I think what @Derka is saying is that there is a huge gulf of understanding between people who suffer from depression/mental illness and those who don't, unless you experience it yourself.

For people like me who don't understand, we categorize it as "having the blues," or claim it will go away once you solve the problem, or reaching out should be enough to prevent a suicide. I'm sure many a person has been saved by someone caring, but there seems to be a large group of people who are immune to any effort to save them. My friend's son ultimately was.

So we are just gonna believe the cops now? I'm not saying anything else happened but since when do we just take that at face value without considering anything else.

I’m all ears for whatever it is you think really happened. Please, enlighten me.

Lol, I literally have multiple family members that are psychiatrists and a family support network is quite literally one of the first steps when someone is suicidal. I am responding to Derka's stupid ass claim that support networks mean nothing. Maybe in this case they did or didnt, but that was not relevant to the point being made.

The one thing that took "the act" out of my own personal realm of consideration is hearing it described as that person killed somebody. He killed somebody's brother, somebody's son, somebody's teammate. As low as Ive ever been I could never get past that part, the absolute devastation that would never go away in the people I love. When I was 18 my cousin self deleted and that entire side of the family was never the same.

Am I lucky to have people that love me to consider during those terrible moments? Absolutely. My heart goes out to everyone who's ever been so low and had nobody in their lives to change their mind. And every person's mental illness is different. I also consider myself lucky that Ive had the wherewithal to remind myself during those times, it's not taken for granted and Im certainly not saying everyone else should be lucky enough to save themselves

I know its Surly, but I genuinely don’t understand the utility of pissing contests about who knows mental illness the best or worst.

All I can hope for is that posters have the humility to understand they can’t know things they haven’t experienced. People have generally done that pretty well in this thread.

RIP Mr Kneeland. This feels a little like the Jeff Alm story.

Yeah, people who are in that state of mind aren’t thinking “just let me wait around a minute and things will get better.” Your take is an oversimplified and dumb view of the state of mind of people in a suicidal state of mind.

Mental illness is a real bitch.

You're certainly welcome to your opinion.  Personally I think suicide is dumb.  Sorry to offend so many with my monstrous opinion that people hang on.

Lol, 0.0% huh? And you are on here exclaiming that everyone else has zero understanding of mental illness? You would be 100% wrong that reaching out to people and showing you care/love them makes no difference. It can make all the difference.

I think the issue is the suggestion that “check in on your loved ones” and “reach out to someone if you need help” has never saved a life (0.00%). That's not possibly true. You don't think there are situations similar to this where a girlfriend/spouse/parent/sibling/etc. was able to talk them out of it in the moment? The advice also isn't limited to the minutes before the act is accomplished. There are many situations where people spiral for months and even years before making the ultimate decision and succeeding in taking their own life. Again it can't be 0.00% that one of those calls didn't intervene at the right time during that spiral to get someone on the right track and avoid what might otherwise end up in suicide. It's also not possible that 0.00% of people in this state of mind ever listened to advice to reach out to someone if help is needed.

Otherwise, the point that our country doesn't take mental health seriously enough is valid. There is certainly a lot of talk about it in the last few decades but our infrustructure around it still sucks shit, especially for people who are poor and cannot check themselves into a facility or otherwise seek professional help. From a broader perspective there are things in U.S. society that cause these issues even for successful people with financial means, including our insistance that everyone must participate in the rat race, and even people with decent salaries struggle with housing costs and financial security. It's the dumbass ethos of "rampant individualism" that has infected the US that makes people feel weak for even questioning their own mental health and often looks down upon people asking for help. There are volumes to discuss on this issue and leads in some respects towards CR so I'll just leave it there I guess.

What, my opinion?

yes, it pains me to know that we have people like you and your “opinion” that mental illness is a temporary problem, with intimations that the deceased suffered from poor decision making more than anything.

Sorry to hear about this guy but I really hate seeing the words “high speed chase” in any story because it puts the lives of others in danger. Since he appeared to escape the police chase, I assume the local law enforcement has a policy against following too close in these chases. Effectively letting them get away, and continue to look for them.

Gotcha.  IMO you sound like a professional victim.  Certainly not my lane.  Carry on.

I listened to the leaked audio. I got bad chills and sick from it like seeing the CK video. It was too cold and by the book process to not be real IMO.

”people with diabetes should decide to make their pancreas properly produce and regulate insulin. not sure why they don’t just think of that.”

im not sure i want to find out what “your lane” is.

My lane is not whining my way through life and dealing with things that can be gasp hard. It pains me that there are so many so called adults in this country who are perpetual victims and always looking for something to be offended by.

Well, glad you’ve got it all figured out. We should put you in charge of solving the mental health crisis in this country. It would solve a lot of problems.

Don’t have anything intellectual to offer but depression and suicide and is a mfer. I’ve had some lows in my life but walked in my step brother hanging and cut him down. He wasn’t even sad he wanted to die he was sad I saved him. No one has any idea what the hell people are going through inside.

Talk about an oversimplified and dumb take. Not sure why the idea of hanging on until things improve makes some of you so apoplectic.  But I guess I’m not as oppressed, marginalized and sad. Continue being outraged lulz. Wonder what your trigger will be tomorrow.

Black friends are fair tickets for you white boy. You bought and you’re gong to spend.

Of all people bro, you should not be taking about mental health. How many posts do you have here? And how much time do you spend policing the discourse here? Even in a football thread. it’s a lot. You ruin this place.

Check your own mental health.

Do you understand that there is a difference between losers who look for sympathy for being marginalized, gender-shamed, fat-shamed, etc, and people suffering from serious mental health issues due to things they can’t control like their physiological makeup and social conditions like rape, war veterans w PTSD, and more?

Yes. As I mentioned, I’ve lost family members.  But I also understand it’s not always as you say.  And it’s also annoying when an innocent, well intentioned thought is immediately jumped on by the whiny thought police. Apparently opposing viewpoints can’t be tolerated any longer.  Do you understand that?

Type 2 diabetics often can make things better with a smart diet.

But it’s not easy for some people so they don’t do it.

Nope, he said 0.0% of people have been saved by someone caring or reaching out. He didnt say what you said, which actually makes sense.

I think derka just explained his opinion poorly.  I agree with him that once someone has resolved to do it, has a means to do it, and will get it done in short order that no, emotional appeals from loved ones do not make much of a difference.  zero percent?  probably debatable.  now, maintaining communication with and actively making an effort to check in on people that you know may be struggling absolutely makes a difference.  if he thinks that does nothing then he is mistaken.
