This thread, the OP and a lot of these posts are strange. Arch didn’t play great, but when his line played well in the 4th quarter, he played well. He missed some throws late, and every QB does every game. But he was good except the last few plays.

He isn’t in the top 3 of reasons for why we lost. DL in the first half, OL through 3 quarters, and corners getting worked all were significantly worse than Arch. Probably Tre and Sark too.  I actually came away encouraged, relative to OSU or UTEP games.

He’s not going to be benched, nor should he.

Arch was not the reason we lost. He is improving and playing good to great when given time. His development will continue and I expect him to play lights out next year. We have other problems to fix in the meantime. Offensive playcalling, OL and DL play, run game and special teams to name a few.

Yep, agreed, though that wasn’t really on display today. I don’t think he’s a sure thing any more, so don’t misunderstand me. I just think blaming him for this loss is emotional blowhard bullshit.

then we write off this entire season while Arch gets comfy.

I don’t think so. I’ll be in Fair Park next Saturday getting shithammered and having fun. At this point I’m thinking 8-4 or 9-3 with a few upsets and maybe another WTF loss. And Arch gains valuable experience.

Are you under the impression that one of the backups can lead us to 10-2 and/or the CFP?  I am not.

I’d put our doubtfuls out already. No way Mateer has even gripped a football yet and Lewis was murdered by a brick wall today.

Arch had the deck stacked against him with no running game and some terrible OLine play...

But, those two sacks he took on the last drive were killer. Just feel like his game awareness/processing are lacking (though I was drunk as shit by that point, so maybe I'm misremebering)

Both can be true.

I don’t blame arch for the loss. He also wasn’t great either.

Yes, he doesn’t see anything underneath when there are open receivers available. He locks into his primary and refuses to check down when there are open targets to be had. Instead he will chunk it deep. Hell even on his first touchdown he held the ball way too long and made that TD tougher than it needed to be.

I saw that on Twitter. That was painful. But it also shows how fucking retarded Oklahoma really is for not putting padding on their brick walls. Especially when they built them that close to the field.

Yes, it’s really stupid. Though with how hard he hit the wall, I’m not sure padding would’ve helped much anyway.

He was far from the biggest issue today. But that doesn't mean he's not a liability right now. He's not seeing the middle of the field very well. Like ever, really. And he misses tons of layups. He's currently a drive killer with the inability to hit easy checkdowns. He can't hit intermediate passes unless he's platformed perfectly. He can't find his feet. There are probably 100 qb's in college right now that might not be as physically imposing as him but would be much more functional in this offense. He flashes an excellent ball 3 or 4 times a game but it's mostly astonishingly terrible otherwise. A dogshit offensive line just makes it worse. The only above average game he's had this year was against a high school team from Huntsville.

In Europe and didn't watch it. But I'm not sure how you are encouraged after a loss to a team that's lost three in a row with a quarterback that's been on campus for three years that had 10 straight incompletions against fucking UTEP.

This is the problem.  Arch has the Manning name, but not the talent.  It is Sark's job to put the best players on the field giving the team the best chance to win.  He's not doing that....problem number 2.

1 play doesn't mean much when UF was playing prevent, but Caldwell shouldn't starts because he'd be on IR by now. Quinn would be in the hospital. You at least have to give Arch credit for being tough as nails. And he did have a nice completion every time he had a snoball's chance in hell of getting a good pass off. He did hold the ball too long a couple of times too.

Like others have said, Arch is improving and he's down the list of things to blame this loss on. The first is not doing whatever it takes to get a couple of good OL in the portal instead of all the DL. Second, not getting a good RB when you have 2 coming back from major surgery. OSU got Donaldson so there were good RB's available.

That's fine.  The next step of calling to bench him for a jag transfer from troy doesn't make sense.

RB’s rushed 11 times for 15 yards. OL gave up 6 sacks, 35 hurries, and had 5 false starts, most of the time against 4 man fronts by Florida.  I don’t know how you can properly evaluate any QB when the rest of the offense is playing like that around him.

Let's not forget the holding penalties...

There was a holding penalty on a sack in the 3rd quarter.  Penalty declined.  And another holding penalty (Baker) to open the 4th quarter.  Washington also had a holding penalty late in the game.

The counter to this is to say it's difficult to evaluate the offense as a whole when the QB is playing the way Arch has played.

Moseley seemed to be open alot. Running games typically struggle when the LBs don't have to worry about defending short passes at all. I saw some nice pockets that unfortunately were unable the protect QB long enough for whatever algebra he had going on upstairs.

The dude struggled to execute handoff meshpoints and screen passes. Who's fault is that?

Cool. I still think he just simply is not making enough of the “easy” wide pile throws, holding the ball too long, and not running soon enough.

I just simply can’t say “it’s all the OL” and absolve Arch completely.

He looks shell shocked out there. How many times did he get blasted yesterday? If you can’t protect him you have to move him around.

Yeah all those missed open receivers, bad passes and interceptions are all on the OL

He refuses to get rid of the ball. If the first read isn’t there he’s in panic throw it deep at the last second mode.

He was hit several times within 2 seconds of the snap. That’s a problem

He's paid well to make tough decisions that should lead to winning games and more. That's all that's on his performance review.

I'd hate to demoralize Arch, but I'd have to keep in mind my job.

These threads are obviously idiotic but FWIW, Caldwell came in cold and threw the best anticipation pass of the game. Wingo wasn’t open when he released it but broke open to the pass precisely how it is drawn up. Perfect anticipation. Which stands in stark contrast to Manning needing at least six seconds in the pocket and someone to break open by ten yards before he throws it. Very frustrating.

For a fleeting moment, I had hope. The prior few plays were disaster that spelled more disaster. I did a rare scream at the TV. Don't take him out!

The "he didn't lose the game by himself" argument is a pretty low bar for a starting QB. That's about the same level as, "well he played well for a quarter."

As you state, pointing to bad play by the OL doesn't explain Arch's dithering on pass plays or his abysmal placement even where there are catches.

Even QBs with great O lines make some dogshit throws.  Arch makes some dogshit throws to your point probably one or two too many.  He needs to improve.  He is not the primary problem with this team.  YOU WIN FUCKING FOOTBALL GAMES IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL ON THE OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE LINES.

The all caps persuades me that Arch is competent. Thanks.

Strange posts? Arch didn't play great and choked at the end except for a few plays? Which side of this discussion are you on? You do not describe adequate performance.

yeah i mean he hasn’t been great, but it’s premature to write him off.

Hasn't been great? I missed the SHSU game, but I've seen the rest. We're coming up on the halfway mark of the season, has Arch had even a sound game in there? Has anyone thought, "alright, here we go. Arch is on point. I can't wait to see him play next week"?

I don't stake out territory as a fan. I don't have a stand to defend on who starts. I like Arch. I dread him on the field as QB week to week.

That's way beyond "hasn't been great."

By all means, we should choose our starters  based on anything other than performance. You always start the guy once rated a five star over a guy with seasons of experience. Why is that even being discussed.

To win, I bench Arch and start Caldwell. It's merited based on performance. It also may help with Arch's choking problem. I want Arch to work out. I'm past the point of throwing away games to see that happen.

The Florida fans are right. We were overrated and will likely remain so. Next year is the year we should be great. But, there's that quarterback thing.

Arch holds onto the ball way too long. It's like he already has his one target chosen before the snap and waits to long for them to get open. He's gotta learn to look for the check downs and get the ball out faster. Hesitating like he does causes poor throws. Also, a few of those deep balls he threw while running so of course they were inaccurate.
