What is the actual definition of “par”? And how is it actually calculated?

I ask, because if the best players in the world cannot achieve “par” scores, then perhaps “par” is not being calculated correctly.

They’ve got the course redesign architect on Live From and he’s doing a hole by hole review of his design decisions. REALLY cool discussion if you’re into that stuff. He just finished the front 9 so you can still catch the back live but I’m sure they’ll replay this. Gil Hanse is his name

Conditions are good at the moment, so it's funny hearing the commentators in this Aberg/Hideki/Scott grouping keep saying "that ball's gone" but they end up holding on the green.

Seems like the greens are a good bit more receptive than they’d like them to be.

Will be interesting to see how fast things get this afternoon and tomorrow.

Bryson’s shot into the 2nd green for example. He left it short and it started to roll back down the hill but stopped. I think they were expecting those to roll the whole way back. It was also 7:30 am and the greens were still damp. There have been a number of shots like that that seemed to be right on the edge of turning into dropped shots.

Bryson just made a massive putt from the fringe to save bogey after making a mess of the rough. If that putt slipped by he’d have had a tough one for double.

Watching other guys I don't know how Spaun is 4 under. The greens especially are murder.

I guess if you hit some putts and don't make any mistakes that score is out there.

The greens were really receptive early this morning. There was definitely a window where you could make some birdies if you stayed out of the rough. That window appears to have been closed. At around 9:00 this morning there were 10-11 guys under par.

Bryson doesn’t have it.

He's left some strokes on the course today but didn't play himself out of it. Anything +2 or better is going to be a good score.

You know the players fear this course when Rose is in the rough 15 feet from the pin, he takes a full swing and pitches his ball 40 feet past the hole just to make sure he's out of the rough and on the green somewhere. Bogey is better than double bogey.

Makes double anyway. That first putt through the valley was really bad.

That bit of firmness since this morning has really brought out all of the little nuances in the greens. The margin for error is so much tighter now than it was this morning.

Dude was so lucky with his lies  in the rough/waste areas last year, no way that's happening in this rough.

He got really lucky on his front 9. Way left on one but it was so far left he ended up on top of the grass that was trampled down by the spectators. He left a chip short on 2 that would have rolled back down the slope a couple hours later. He had a pitch out of the rough that landed short and would have stayed in the rough more often than not but bounced it onto the green.

albie.  Haven't seen the clip yet.

so the most interesting thing on this is reading ESPN article says 4th time since US Open has been keeping records since 1983.  1983?  how the fuck could they not have records of scores on a hole before that?

Funny. Reed was pretty much in the same spot as Rose. He decides to play a cute shot out of the deep rought, stubs it 2 feet into the first cut, still not on green. He too will prob make double.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. This fucking course...

Edit: Nevermind, he made bogey. Justin just sucked at lag putting.

He was mainly just bad putting today. Tee to green he played very well.
