Speaking of freshmen DBs, is Jonah Williams still nursing that injury from the baseball season? I hope he gets to see some playtime this year even if he’s not at 100%.

Hamstring. And yes.

On a more substantive note - I just watched Sayin's "highlights" from 2024 and all plays from the 2025 Spring Game. The dude throws a pretty ball - very tight spiral with an on time delivery. Good ball placement, although he didn't throw into many tight windows (but he didn't have to). He can move a decent bit to avoid pressure and even scrambled for a few yards.

We are going to fuck him up something fierce. He lack pocket awareness, processes slowly, and pats the ball before he throws. He does not throw the ball with any zip - his long passes weren't moonshots, but his short passes have little urgency to them. Those are all fixable problems, but they are not going to get fixed before Saturday and he is going to get his shit wrecked by our defense. If he isn't getting sacked he will throw the ball into coverage and distribute a few picks. Seriously, he does not look ready for this game. He may turn into an absolute baller by the end of the season or next season, but he's not even close to that yet.

To me, the advantage for Arch is that he's seen an elite rush come at him, and Sayin hasn't. As the video shows, the home crowd doesn't save you from it. Arch has seen elite game speed pinning its ears back and coming at him, and it won't be new to him, but it will be new to Sayin. Arch has made both bad throws and good throws knowing he's about to be hit, and he hasn't been rattled. Sayin, on the other hand, hasn't had to do so, and no one knows how he'll react. We all hated what happened here, but the sequence in the video will pay dividends for us on Saturday.

You previously said 4 of 5 OL guys were back or something along those lines.  Fryar and Jackson were #1 and 3 in terms of play snaps last year for your entire offense.  One 3 -year starter, one a 2-year starter.

As best I can tell, your 4 guys never started or really played at the same time.

At DB, Williams for us prior to injury was heavily involved in the safety rotation for two years.  Then McDonald as far as reps/years in the program tracks Mathews experience on your side.

I did not see this clarified.

People forget that Williams started vs Michigan to open the season.

Fair on the new guy comment, understood.  Only pointing out reasons why I like the OSU secondary beyond just Downs.  Re: RB, if Baxter is full go I would pick TX at the position for sure - he was excellent before the injury but as far as I understand you are not expecting him to be at that level again yet.  Wisner is a good back, I like him.  He and Donaldson seem comparable - almost the same YPC, Wisner with more yards on more carries, Donaldson with 2X the TDs.  Call it wash, perhaps - the units don't suit up against each other anyway and TX probably has the advantage in the defensive front 7, which will have a greater impact on the running game.

All of the attention from opponents will surely frustrate at times, but I am confident Simmons will still post big numbers. I feel like natural and instinctive pass rushers are one of those groups in sports who always wind up getting theirs over the course of a season.

Obviously Simmons will be an issue for most offenses, but I think Texas is going to have some killer sim pressures this year featuring Hill and the DTs that could be almost as problematic

Simmons should require two blockers on obvious passing downs, but the sim pressures really fuck with your blocking numbers even if you block them up, and those two in combination could make it difficult for offenses to get as many guys out on routes as they’re hoping for

Montgomery, Hinzman, and Tshabola were starters for all CFP games last year (I think).  Siereveld started 2 CFP games and 4 regular season games.  RT Phillip Daniels is the new guy transfer from Minnesota, with 3 starts last season.

To play devil's advocate, he's had a fall camp to refine his game and Day, I'm sure, is a good QB coach pointing that stuff out to him.

We also know that the QB is aware he isn't going to get hit in practice or the Spring game. Could read that as both a positive and negative from an interpretive standpoint. But essentially, he will speed his clock up in game and he well knows the caliber of pass rushers he will face. No doubt Day has emphasized getting the ball out quickly for this game and he might not be as motionless in the pocket holding onto the ball like in his spring game where he absolutely would have taken hits or was late getting the throw off. He is capable of manipulating the pocket and extending plays based on his HUDL tape. Question is, how well can he do so against Texas?

Also, I wouldn't be suprised if they have especially worked on high pointing the ball with J Smith and whatever else they feel like will maximize connecting with him. Without a doubt they will try not to have a repeat shut-out of him like last time and I'd be amazed if we can do so well as before.

Day can emphasize things all he wants - there is not replacement for going up against a real opposing defense who is coming at you at full speed. People can knock Manning for only starting against ULM and MSU, but he also played in several games when the shit was flying all around him. Sayin is going to have to go through the fastest maturation process in CFB history or we are going to rattle to him. Remember how Ewers looked in the first half against UGA in Austin? That's what I'm expecting.

Bobby stuff. Holy shit on Stroh. And Littleton has to be the true freshman mentioned.

Hearing more and more about offensive lineman Connor Stroh having a very strong fall camp. Stroh has started running some with the 1s on a regular basis, even when Neto Umeozulu is not pushed out to tackle. Stroh’s size and ability to move some of the bigger Texas DLs has caught the eyes of coaches.

Umeozulu has been very physical in camp. But Stroh’s size is just hard to overcome, especially as Texas looks to deploy a somewhat different run scheme this season.

We don’t know what the exact rotation will be - whether Stroh has outright won the job or if he will spell Umeozulu - but suffice to say Stroh is expected to see action on Saturday barring something unforeseen.

**

Defensive tackle Travis Shaw has shown glimpses of extreme talent in fall camp. But he’s also apparently been inconsistent at times.

Texas needs 20-30 consistent snaps from Shaw this season.

**

While I don’t want to say who, I believe there will be a true freshman in the starting lineup Saturday.

**

Quarterback Matthew Caldwell continues to run with the 2s this week.

If it's such a consensus Stroh sucks the OL recruiting last 2 years even more frustrating, dead horse i know i know

Most people have forgotten that Tech game he came in (some of his first action), after the game outcome was decided, and basically did what he wanted--- threw different types of passes and had so much time he could direct blocking as he was running in the secondary.

For OSU, 4/5 OL positions are returning starters.

This is the post I referenced.  Unless the information is flat out wrong by a long shot, Jackson and Fryar played all the snaps at Tackle in the playoffs but 9 each in the Tennessee game.  And unless it’s wrong again, you don’t have anyone starting this year that logged any snaps at Tackle for the Ohio State last year.

Ohio State certainly has a 4th guy that played and started a handful of games.  And I suppose Daniels did start a few games at Minnesota.  So perhaps I’m misreading your intention.  But I’ve read a number of Ohio State commentary posts on their OLine so forgive me.

In any event, I don’t see that 4 guys ever started together and certainly not in the same spots projected this year.  When Montgomery started last year, he was in place of one of the other projected starters this year as best I can tell.

We aren’t counting Hutson or Goosby as returning guys even though they similar resumes.

The outcome of this season probably isn't hinging on the performance of our left guard, but it would have been nice if the coaches used the 3 years of data points they had on Neto to make an informed decision on whether an outside option needed to be pursued instead of realizing a few weeks before the first game that we might be in trouble.

I liked Stroh as a recruit and he is enormous. But weren't we consistently told that his feet are a problem? That he's not quick and lacks good balance? Maybe that matters less at guard than tackle, but I don't love that note.

Offensive linemen are tough to evaluate, and they’re allowed to develop

I have a second-hand family/friend connection with Stroh. I figured I would let it play out before saying something but this has apparently been on the radar since the second scrimmage when he outplayed Neto. They've been splitting reps since then, and Stroh was taking solo reps at LG when Neto was getting tackle reps when Goosby was out.

No idea if the kid is good or not, considering he has played zero snaps through 2 seasons, but his body transformation has been impressive. He has dropped around 30 pounds, and his weight room numbers have only increased from when he was 370.

Parse it how you want, I guess - I'm not trying to mislead.  3 of those guys started on the OL against TX in the CFP - the 4th guy had started against Oregon and Tennessee and played ~45% of the snaps in the national title game.  I'm not claiming that any of them started at tackle.  FWIW Donovan Jackson himself didn't play tackle last year until Simmons went down in Eugene, at which point he switched over and made himself into a first round draft pick.

A Bucknuts reporter fielding questions gave his QB comparison thoughts:
Spoiler

navey: How big an advantage, if any, does Manning & Texas have compared to Sayin & OSU in this game, especially since it's the first game of the season?

Mark Porter: Manning has more experience having played some meaningful games in 2024. Sayin only had a few snaps in 2024 and he has a new offensive coordinator in 2025.vHaving a new offensive coordinator means their could be growing pains that are not his fault. Of course if you consider Ryan Day as the DEFACTO OC than nothing has changed.

Edge to Sayin playing at OSU, crowd noise should hurt Manning more than him.

Texas has a new Defensive line, how will the OSU offensive line handle them, this could make Sayin's life easy. Will Howard was the least sacked QB in college football last year, will that continue?

Texas and Arch Manning hold some early advantages—particularly around experience, mental toughness, system familiarity, and defensive readiness. But Ohio State counters with tangible home-field support and a swagger from their national champion confidence.

At its core, the game may come down to execution: Can Sayin rise to the occasion? Or will Manning show he's ready to lead Texas into the spotlight? Expect a tight, high-drama opener where QB performance and early rhythm could set the tone for the season.

Howard was the least sacked QB because his running was respected and Ds played contain on him and not because the tOSU OL was otherworldly.

Although those statements are undoubtedly true, are they relevant to this issue? My skepticism and concern are based on the fact that the positivity about Stroh seems like a suspiciously recent development. I am, however, frequently wrong and underinformed. If there has been a noted trend line for Stroh's development that I have missed, I would appreciate someone calming my tits for me.

Crowd noise could affect a new OL playing together for the first time - particularly one with a new C. A few false start penalties won't surprise me, and are the home crowd's reward for a job well done.

Crowd noise won't affect a competent QB. They're already used to playing silently with signals. Get the play call over the headset or from the sidelines, identify your key reads on defense (using motion to tip coverages if applicable), signal your hot reads, the snap on a count. Verify your read was correct (otherwise adjust) and let the ball rip on time and on target.

The longer a play goes on, the more the chance of an open receiver approaches 100%. Texas ruined the reputation of some stellar DBs when the DL couldn't ever get to the QB. I do not expect that to be a problem this season. Our DBs will be told to stay in the hip pocket of the receiver until the QB is on the ground. It shouldn't be a long wait.

Now swagger is unmatched. Gawd help us if the swagger is unleashed.

Well. I think I am now going to this game.  Anyone selling a single ticket?  If you are going, where are you sitting?  I will likely end up buying a solo ticket but trying to do my best to avoid an asskicking.  Where is the allotted section for longhorn visitors?

Aye, I agree on the difference between the RBs and meant they are comparable in terms of production.  I think OSU plans to use its duo at RB much like we did last year, with complementary styles to help fill situational roles and keep guys fresh.  FWIW you make a good point on the running QB - I think part of what helped OSU's running game last year was Howard's ability to run, which had been missing from that position during the Stroud/McCord days.  Manning will bring a lot to the table in that respect.

The problem being that neither of those dudes are anywhere close to the elite talent that you guys last year with Henderson and Judkins.

Peoples had 197 yards and 4.0 YPC. Donaldson, we knocked his ass out for 2-3 games in 2022. That room scares no one with a serious defense.

We return a 1K rusher and are getting back the most complete back on our roster.

He is a health risk, but so is Donaldson (if you are being honest). We also much better depth at the position that you guys do. We also have the much better OC that will max our talent better than Hartline. He of the 3 offensive points against Missouri in the 2023 Cotton Bowl. You better hope your OL is 10X better than their experience dictates they will be on Saturday or it get ugly.

How are they not relevant?

Very few of us are actually at practices, so there’s no trendline that exists for us other than practice reports, which are typically incomplete because people who attend typically aren’t focusing on offensive guards, and if they are, there’s a decent chance they don’t know what they’re actually looking at

They're relevant if there is some indication that Stroh was not evaluated correctly or if he has meaningfully developed. Truisms don't do anything for me unless there's some connection to facts.

Just like you, I too am scarred by Tom Herman telling me every Wednesday or Thursday that the week of practice leading up to a big game has been amongst the best the Longhorns have ever had.

So if you want to tap out now, feel free, I won't blame you.

However, I will tell you that the quarterback at The University of Texas has received extensive praise from the Texas coaching staff during the Longhorns' preparation for the defending National Champions.

Even with shuffling on the offensive line, the Texas quarterback has had command of practice and looked incredibly sharp in practice this week. Again, I understand this is often said in lead-ups to big games, but you don't often see your head coach laughing and joking with the media while on the podium if practice went poorly.

Also, aside from the practice focus, I have been told Arch Manning is the first in the facility each morning – confirming what CJ Baxter mentioned in his media availability on Monday.

We will see how it translates, but a sharp week of practice has folks growingly confident in Austin.

Couple rough play calls for the looks Georgia showed there.  As limited as Quinn was, he had played a lot of ball and was adept at getting into a good play at the LOS.  I gotta think that Arch will be strong there - that trait is as endemic to the Manning family as any other.   As things slow down, he won't miss a ball like Golden running wide open on that last play either.  Tough to watch, but I'm sure the kid has seen these cutups thousands of time.   Expecting an entirely different guy out there Saturday morning.
