Other random and somewhat humorous OU stuff right now:

-OU is down to two OTs - Fasusi and some back-up transfer. They're claiming Simmons could be back soon, but also not explaining what his injury is and they're vague about the whole thing.

-The fans are arguing amongst themselves on several divisive threads and I am not sure which one is the most entertaining. They're flummoxed that USC and Riley are performing well after expecting Michigan to shred them. Numerous guys want Bedenbaugh gone while others are questioning the fandom of those posters doing so. On the Big 12 vs Venables quote thread, a mod has defended Venables' take and he's getting run over by his constituency.

-No one can understand what the fuck is going on with Ott not getting PT, but numerous posters are simply unwilling to believe that it could be a byproduct of Demarco Murray not being very good at his job.

-There is a growing consensus that Fatty Arbuckle sucks and they need Kevin Wilson's "uptempo offense" installed, with Wilson playing a bigger role on the staff. This is the same guy that was run off from Indiana after getting them to two consecutive bowl games and then only getting two seasons at Tulsa before being shitcanned there as well. Both places pushed him out because his team, his admins and the booster base all wound up hating him. He fits right in at OU, I guess.

-They have a decent-sized faction of fans who honestly believe that they would have won the game on Saturday had those meddling refs not ruined things for them. This same group is projecting a 5-3 SEC finish with a win at SCar and then a sweep of their home SEC games remaining, Ole Miss, Missouri and LSU.

-Another faction of posters is actively pleading for Venables to get shitcanned so "Nagy can get his guy" in there, with a return to top 10 national status being all but assured with that change.

I'm enjoying witnessing where things are heading for the sooners and their program.

They can't help themselves trying to run back the greatest hits. The game has evolved a great deal since 1999.

They keep wanting to go back to air-raid style offense to pair with BV defense. I'm all for it. If you look at PK defenses all the way back to Boise, he consistently shuts down the air raid or similar offenses.

And that shit won't fly in the SEC, which is a line of scrimmage league. They would need elite offensive talent. And I can't think of one elite offensive player they've had since Riley left. They're not going to money ball one in this environment.

Nailed it. Running the air raid was Ikard and Lehman’s brilliant idea to instantly fix the offense.

Just give up on running the ball. In the SEC. Haha, holy shit.

Or they could break Ott out of the doghouse. Nope. Completely changing the offense mid season is much easier

I don't think Ott is in the dog house, I think he just sucks. He was an anomaly for a season at Cal, but in reality he's just bad. He did almost have 1k in 2022, but otherwise he's bad to diarrhea. At least at ou, which makes it even better.

Think of John Harris and his 1k season for us. He miraculously got to 1k, but again, an anomaly.

He did hit 1300 in '23, but it's not working this year.  I don't know how much of it is his fault.

I don't think Ikard's plan is for the whole slate of offensive position coaches to go, but they've got to get on the same page.  Bedenbaugh doesn't want to coach his line to set the same way for every play (to accommodate the RPO), but that's what he's having to do right now.  That means no push in the run game, no blocking support by TEs that can't do it, and no space for the WRs to get clear because of the aforementioned.

The plan to abandon the run for this year is that he doesn't think you can re-install a package in the middle of the year that fixes the set issues, so you abandon the RPO and just use short passes in place of the run to backs who can catch a little.  You hope it pulls people up off of the deeper zones and then you get Mateer a little time with a slower rush and more space downfield.  You also hope it stops OLs from getting rolled up on, which has been the source of half of the OL injuries this year.

It would require a LOT of humility from the staff and you probably still need to get rid of JJF for not finding a single TE who can block worth a damn and Murray for not being able to identify, land, and develop a RB with any vision.

It's time for the Oklahoma Sooners to pull the plug on a longtime offensive assistant if they want to fix their rushing attack

By AJ Schulte  |  Last updated Oct 16, 2025

I'm normally hesitant to call for a coach to outright lose their job. It's a tough industry with plenty of variables that are completely out of the coach's control, and sometimes the results don't match with the process because of dozens of other factors affecting the game. I understand the nature of the industry and how difficult it is to sustain success. However, I've finally reached that point with one Oklahoma Sooners' offensive assistant coach, and one who has been here a long time.

I am, of course, referring to tight ends coach Joe Jon Finley. It's time to move on and find someone who can actually coach this position and find talent instead of the complete zero Oklahoma's tight end room has been.

At this point of the season, the Sooners can't do much to fix the woes of their However, if they want to fix it moving forward, this is the only move they have left to take. He has had enough of a leash.

Enough is Enough for Joe Jon Finley

I can't say for certain what goes on in the tight end room, I can only look at the film. What the film tells me is that the state of the Sooners' tight ends is in embarrassing sorts. There is a lack of fundamentals and talent To make matters worse, it's been a repeat problem for years.

Oklahoma's run game has mainly been attributed to the offensive line. After all, it's very easy for casual viewers to look at the run game struggling and say "Yeah it's the oline's fault" because they don't really understand blocking. And that's ok, it's a tricky thing to pick up live. Yet I can promise you, it's not the offensive line's fault. At least, mostly not.

The tight end room is completely unplayable. Even with Jaren Kanak's prowess as a receiver, the room is at best a zero on the field and at worst completely derailing Oklahoma's offense on a down-to-down basis.

It doesn't matter what Oklahoma offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle tries to run. Time and time again, the tight ends are whiffing the blocks or getting blocked right into the path of the runner. Texas steamrolled everyone in the room, shutting down any hopes the Sooners had of mustering anything on the ground.

Over and over and over again, a tight end lost his battle or blew his assignment. Where is the coaching? How is every player in a room completely messing up his assignment every time? It's a complete disaster

It's getting to an embarrassing state for Oklahoma, and it's a problem that has stretched on for years. Ever since Finley took over the tight end room in 2021 (as an aside, why is a Lincoln Riley hire still in Norman?), the talent and production has dropped year-over-year and the bottom has finally fallen out.

If Kanak, who converted from linebacker this offseason, didn't look as good as he has a receiver, there would be absolutely zero reason to play any of these tight ends. Finley lucked into a position convert being a really good athlete. None of the other players have shown anything that should be the standard at Oklahoma. I'm loathe to say Oklahoma should just live in 4WR sets, but at this point, they might as well. That room is several leagues more talented than their tight end room is.

At this point of the season, I don't think there's anything you can do to salvage this room. There's just a dearth of talent at the position, and it's been that way for years. A school that has long produced playmakers at tight end has been reduced to taking in talents from Pittsburg State and Kennesaw State, because nobody else would come here. It's sad, and there's no reason for this to continue. Change has to come.

This is some of the funniest film I’ve ever seen.

I think three more wins is their best case scenario. Not really sure it’s possible with that schedule. That offense is early 2000s Baylor-level bad.

Honestly, it's really mostly on the o-line. Bendenbaugh needs to retire. He's way past his prime, and BV, much like late stage Mack, can't see the forest for the trees, so it's killing the entire offense in general. It starts with the o-line, and I don't even know if Mateer can compete in this league. He got absolutely wrecked, albeit by an elite unit, but he was basically giving away free INT's, too. He was making his WR's turn into DB's from the second quarter on.

I don't know much about Ott, but I did remember thinking it was not a solid pickup, even though everyone in the media was pumping him up like he was Justice Haynes or some shit. Just taking a look at Murray's recruiting and development proves he was not a good fit. Ou HAS to fire both Murray and Bendenbaugh if they want to have any success in this league. They are both terrible (prime Bendenbaugh was great). Murray flat out sucks. Taylor Tatum is as gone as Ced Baxter.

It's absolutely the OL, but I don't know if letting Bill go is the answer.  Now that he's finally had the NIL stuff and closing out recruitment put onto people who love doing it, he's back to competing for top talent.  If there's a criticism I'd level at him now, it's that he's allowed the line to become far too passive to match the scheme.  He needs to be an advocate for what makes a successful run game, not just someone who implements the things he's told to.

If you could swing the scythe, who would you keep on the offensive coaching staff?

My view is this:

-Joe Jon Finley was a bum at ATM and he's been a bum at OU. I don't know what he's doing with his charges, honestly. It almost seems like guys get worse as the season moves forward. We saw that with certain groups under Mack Brown, everywhere under Strong, and in a lot of places with Herman. No one hires a perfect staff, so there's nits to pick across any staff in the country, but JJF stands out as one of the worst position coaches I could name anywhere right now. Some of that is due to familiarity, but not all of it.

-Jones could well be a victim of circumstance, but we're nearing a point where it doesn't matter. Injuries decimating the WR room? Two years in a row? That's a shame. Also a shame? There aren't any actual dudes in the room in the first place and the statistics bear that out. This is from a program that seemed like it produced a top 3 round WR pick every year for two decades.

-Murray is saved only by Finley in terms of being the worst assistant on any staff I can think of right now. He can at least recruit, I guess, but he does nothing with those recruits once they get to campus. It also seems like he actively finds a player in the RB room to dislike and beat up on each year. The RB room is where highly ranked 4 stars and 5 stars go to die. Sawchuk, Tatum, Barnes, Ott - they are all within the last 2 years of being complete busts or mediocrities. Maybe some got hurt? Who cares? The excuses might be legitimate, but they aren't improving the situation.

-Bedenbaugh is enigmatic, at this point. He was once considered one of the best in the business and had guys going in the 1st round it seemed like every year. He fell asleep in recruiting and ignored the portal for a few years and now the product on the field is absolute dogshit. This is another spot where the group seems to be devolving as the seasons wear on, particularly the past two years. Again, injuries can be part of the problem, but cry me a river. Every program in the country deals with building OL injury issues as the season continues because this is a brutal, violent sport, especially in the trenches.

I have zero faith in Arbuckle to make solid hires simply because he hasn't been around long enough to know what he's doing in that regard. I'd been hiring talent for 6 years when I was 29 and shit was still somewhat of a mystery to me. Unless he's a savant, how the fuck is he going to know who to poach or promote? Venables is part of why you're in this offensive mess. One thing about Nagy is that he is connected throughout CFB and the NFL when it comes to coaching personnel. Maybe he's a legitimate asset on this front if OU does decide to clean house offensively.

Also, Schmidt is outdated and from a different era. I don't see OU looking bigger, faster, or meaner than any other P4 team they're playing. They outplayed Michigan and Auburn, but they didn't have a size or speed advantage to my naked eye. Against Texas? They looked smaller and slower across the board. Are you guys seeing something differently?

There is a realistic chance that OU could turn into an Arkansas or Ole Miss type program. They have too many more seasons like they’re about to have and kids won’t give a damn about their history. They’re poor. Even Mizzou could supplant them because there’s talent in Missouri around St. Louis and the alums have money. They got super lucky with the Stoops hire, but NIL has screwed them. They could very well turn into a stepping-stone job for coaches who want to go on to programs with money.

At least that’s my pipe dream.

Nearly exactly this.  JJF and Murray are stealing paychecks at this point.  Tough to get rid of "family", but sentimentality should not be part of the decision.  Jones, I need to see big wins either in development or recruiting to justify keeping him.  Doesn't look like there's anyone in '27 in the top 300 that he leads for.  Bedenbaugh I'm still in on, for reasons outlined above.

You'd have to think Nagy or BV would have options in mind.  RBs and TEs should be dead simple to project, recruit, and develop.

UT, A&M, Tech, SMU, and hell, TCU and Baylor can all out-bid OU for Texas talent, which has always been the okies' lifeblood. Their over-the-table NIL game ain't what their under-the-table cheating game was back in the day. Nobody deserves Nebraska like irrelevance more than these meth-addled rednecks.

I love it!

100% correct and I am glad that one of your 'gargle our balls' posts came to fruition.  We looked bigger, faster, meaner and tougher against OU and I loved it.  We crushed them slowly in an ugly rock fight of a game.

In the olden days, you'd watch the game and begrudingly think or say under your breath "dang, wish we would have recruited that guy" to more than a few OU players.

This last game the only guy who was a dog that I liked and thought would start was Taylor Wein. Everywhere else was pretty unimpressed.
