 games so far - 3/4 in the WPG series alone

Benn can get involved, sure, but IIRC he gave a pretty violent whack to the back of the head with his stick. It was just the wrong thing to do at the absolute worst time because of game conditions.

Robert Tiffin noted it is like the inverse of the WCF last year that we essentially lost on special teams (our power play went ice cold and Oil PP caught fire).

I don't think he hit anybody in the back of the head with this stick violently and Roope could've just as easily been sent off for throwing... The Captain went in and defended his guy after getting cross checked and seeing his team get punked physically for years.
