Wisner should have better YPC number, which I believe was the lowest since Daniel Young or Tre Watson (for a Texas lead RB). He will better if he does not have to carry the full load of the run game, which he certainly wasnt built for last year.

I think so as well.

2021 - Bijan 5.8, Johnson 5.9, Keilan 7.2, Brooks 6.8

2022 - Bijan 6.1, Johnson 6.0, Keilan 3.4, Brooks 6.6

2023 - Brooks 6.1, Baxter 4.8, Keilan 11.2, Blue 6.1, Wisner 6.1

2024 - Blue 5.4, Wisner 4.7, Gibson 4.8

Maybe the step up to the SEC had something to do with it, but it was more likely due to Ewers shortcomings in stretching the field.

I hope that was it. Arch is definitely going to make defense cover more of the field. You usually worry about turnovers with young QBs, but given how many Texas dealt with last year I dont think the number will increase much. I would probably bet it decreases.

Wisner will also have a lot fewer carries inside and in shortage situations that he wasn't suited to that will go to Baxter and Clark/Gibson.  That will help his average.

I love those numbers for Bijan & Brooks, but 4.7 ypc isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination.

In college it is below average, especially for a blue blood RB. NFL is another story

Arch being a threat with his legs should help too. Forcing the defense to account for him. Would like to see some option plays to force the defense to make decisions, because Arch got wheels

Cautiously optimistic at best. Rarely do first year starting QBs win, much less play for national championships. Arch's 3rd year in Sark's system raises those odds some. Next year would be a better year for unrealistic expectations. I think 1-3 losses seems fair. Not expecting an SEC championship but I think playing for one again is a good goal. Depending on seeding, I think making the playoffs, reaching the semis again and being competitive with any team with a chance to win every game is a good goal for this year's team.

You said this backwards, but I was curious how true it was. I don’t know what you are considering “rare”, but it certainly happens. From what I could tell, just in the last decade:

2021: Stetson Bennett - winner (he played the previous season but pretty comparable experience to Arch, a few starts, 1,179 yards and 8 passing tds

2021: Bryce Young - runner up

2020: Mac Jones - winner (borderline, he made 4 starts after Tua went down the previous year)

2018: Trevor Lawrence - winner

2017: Jake Fromm - runner up

2016: Jalen Hurts - runner up

2015: Jake Coker - winner

the googles AI says the average ypc for 2024 NCAA running backs was 4.4.  But yeah, 4.7 is still barely better than average.

Fewer self sacks, batted balls and ballet moves should help the running game by increased down field threat as well. Couldn't help myself. Sorry.

Starting RBs and at a program like Texas? I highly doubt that. Here is just the SEC (cfbstats.com - 2024 Southeastern Conference Player Leaders). If I take out RBs with less than 100 carries, he still finished 14th in ypc.

This is the third most excited about a Texas team I've been in my lifetime heading into a season, following the 2005 and the 1983 teams. I feel like we have the fewest roster questions of anyone in the country.

Does anyone remember that 1999 Kansas State team? They went 11-1 but were smashed by Nebraska so no one ever thinks about them. I remember when they came to Austin. They had Beisel and Darren fucking Howard as their defensive ends. The defense overall was really salty with a lineup of 25 year old junior college transfers who were illiterate but enjoyed killing people on the football field. Well, and off the football field, too. Anyway, they'd line up those defensive ends with these ridiculous splits wide on either side. Major Applewhite would get the snap and it looked like those two guys could almost pick it off before they drove him into the ground. The stats say there were only 6 sacks in that game, but it sure felt like a lot more than that.

I feel like we're about to see something similar on a weekly basis this year. We have literally never had this many great college level pass rushers on the same team. Ever. That's not even including what Terry and Jackson may turn into down the road. Simmons and Hill are NFL elite caliber.

BTW, McCoy was The Prestige level magician for that 2009 team. I always felt like the 2008 team was better. We all talk about that Alabama game and the McCoy injury, but that 2008 Texas team beats Florida.

Darlene (one of my dogs) get excited when we are doing well. She thinks something good is happening. (She's right)

She goes into her kennel when things are going poorly.

The option? You mean the option for someone to knock the shit out of him whether he keeps the ball or not? Count me out.

If he wants to run and slide or get out of bounds, peachy. He doesn’t need any more reasons to get lit up like he’s Marty fucking Akins or something. You know, imo.

He's not talking about running the wishbone. He means Sark mixing it in maybe one or two times per game to use the look in later series to keep the D on their heels.

I suspect Sark will do just that, as it's good OC planning.

As for running it regularly, agreed, and I seriously doubt Sark would because last I checked he wasn't horribly regarded.

Yeah a couple times per game. I’m not talking about running the Collin Klein offense and turning into him into a vegetable.  Otherwise I’m sure most of his runs will be broken plays, we don’t have to David Ash him

There were 100 qualified rushers (QB and RB) who averaged over 5.3 yards a carry in FBS last year.

4.7 yards per carry is not very good for the college game.

I believe he suffered a concussion as well but it’s interesting to note that in an interview this summer he claims he didn’t.

I’m not claiming he’s running the wishbone. If Texas wants to have Manning run any kind of run option against my defense, he’s going to get driven into the turf every time, whether he has the ball or not, and I don’t care what the guy with the ball does those one of two times.

Giving the defense the opportunity to tune him up as a straight runner is Davis/McCoy/Alabama regarded and if Sarkisian does it, someone needs to check him for stroke symptoms.

Around 6 is good for college game. Over 6 and closer to 7 is amazing.

Number of Surlyites worried about it now, 70%, number worried when Arch keeps at the 25 and runs for a 75 TD 25%. Number worried when later in the game Arch rolls like the same play, safeties bite and its a toss to Wingo on a cross for a 40 yard TD to go up 14 on Georgia, zero.

There are 9 programs that the voters seem to think have a shot at winning the national title. I don't know if Vegas sees it differently, but the voters reflect a very big off dropoff in votes for Miami at 10 in both polls.

The 9 teams are Texas, Penn State, Ohio State, Clemson, Georgia, Notre Dame, Alabama, Oregon and LSU.

6 of those teams will be starting a QB with limited or no experience. PSU has Allard, LSU has Nussmeier, and Clemson has Klubnik. Any of the other 6 could easily be in the title game and winning it. The notion folks are putting out there, not just in this thread or on this board, that a team needs an experienced QB to win it is unfounded and ignorant. Hell, many folk are taking things a step further and picking Ohio State to beat Texas in game one because of Manning's inexperience and replacing 4 OL starters (neverminding Goosby playing a ton in the final 5 games). This claim is made while OSU prepares to start a QB who has taken less than 20 snaps in college and is also replacing 4 OL. Silly.

Just don't cheer when he runs for a 75 yard TD in the play nor for the personal foul flag that removes the OSU LB from the game.

The flaw here is any sane DC is going to take the chance to clock him whether he has the ball or not. His keeping the ball doesn’t change that. He’s getting hit no matter what.

Yeah, I saw it the first time.

I forgot the stats, but I believe Arch was quite good vs the blitz last year. DC is going to want to hit any QB, but if Arch makes them pay for bring an extra player a DC's options are quite limited.

I'm not saying that Manning was or wasn't concussed, but you are straight up delusional if you think Sarkisian is going to talk about his head injury history, should he have one, in public. If there's a way to get on the bad side of that family, it's to start hinting that the grandkid isn't playing, or isn't playing well, due to an injury like a concussion. The NFL has started discounting players with concussion histories when it comes to the draft and in free agency.

So, yeah, you are not looking at any kind of data point there, man.

And, while the OSU defense is going to have plenty of talent, the front 7 is not as good as UT's. With a brand new DC replacing who many consider the best DC in college football. So their inexperienced, portal heavy OL has the poorer matchup.

I did see the PFF guy use some of this reasoning to pick Texas, but he is the only national guy to laud UT's DT quality and depth as a potential factor in this game. The ONLY one.
