Fall camp is over as of today it's game prep week.

Here's where the convo for the season is going on.

That’s a game week thread. I don’t see why you feel the need to attempt to engineer the discussion when nothing problematic is happening here.

It was good that you started the aggy and so season threads earlier. Those other threads get dumb.
the TexAgs everyone post every thought that pops into your head spam is dumb. We can sometimes err too strongly on the side of meta threads imo. Not sure it’s solvable.

Seems like a good theory.

Bobby didn't answer that question either, and he is normally pretty good at that. Considering he also said that Brooks isn't getting any run with the first team at RT when Baker moves to LT, I think I may be onto something.

I don’t recall us really having a Texas season thread in the past. Do we need one? I can remove “fall camp” from this title or someone could start something, I guess. I assume most OSU chatter will wind up on that thread from here.

Why is OTF scared of Ohio state? Is not like they are sabans bama. Yes, they reload just like us and recruit at a high level. But this is Ryan freaking day we’re talking about. I know they beat us last year but we really beat ourselves.

Didn’t they lose a ton of people? We should upgrade at QB and that should be enough to put us in the win column. I am a bit worried about the O line but if arch can actually run and or buy time it may be okay.

I expect a win but also nothing surprises me anymore so who really knows lol

We’ve reached the point heading into the season where Bobby and Gerry have worked each other into a handwrung fever pitch about their worries for Texas. It looks like they’ve convinced themselves of a loss to Ohio State and then a CFP appearance is fully at risk.

I view it as a good sign. I don’t buy for one second that “this is the best Ohio State OL in two decades”.

Just hit 100k subs, gotta drive clicks

I think we normally have an all-encompassing Texas football thread during the season? I vote change the name to 2025 football season or something.

We're playing on the road against the #3 team in the nation who doesn't frequently lose at home. They haven't had more than 2 losses in a season since 2011.

Maybe it isn't absolutely crazy or clickbaity for people to think a win is difficult. It's actually quite rational.

We have the weekly game threads that go about 15 or 20 pages depending upon the matchup and we had a season thread for macro stuff in between last year that probably got to 20 or 30 pages.

What, you don't enjoy the reactionary doom-and-gloomers that see a run for a 1-yard loss and want Sark fired immediately?

Only after a win do I read that thread and they are glorious. I wouldn’t read one in real time to save my life.

There was some game thread I popped in on last season, where whoever ran for like six yards on one of their first few plays. Like eight different people said different versions of "This defense is fucking awful!".

Bobby has predicted Texas would lose every big non conference game in recent history. Ian Boyd has convinced himself our secondary is actually a liability and we will struggle to cover anyone.

12-0 confirmed.

And we still haven’t heard from FCB and Kirk.

I changed the title. Everyone should go discuss 0hio State game stuff on the game thread.

They did this shit last year with Michigan, ou, and aggy. It's become insufferable.

Love the title as a theme for the 2025 season. Obviously a fit and a nice homage to the Luv ya Blue.

Nahlin said that Winston has returned to practice. That's very good news, as we heard he'd be out a couple of months last week.

That's kind of weird.  They all said it would be a couple of months.

No doubt the doctors can speak to this better, but separated shoulders become a pain tolerance thing at some point. Maybe Winston has “Bad Motherfucker” written on his wallet.

It’s also Nahlin reporting it.  I hope it’s true.  I just don’t trust much of what he says.

That's true, I'll never forget the game Emmitt Smith had against the Giants where he ran for over 200 yards with an arm he couldn't move.

Nobody thinks it's going to be an easy game.

That said, it will suck massive donkey balls if we become the first #1 ranked team ever to lose to a kid QB making his first ever start. There's a reason those first start green QBs are 0-18 all time in this scenario. If our defense doesn't wreck his shit and force him into game losing plays then our defense underachieved on the day.

Then again, how many of those QBs played on a top 5 ranked team? Not sure. This is probably the most difficult situation a #1 team has ever been in against a first start QB

I didn't see a playoff thread so I thought I'd drop this here. Was listening to Audible podcast and they were breaking down their playoff picks. Russo brought up his research (new to me) that shows the typical breakdown of playoff teams (or their end of season rankings) and their position in the preseason polls.

For the current format, you would typically have,

4 of the top 5 get in

2 from 6-10

2 from 11-20

1 from 21-25

3 unranked

My picks would be

Texas, Penn St, Clemson, Georgia (Ohio St falls off somehow, our beatdown sets them on wrong track, Sayin is no good)

Notre Dame, LSU (ND returns a lot, trust Nussmaier more than Simpson at Bama)

Arizona St, Florida (ASU repeats as Big12 champ, Florida seems as good as any other pick in that range)

Iowa St

Nebraska, Tulane, Georgia Tech (Tulane is the Group of 5 pick but otherwise dart throws)

If Freeman finds a qb who can throw and lets him, they will be a tough out because they are a very physical team.  If he keeps running the qb battering ram offense, they won't be able to get over the hump.

I'm sorry, did you just put UF in the CFP? Lol wut? Their savior QB can't stay healthy for more than a month at a time. Let s also not forget Napier is still the HC.

Ohio State is making the playoffs. They have a pretty easy schedule aside from playing us, Penn State, Illinois, and I guess Michigan if they can have a pulse. Other than that, they miss Oregon, USC, Indiana, and Iowa.

I mean yeah I did.

The point is that who makes it to top 12 is way more unpredictable than you might expect every year. I imagine you would've said wtf to anyone suggesting ASU, SMU or freaking Indiana last year.

That won't happen this year. Carr's not a runner. However, that doesn't mean he'll be good at all. I just don't believe he'll do much for that offense with his rushing ability.

SMU and Indiana, yes. I watched ASU play, so that didn't surprise me. My only issue is coaching, not talent. Their QB is injury prone, and their HC is an idiot. They don't have a serviceable backup, which is why I just can't see UF in the CFP. Napier is a good recruiter, but a horrendous cosch in this league.

We’ll do it!  I won the first year. Probably the second year two in a tie with about 100 other people at 2 that year.
Whining for the first year out of 12?  That’s actually pretty interesting. Love to see those results. Probably Helo won, right?

Didn't know where to post this and hadn't seen it until today, so here it goes. 247 posted their updated talent composite rankings heading into the season. Link is below.

Highlights:

-walk-ons like Endries and Taaffe do not contribute to the scores due to the rankings being based on high school recruiting.

-STs guys who did get scholarships are counted, so guys like Lance St. Louis and Will Stone do count.

-Those are two flaws with the system and that could create an imbalance for any school that doesn't develop, or portal, walk-ons and does not offer ST players.

-Development of talent is pretty key, obviously. This ranking does a decent job of inadvertently highlighting who does and does not develop the talent on their campus. I know I'm biased, but ATM and OU both stand out as programs on this list who are performing below their ranking on an annual basis now. Auburn, Florida, and Miami are also pretty hideous developers if you just go off rankings versus output. ATM and Auburn are by far the worst.

-The falloff from Texas at 4 to Oregon at 5 is rather large. Georgia is way out in front, but a big portion of that is that they've got so many more signees on their roster.

-You can argue that there are at least 3 tiers on this list. The first 4 teams should be considered CFP favorites. 5-16 should be considered CFP regulars and 17-down is everybody else. Now, is that infallible? No. ATM and Auburn immediately debunk that premise. But as shorthand, for me at least, the premise makes sense in terms of generally matching my expectations.

I never understood why recruitniks tend to default to a total metric as opposed to average, especially on an annual basis (which is not the case here, but still).  I'd rather sign a smaller class of better players than a larger class of lesser players.

The roster spreadsheet I track has a Texas Grid tab (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1TzoBTIvCXfZIk7Sz3C9txMg0yPvrXyVM/edit?gid=537784767#gid=537784767) with 247 composite ratings using the transfer rating instead of high school. There's also a team summary at the bottom that excludes special teams (K/P/LS) and former walk-ons (Taafe, Landwehr) from the average rating and blue chip ratio columns.
