When ICE raids a plant and say ten people are rounded up, there likely will be 1 us citizen wrongly swept up, there likely will be 2 cases of immigrants that really should be here that are law abiding and productive and the rest will likely be really horrible people that never should have been here and need to be deported post haste.

Racist little pigfucker, go fuck yourself.

This is the foundational problem.

Reporting on simple facts, like "the temperature data gathered in the Gulf of Maine over the past 50 years shows that the body has reached a temp 4 degrees warmer than its long-term average" is liberal slant/bias.  You have a POTUS firing the head of the BLS because....it reported and adjusted job numbers using the EXACT same methodology it has used forever, including during his first term, Obama's term, Biden's term, etc.  Reporting of ACTUAL FACTS is...to use the exact word from the leader of "conservatives" is "rigged."

A society never gets over that.  We are going to gut every single entity that gathers or reports on objective data and facts.  Because....objective data and facts are enemy #1 of an authoritarian government.  It's not any more complicated than that.

Agree with a lot of this but you are over simplifying and ignoring context.  No serious person ever bitches about reporting of increased temps in the Gulf of Maine.  Some may question the methodology of the temp data or question if the data is raw or smoothed, but most every serious person will agree with the findings to some degree.  It is the opinion of what caused the increase or what that means for the future that is debatable.  I remember the very old thread by MOP (I think) talking about the prediction of an ice free arctic.  There was wide spread coverage of the issue.  The implications were catastrophic.  Now, a few decades later, Arctic ice extent is within a few percentage points of its mean and I haven't seen a show or read an article about arctic sea ice in years.  My guess is that if someone did simply report that "for 2024 the arctic sea ice extent was within 5% of the historical average of testing" (which is true) that it would be met with conservative, climate denying slant/bias.

Your last point is just too stupid.  There is so much more information available today than in any point in the world's history.  To suggest an "authoritarian" government can gut these entities is just ridiculous.  The numbers are provided to everyone.  The government has no control of the numbers or their dissemination.  All of the data collected gets shared with the entire freaking world.  The govt may get a first look but all the info gets out.  If Trump decided tomorrow to completely eliminate the BLS, all of the information that the BLS publishes will still be available.  Hell, AI could analyze payroll data of virtually every company in the world in almost real time and give us a much better picture of what is going on.

But not one single article about the positives.  Not one.  Just throw in one article out of 20 that details the deportation of hardened criminals, rapists, human smugglers etc.

Because we have almost always deported convicted criminals upon discovery?  Nothing novel about that.

And Trump's immigration sweeps clearly have nothing to do with deporting criminals.  It's a pure accident if they happen to deport a convict.

At which point the publisher of the conclusions of that AI would be sued by the administration for defamation.

You either really, really don't get the game here, or you're being purposefully obtuse.  And we know which one it is.

If we as a Republic -- governed by a REPRESENTATIVE government (including the executive) -- believe that "bias is bad, and truth is good," you'd see SOME action by this government to rein in the insane and obvious lies promulgated by the conservative media sphere.  You see....zero.  Instead, you see only active coordination between the government and those sources to promulgate objectively false information.

I'm not "suggesting" an authoritarian government can quash speech it finds unfavorable, I'm flat-out saying it can and will.  Such governments have done so in the past, and this government is actively working to do so in real-time.  Will there be counter-information out there, underground, spoken about on password-protected websites and such?  Of course.  There always has been.  That's not the point.  The point is that THIS current strategy is about controlling the population, via controlling the common, accessible sources of information.  Force truth-based journalism to be practiced on printed leaflets handed out from vans in Wal-Mart parking lots, while all mass-media must conform to the administration's false narrative?  That's the authoritarian play.  A play that is being run, successfully, and fully supported by fascist authoritarians and their eager enablers.  Such as yourself.

Sheeeit posits that out of 10 people arrested:

10% will be wrongly arrested (that number is perhaps high, but genuinely unknown -- the percentage of genuinely legal residents arrested (green cards, actual citizens) remains tough to sort out at present)

20% will be ordinary, otherwise law-abiding and productive people just living their lives and working (this percentage is the OPPOSITE of the actual ratio)...and

70% will be "really horrible people" (again, a percentage that is even MORE the OPPOSITE of what has been seen thus far -- around 8% of people arrested have some sort of serious criminal activity on their record)

THEN, he uses HIS bias of the facts as HE believes them to assail NPR for being counter-factual in its bias.  No, I'm sorry, I know facts hurt conservatives' feelings, but they're still facts. The reason that all objective journalism on this planet is painting a shittastic picture of the actions of this admin is because....those actions are genuinely shittastic.  Even outfits that are seen as generally center-right (like the Economist) tell the identical tale. Why?  Because....the facts are the facts.

I listen to NPR in the morning.  They REGULARLY invite conservative officials and commentators on to discuss the issues....and those people REGULARLY state outlandish, counter-factual bullshit.  I mean, obvious and insane counter-factual bullshit.  And when the host politely prods "but how to you respond to the analysis that shows that only 8% of the people arrested have a serious criminal record," they just lie some fucking more.  And NPR gets painted as "liberal biased" because it says "ummm....what you're saying does not match up to the known data, do you have different data you can share?"  There is no honest discussion with people whose entire worldview is based on the lie that their feelings are superior to all objective facts.  Those people are called "authoritarians," and they are the enemy of any functioning nation state.

Why do we still call them conservative? There is nothing conservative about anything they do.

Also this simple and obvious truth.  If we saw targeted actions, where ICE was going to specific addresses to arrest specific "bad dudes" who had committed violent crimes.....most folks would be at least accepting of that.  That's not what we're seeing.

Instead, we see them going after people who are FOLLOWING the rules (showing up to their scheduled hearings)....and then gaming it to arrest them and shove them in facilities hundreds or thousands of miles away NOT to process them for deportation, but to make them suffer and make a point (don't want to be sent to a gulag for an indefinite term?  You best GTFO America).  This is you.  This is what you want, this is what you've got, and this is what you OWN.  And you will own for all of history.  History was not kind to fascist collaborators last century.  Eventually, it will get it right this century as well.  May your grandchildren be embarrassed to say your name.

2025 Winter maximum sea ice extent in Arctic smallest on record

The National Snow and Ice Data Center reports that Arctic sea ice appears to have reached its seasonal maximum extent on March 22, 2025, 10 days later than the 1981-2010 average. Despite the late peak, it was the lowest maximum extent of the 47-year satellite era, which began in 1979.

The new record-low winter maximum is part of the long-term trend of shrinking ice cover across the Arctic as a result of global warming. All of the top 10 smallest winter ice extents of the satellite record have occurred since 2007. That pattern is clear in the graph below: the darkest lines are the most recent years, and they sit at the bottom of the stack, meaning they are also the lowest extents.

Oh for fucks sake. I will happily admit my percentages were off.  It is really hard to get accurate data.  Here is NBC news tracking of current migrants in ICE detention.  https://www.nbcnews.com/data-graphics/us-immigration-tracker-follow-arrests-detentions-border-crossings-rcna189148

54% with either a criminal conviction or pending criminal charges.  From the same article, they estimate there are 435,000 immigrants currently free in the US with criminal convictions.  If you want to argue the stats, take it up with NBC.

Good rant though.

And you're still off (from your own source):

Migrants in ICE detention

Data current through August 1, 2025

56,579

29.1% with criminal convictions

24.7% with pending criminal charges

46.8% listed as "other immigration violator"

11.9% fast-tracked for deportation

So, here's why your numbers continue to be fucked.  The 56k are ONLY the relatively small number that are currently in ICE detention (that is, it doesn't account for those already deported - which looks to be (estimates vary) around twice as many (in the 90-120k range).

Second, the "with criminal convictions" (making up that 29%) includes....literally everything, including traffic violations.  I have such a criminal conviction, I suspect that you do too...I suspect that 95%+ of the posters on here do.  We aren't dangerous criminals, and neither is Jose who got a ticket for going 60 in a 55 on the way to his landscaping job.

Third, the "435,0000 immigrants with criminal convictions" has the same flaw -- it includes traffic violations.

The bogeyman you love -- immigrants are disproportionately rapists and murderers and such -- has been proven wrong so many times it's not worth fucking going over it again.  Suffice it to say that STATISTICALLY, if I put your family in a room with 1000 random non-citizen immigrants, and then in a room with 1000 random US citizens, they will be exposed to MORE violent criminals in the room full of American citizens.  US citizens are more likely to be violent criminals than immigrants are.  Want to crack down on violent criminals?  Then crack down on violent criminals.  A victim doesn't much care about the immigration status of the person who rapes/murders them.  Go after bad guys.  This admin isn't doing that, and you know it.  You know exactly what is happening, and why it is happening.  It's about "purifying the blood of our country" (when these people tell you EXACTLY why they are doing something, you don't get to pretend they didn't say it).  And you are good with that.  Because a whiter America is a better America.  Own it.  Own what you are.  Wear it proudly.  Quit trying to be clever - you're not.

Wow.  Nowhere did I say the earth is not warming or that emissions are not part of the force.  Nowhere.  I do not deny it at all.  I also said 2024 (it was the graph I used as 2025 is not over yet).

https://nsidc.org/sea-ice-today/sea-ice-tools/charctic-interactive-sea-ice-graph

When 2024 started, the arctic ice extent was approximately 3.4% under the baseline used to track it.  Exactly what I posted.  I do not remember but I am guessing the old post was from 2012.  There were stories almost nightly on network news, Fox, CNN, MSNBC etc.  Late night talk shows, morning shows, newspapers etc.  We were told that this was a catastrophic sign.  Yet in 2024 the issue gets not a peep.  That is my point.  You are doing exactly what Brisket wrongly accused me of doing.  You can not argue the fact that in 2024 the Arctic ice extent was within percentage points of the historical mean.  Of course it could still go down and it could still be catastrophic.  But if anyone suggested in 2012 that by 2024 the ice extent would be almost all the way back to the historical mean, they would have been ostracized and laughed out of the building.  But it is true.

I'm not twisting anything. You said artic ice extent isn't an issue anymore and there weren't stories or articles on it. I posted two sources directly on point saying  Artic ice extent is very much an issue and very much still decreasing.  2012 isn't a baseline. It was a record low. The fact that ice recovered partially from a record low doesn't mean the record low, substantially beyond historical mean, wasn't concerning. 2024 wasn't within a few percentage points of "baseline." It was within a few percentage points of a record fucking low. I'm going to post this again because apparently you didn't get it:

image.png.d02e135673f66db496f1f39cdd1f36c6.png

The redline is the 2012 record minimum. The greenish/blue line is 2024. That big think gray area? That's the fucking historical baseline.

2025 is tracking very closely with 2012 and 2024. If you have a 500-year event every 5-years, it is fair to say you're dealing with a changing system. That's what happening.

Your facts were wrong. Your understanding of what you're looking at is non-existent. You're doing exactly what I accused you of doing, being an ignorant slut. And you're doubling down on it.

See, Dems have told lies before.  Therefore, dismiss the fact that the current regime is engaged in an unprecedented campaign to use the full force of the US government to 1) promulgate absolutely false information, and 2) squash dissent.

FFS, he fired the head of the BLS because the BLS reported numbers using the exact same data and methodology it has used for decades, he just didn't like those numbers....so he's going to appoint toadies who will only produce the false info that pleases him.   But, you know...."both sides."

As for "both sides will rally around their leader," no, that's fucking insane.  Just look at the Epstein files situation happening right this second.  The party that fucking CAMPAIGNED on releasing them, intimating that they would reveal the great dem pedophile cabal, has now closed ranks to protect them.  And they have the gall to tell dems "oh yeah, you won't like it -- Bill Clinton and such are in there."  Almost all non-MAGAS say "cool!  Release them, let the chips fall where they may!  If there are dem bad guys, hang 'em too!"  Fuck this false equivalency shit.  They hypocrisy of the right and its gymnastics to justify all manner of misdeeds is unmatched in American history.  And you can't help but beclown yourself in service to the cause.

Trying to keep it civil but this is just blatant bullshit.  You are a fucking attorney?  I have laid out my plan for immigration control on here for years.  I am likely more pro legal immigration than most on here.  I think the vast, vast total of immigrants in the country are good people and we are a better country because of it.  You really have just become exactly what you claim to hate.

What you will not admit, what the previous admin will not admit, what this whole "squash the lies of repubs like germany bullshit" talk will not admit when it comes to immigration is that under Biden, on purpose, the controls we had on who was allowed into the country were completely removed.  We let in a massive number of really horrible people, we allowed immigrant children to go virtually unchecked to "host" families that we can not even find anymore, we let massive amounts of fentanyl into the country etc.  Yet Mayorkas and Kamala and a large percentage of the media just lied about it and ignored it.  Of course the number of really bad people was a small percentage but a small percentage of 10 million is a shitload of people.   Remind me when any ranking dem member of congress criticized Biden when literally thousands of hispanic gang members entered the country illegally.

I think Trump firing the BLS guy is stupid and wrong.  But not any more stupid and wrong than Biden firing the general counsel of the NLRB because the unions wanted him too.  But both are legal.

TLDR; "Both sides," which - and this is the most important outcome of that approach -- justifies and excuses every.  single.  thing.  the current admin does.

I can be plenty critical of the prior administration, of every admin we've ever had, on any number of issues.  I've never claimed that Biden's record on immigration was a smashing success, but I also know that 1) the "let in massive amounts of fentanyl" is a lie (almost all fentanyl comes in at actual ports of entry (not sneaking across the river and whatnot), most of it has historically come from China, and most of the smugglers of fentanyl at land ports are . . . US citizens).  I also know that the Biden admin and Dem allies actually worked to pass meaningful legislation on the issue.....which Trump and his toadies purposefully killed to keep the issue alive to campaign on.  And I also know that the language and purpose behind "ZOMG immigration is the debil!" has next to nothing to do with fentanyl or humanitarian issues or ANYTHING but "purifying the blood of our country," and I also know that it has next to nothing to do with "just do it the right way and don't break the law, this is just about ILLEGAL immigration" because 1) they have blown right past that and are arresting people who are following the law to the letter (e.g., showing up at their immigration hearings), 2) they are YANKING legal status away from hundreds of thousands of people who are presently here legally, and 3) they are flat-out banning birthright citizenship.  Come on.  It's a racist, xenophobic movement.  It uses "drugs and crime" as the thinnest of veneers.   What it is, all the way through, is nativist, xenophobic bullshit, and you've bought into it because you AGREE WITH IT.

Our immigration system is broken. Has been for a long time. People that are here illegally should be sent home. At the same time the process is very stupid and needs to be changed. But until then follow the rules. Every country has rules wrt immigration. If you don’t follow them, you get sent out. This is like nation state 101.

Except 1) we aren't even doing that (we have blown all the way past "we're just concerned about people who broke the law), and 2) as has been discussed re immigration eleventy billion times, when you purposefully create a broken system, human nature and the laws of economics will go right around it, as they should when the laws are absurdly stupid.  Set the highway speed limit at 10 mph, and all you'll do is create an infinitely large class of "illegal drivers."  Attacking the problem by.....prosecuting every last person who drove at 11 mph or greater on the highway....is abject stupidity.

Libertarians understand and understood that.  FFS, Ronald F'n Reagan understood that.  But we live in an era where 1) we actively work to have stupid and terrible immigration laws, 2) we then take the position that the most important thing is....to FULLY ENFORCE those actively stupid and terrible laws, and 3) oh nevermind, it's not about the laws anyway, we're going to arrest people following our current laws (as stupid as they are), arbitrarily change the law/status to criminalize hundreds of thousands of people who the second before that happened were indeed here legally, oh and we're also going to just say fuck all and repeal birthright citizenship.  Because....it's not about "follow the rules."  It never, ever, ever was.  It's about nativist xenophobic idiocy to rile up the idiotic masses.  Which worked.  See posts above.

I agree that percentage depletion has little economic basis than encouraging investments in energy.  My personal experience has been with respect to individual royalty and WI holders who gladly take that perk.   Much like those that take the EV credit.  Congress does what congress does.

I have a big hunch that there is a huge net positive economic impact to the federal budget and our overall economy from the energy industry.

Agree. It’s really amazing. I see the hoops that people have to jump through to work here. These are people with PhDs and MSs trained in US schools. They get in line and play the game and pay tens of thousands of dollars to lawyers and others to navigate. It’s all nonsense. But have you looked into the process in New Zealand?

I'm not twisting anything. You said artic ice extent isn't an issue anymore and there weren't stories or articles on it. I posted two sources directly on point saying  Artic ice extent is very much an issue and very much still decreasing.  2012 isn't a baseline. It was a record low. The fact that ice recovered partially from a record low doesn't mean the record low, substantially beyond historical mean, wasn't concerning. 2024 wasn't within a few percentage points of "baseline." It was within a few percentage points of a record fucking low. I'm going to post this again because apparently you didn't get it:

The redline is the 2012 record minimum. The greenish/blue line is 2024. That big think gray area? That's the fucking historical baseline.

2025 is tracking very closely with 2012 and 2024. If you have a 500-year event every 5-years, it is fair to say you're dealing with a changing system. That's what happening.

Your facts were wrong. Your understanding of what you're looking at is non-existent. You're doing exactly what I accused you of doing, being an ignorant slut. And you're doubling down on it.

Talk about stupid.  From your link and my link:  1/5/2024 (my wife's birthday and certainly "when 2024 started" arctic ice extent 13.4 M sq km, 1/5/24 of historical baseline 13.9 M sq km.  That is 3.6%.  Exactly what I said.

You are showing your ass when I said that the network news and CNN and Fox and late night TV and morning talk shows were talking about the decline in 2012 and you countered that it is still being talked about with links from nsidc.org and climate.gov.  True bastions of mainstream information sources.

And you and brisket still miss the point or choose to ignore it.  If the ice extent was a massive story when it was at low points then it had to be a massive story when it rebounded.  I watched Scott Bessent (one of the Trump guys I like) on nbc or cbs.  He pointed out that after the tariffs were announced the network ran with headlines of major stock market crash.  Then a few weeks later when the market recovered to historics levels the network ignored it.

And of course Fox and OAN do the opposite.  It is shocking that reasonably intelligent people actually think one side is more virtuous than the other.

No.  Because I have a personal history with Jacinda Ardern.  And I really don't want to talk about it here.  Wounds are still too fresh.

But I've also got kids who have had to navigate the immigration and visa process in, collectively, 4 different countries (with overlap between them in the UK and Germany).  It's a hassle anywhere you go....but FFS, so is getting a driver's license here.  It's navigable, and not unreasonable in the countries we have experience with....it's much harder here.  Of course, this current regime also launched an effort to try to "de-citizen" people like my father, who were born in hospitals along the border back when records were not meticulously kept.  So, fuck this regime.

But, to the bigger "fix immigration" topic, it's been hashed and rehashed 10,000 times here and elsewhere.  We don't have to reinvent the wheel.  We've had a quite functional system in the past, with guest worker programs, all sorts of common-sense mechanisms.  And now, in an age of electronic processing and payment, it should be even EASIER.  We haven't done so, because we have zero interest in doing so.  Because, for the 10,000th time....it's not about a system of laws and rules and good policy outcomes.  It's about nativism, xenophobia, and nationalist/race-based division exploited for political gain and the joy and easy political tool of human cruelty.  The cruelty and the suffering is the point.  It's the entire point.  Everything else is tissue-paper-thin window-dressing.

Said the man commenting on the flaws of the SDP when the Nazis rose to power -- "it's shocking that reasonably intelligent people actually think that one side (the SDP or Nazis) is more virtuous than the other."

One is.

The one that wants to end our Republic for good is the bad guy here.  The one engaging in fucking everything we spent the last 50 years almost uniformly saying was  "yeah, that would be some bad authoritarian bullshit" is the less virtuous party.  Degree fucking matters.

Nobody here ever claimed the opposition were angels, without flaw.  But FFS, if you don't see the difference in degree, you are either lying to yourself or lying to us.  Either way, take your bullshit and fuck all the way off.

Agree completely.  Did you believe Mayorkas when asked about border policy and actions?
