Took my kids to see it Saturday night. I thought it was pretty fucking terrible. My kids said it was pretty good.

Krypton the dog was....... a choice.

This movie was unapologetically corny and optimistic and for our timeline that's refreshing and novel.

Mostly agree-we saw it this morning with the kids and I appreciated that it was sufficiently different from previous takes-this was the first in which Superman as a son seemed to be the main theme (certainly that’s part of some of the previous efforts but doesn’t really drive the plot).

Also glad to see a Superman film go weird and have a sense of humor after the po-faced Returns and Snyder versions.  Also glad that Gunn didn’t overly mine All-Star Superman, the best version of him ever written but doesn’t fit an introductory story.

Worst part for me was Hoult, who I like in other things but insufficiently lacking in menace here (instead he comes off as petulant).  Compare this to Josh Hartnett in Trap, and who does a great job of playing calculating and a little scary without getting hammy.

This is a tough movie to review. It was all over the place. I'm not a James Gunn fan so I knew I was probably in trouble going in, but this was less Gunn-ish than I thought it would be. Way too much loud, dumb, CGI all over the place for my tastes. Great casting all around, although Lex was probably the low point. Didn't care for him shouting out Battleship coordinates as a way to defeat fucking Superman. Corenswet was probably the second-best live action Superman ever. Very likable, unlike Henry Cavill.

Overall I'd recommend it, although I doubt I'll ever watch it again. Will watch a sequel.

I liked Cavill a lot at the time, but I don’t think he could play this version nearly so well as Corenswet did.

We’re talking matters of degree, but also Corenswet is just less pretty than Routh, Reeves, and Cavill, and I think that works better for a Superman who’s meant to be a little closer to people and a little messy.

I rewatched the film and I definitely enjoyed it more. Went up a point in my book. I’m curious if the original cut of this film was closer to 150mins. Even after a 2nd watch, there’s stuff with no context littered across the film. “Don’t tell him anything Superman, it’s okay, I have no family”. That hit me the 2nd time around, but I couldn’t help but feel his character had some scenes axed.

I'm really hoping for an adaptation or amalgamation of All-Star at some point in the DCU. It's just such a fucking great story

I think Supergirl is where he's really going to get weirder since that should be a mostly cosmic/off world type movie and Lobo is a character in it. I think her being a party girl will fall very much in line with previous Gunn mythology.

that was pretty wild 😮

i had read/knew nothing going in...no idea it would be so directly allegorical.

i was quite amused lol

Corenswet looks too much like Cavill. or maybe they both just look like Superman🤔 he sure has a nice ass 😎

DC continues to be heavier and darker than Marvel, which is probably why i prefer it.

entertaining.

Good movie. Enjoyed it more than I expected. Solid acting all around for the most part. Loved the dog, which I went in expecting to find too cheesy to stand. Actual characters you could root for. Had its issues, but my favorite Superman movie.

I thought it was extremely gimmicky.  Way too many "Get out of jail free" cards for the writers.

Then again, it's a comic book movie, so let's go!

Something I just thought about a week after seeing this... Was there a scene with a Clark shirt rip/change into Superman? I do not recall one. That's like the most iconic Superman thing there is. Kind of weird.

There was not. I wouldn't hate it if they have Supergirl doing the trope next summer. Look Out!

I think it should be a major plot point that she does not wear the suit under her clothes. Then she gets drunk and forgets. Whoops! Naked. Also, she should have a filthy lesbian relationship experiment with Lois, and whoever Tits McGee was working in the Daily Planet.

I should really write these movies.

I enjoyed it. Superman comics always had weird shit in it, and Gunn leaned into that.

David Corenswet makes a great Superman, and he and Henry Cavill absolutely favor each other. I think it is too bad that Snyder went all dark and broody, because Cavill is actually a very charming guy who doesn't take himself too seriously. But back to Corenswet, I think he was the right fit.

And not to CR this, but parts of this are very on the nose for today.

DC is in good hands with Gunn.

Hah!  I would not have taken you for a comics girl.

And yes, I think the times call for a slightly sillier or lighter version of comic book heroes than the Snyder “Greek Gods battling each other, humans behold in AWE.”

I’m probably in the minority, but I thought Man of Steel was better than this one. Not by a wide margin, and I recognize that they are two completely different interpretations. But I really liked Man of Steel.

The OG Superman with Reeves, Hackman, and the John Williams score will always be magical to me.

Disagree. I don't enjoy the entire tone of the SnyderVerse. Superman shouldn't be like Batman. The mass genocide of Metropolis also doesn't sit well with me. It was as far from the Reeves Superman as possible. Maybe it was fine then but it's pretty terrible now. Agree with your 2nd statement.

I’ve tried to get my kids into it and they check out whenever the the film shifts to Lex.  Superman II holds their attention better.

They’ve been raised on a heavy diet of the animated Justice League, so that’s kind of their definitive version (and tonally, the Gunn version is closest to that).

I’ve let them watch Man of Steel but I turn it off before the third act (basically when Superman destroys the world engine in the Indian Ocean).  Everything that follows isn’t in keeping with the popular version of Superman as a protector.

Sure but Snyder's one fits in that timeframe of directors decided to wipe out mass numbers of people like it wasn't a big deal. Him, Michael Bay, JJ Abrams in Star Trek and Star Wars. I don't blame Cavill since it was the hand he was dealt. Don't even get me started on the Martha crap in Batman vs. Superman.

Come to think of it, Snyder would be an inspired choice for an adaption of The Authority.  Imagine Cavil’s Superman like character in a romantic relationship with Ben Affleck’s Batman.

Saw it last night. Really great. The casting of the new Superman was an excellent choice.

My movie experience was horrible. I went to a Regal cinema for the first time since whenever, and it sucked for two reasons. First, instead of the 10-minutes or so of previews you get at Alamo, we had a 6:00 show time, and sat through over 30 minutes of previews AND commercials before the movie started.

Second, we saw it in 4DX. I thought it might be cool, but it was waaaaaaay overdone. Our seats were tilting and shaking throughout 80% of the movie, usually in a way that wasn’t even synced to the action in the movie. Seats just shaking for fuck’s sake. Even my kids, who love a good amusement park ride, didn’t enjoy that.

Fuck Regal.

i bumped the alamo thread because sony has enshittifed alamo

I think if I wanted to show off my home theater set up, I’d show my company Man Of Steel. It’s a visually beautiful film with some cool action. Though Superman (2025) just feels right. I know DC characters have dozens of iterations, but this version of Superman feels proper. Empathy over Power. Kindness over Dominance.

Henry Cavill's Superman always looked put out. Like he was pissed off he had these powers and had to do good things and save people. This movie corrected that to the point where he's giddily saving squirrels and dogs.

Really enjoyed it, solid B+. Besides the humanity displayed by Superman, his parents, my favorite part is giving him some proper high stakes villains. Also makes me wonder if Gunn kinda phones it in for Guardians 3.

Saw it yesterday.   It was kinda meh.   Luthor's entire motivation being just a fucking hater was too much for me to deal with.   He was willing to destroy the world to kill Superman.    Sucks because I like the actor and I thought they had the physical aesthetic down

HOTB Jr and I watched it today. Neither of us are really into superhero movies, but we both loved it.

And I'm sorry, it should not be CR to talk about how it's good to help everyone, even those different than you. If you found yourself thinking, "Maybe Superman is wrong and Lex Luthor might have a point", then you really need to reexamine your moral compass.

Oh and also, the dog was fantastic. I saw him in the trailers and thought it was some stupid shit. But Krypto is now my favorite movie canine ever.

when he saved the squirrel i was sold

he had to sort-of-kill his doppelganger to save the infant

justice gang was winning

the dog was winning

mr. terrific is a bmf

the boys could slide right in to this milieu - starlight as lois' rival for supe?

it's wide open for crossovers: starship troopers, transformers and keaton batman would all rock

Saw it over the weekend with the family and really liked it for many of the same reasons mentioned above-- Superman more human and relatable than any version since 1978.  And more "fun" and less gods of war, even with high stakes.  Sure it had some camp, for me not too much, though I can see how others might not like it.

I think this could be a great building block for a DCU, I'm eager to see what they do next.

Oh and the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel can get it.  I really enjoyed her portrayal of Lois, definitely the best since Margot Kidder.

I enjoyed the Snyderverse movies but they weren't really Superman films. It's not supposed to be dark and serious.

I think people that didn't enjoy this film need to try and approach it from a different angle. It's a comic book movie, it's supposed to be campy and goofy. More importantly, it's also a Superman movie, and I think people tend to forget what Superman is supposed to be like because of the Snyderverse and how dark some of the other DC stuff is (like Batman).

A big part of Superman's persona/aura is that he is just...good. He is so purely, childishly good that it flies way past the point of absurdity and even humanity, which is appropriate because he is actually a goddamn alien.

If your kids are enjoying this and you're being a sour puss about it, they're reading a comic book and you're stubbornly trying to watch what you think should be Citizen Kane.

I would say for me, even though I’m not a big DC film fan, I recognize the historical importance of the creation of Superman and what he meant, especially for the creators. That means being extra on film so the humanity and the goodness shine through. Even if it may come across as cheesy, because come on… Americans, we kinda need reminders.

6/10. Wasn’t terrible. I couldn’t get over how weak Superman was. He’s fucking Superman and half the movie is him getting his ass kicked. I was also expecting Mr Terrific to be cooler based on the reviews, but he was just extremely generic and boring.
Also, give the Hawkgirl actress one night with me and see if she still wants to be lesbian after.

I actually agree with Helobious here. I grew tired with scene after scene of Supes getting smacked around. I also did not like Nicholas Hoult. Lex is a villain that needs to have a sense of humor (albeit a morbid one). Hoult's portrayal was about as unmemorable as it can get.

I did love Krypto and Mr. Terrific. And Nathan Fillion was fantastic. I wish he had more screen time.

I'm excited to see where Gunn goes from here. I can't wait to see how he handles Bruce Wayne/Batman.
