This is actually an understatement.

I was actively rooting against the "protagonist" about halfway through. Maybe that was the point, but it was just a terrible movie, poorly told. 130 minutes of shit and then it turns into multiple poorly done movie cliches at the end.

Before that the story was all luck and coincidence and absurd plot points. The soundtrack for some reason leaned on 80s pop for a film set in the 50s. Even that was dumb.

There wasn't anything interesting about it. Nothing. Except maybe George Gervin's cameo. As a Spurs fan that was legitimately the only redeeming thing about the film.

I went in knowing nothing. They could have made it a sports movie, which I thought it may have been, about a table tennis player and it could have been great.

The wife wanted to see this one. I now get to choose the next 5 movies minimally, just based on how shitty this choice was.

surprised mind reading GIF

What you wrote pretty much was our conversation on the drive home.

The music never fit, there is nothing that makes you care about any of the characters outside of possibly Endo, and we did find ourselves guessing if that truly was George Gervin and who played the farmer who found the dog.

I truly believe this is a perfect example of people not wanting to call out total shit of a movie because of who made it, starred in it etc.....

Rewatched Scream again and barely noticed that Kenny the Cameraman who got shit from Courtney Cox was also Warren in There’s Something About Mary.

Ok - Marty Supreme. We liked it but didn’t love it. It’s def the kind of movie - A24 types will appreciate and more casual movie goers will be like “WTH was that even about?” If you like Safdie’s other stuff you know what you are in for I think. TC is a superstar and will get an Oscar nom.

Somewhere around a 6.5/7 out of 10 for us.

WTF was the honey scene?

I thought Marty Supreme was great — particularly the performances of Chalamet, Paltrow, and yes Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary. Also loved the music and score. But, not surprised that it won’t be for everyone.

I’m guessing y’all who hated it felt the same way about Uncut Gems?

I love that one too, but this movie and protagonist were silly and fun in comparison and I definitely felt that while watching.

I started watching Uncut Gems and bailed after about 30 minutes, so I guess I shouldn’t even bother with Marty Supreme

We have tickets to see Marty Supreme on the 31st after a boozy lunch. Wife and I are both A24 dorks and loved Uncut Gems so hopefully Marty Supreme doesn’t suck.

Marty Supreme is about an underdog that’s not particularly likable and a fairly shitty human being. And there is no redemption arc to speak of. If you think a protagonist needs to be mostly a good guy this movie is not for you.

I have enjoyed some of A24's work and others no so much.

Didn't care for Uncut Gems because there wasn't anyone in the movie I could find to give a shit about to invest my time into the plot. Have read and talked about people who described all the tension at the end and the only tension to me was for it to get over so I could go piss because I didn't care what happened to Sandler's character.

Multiply that by a factor of 10 for Marty Supreme for my family and I.

I have no idea how in the world one could perceive the protagonist as silly or fun. Fuck the most fun guy is this piece of shit is his playing partner who had a sense of humor about the world and I mean the one with the ink and not the cab. I won't say anymore not to spoiler it, but this feels like a PTA or Wes movie were some people are never going to say they don't like it because they don't want to be perceived as not being in on the joke so to speak.

Seinfeld terms they don't want to be seen as Elaine when she didn't understand the cartoon in the New Yorker.

Bill Murray has a made a mint playing underdogs who are pieces of shit and there are plenty of others.

Won't go into Marty because others have to still see it, but you don't have to like a character to appreciate them or become invested in their character.

Take this guy for example:

Murray’s characters are likable, at least for the most part. Lector is so likable they invented a sympathetic backstory for him. That’s not what Marty is supposed to be, and Chalamet (whom I am not particularly a fan of) nails it IMO

Stick with it. I felt the same after 10 minutes, but it pays off.

Not about liking, as mentioned before I fully recognize you don't have to like a character to appreciate them or feel a connection.

Greeks, Romans, Shakespeare, a few other cultures and others, hell how many comic storylines are built around unlikeable protagonist, but gives us a reason to give a fuck as I said before I really can't find many people or reasons to give a fuck in this story.

Maybe I am just artistically stunted, but I feel at times with similar movies some come across as Tom and Jean Rafio picking shades of black for Lii' Sebastian Memorial Ceremony.

This. Very much this. Heavy movie.

The film deals with what happens when you combine an unshakable belief in self (Marty is “supreme” - at least in his own mind) with a completely amoral worldview.

The consequences, intended and unintended, are extremely interesting to me, and I honestly didn’t find a single character uninteresting. Also, a glimpse of Japan trying to find its national identity as it was emerging from US occupation was interesting IMO.

Throw in the seemingly incongruous 80’s music (Marty is a man ahead of his time), and the whole thing works.

Griffin in summer… an awkward, endearing, coming out story of a young teen. On a best films of 2025 you probably haven’t seen list.

Rear Window starring Grace Kelly. Jimmy Stewart is also in this movie, but I didn't notice him much.

Grace Kelly is stunning and Jimmy can't stop looking at neighbors out his rear window, even though Grace Kelly is traipsing about his apartment.

Just saw the anaconda reboot this weekend, was fantastic and fun as hell. Probably a top 3 movie for me of 2025.

Watched Uncut Gems for the first time yesterday. Liked it a lot and didn't really expect the ending. I don't think I'd ever heard of Julia Fox before but I thought she was as good as Sandler. Bummer she dated Kanye.

Your first sentence basically described Lane Kiffin.

Watching True Romance again. Man what an all-star cast. Slater, Arquette, Walken, Gandolfini, Hopper, Pitt, S Jackson, nuts.

The Housemaid. It was kind of a poor man's Gone Girl, in the same chicklit twisty domestic thriller lane. By the same director as A Simple Favor and it kind of reminded me of that one too. I went in expecting Seyfried and Sweeney to look hot and it delivered in that regard.

Seyfried’s acting in this was pretty good. Sweeney was, well, she did what her fans want to see. She got naked and that’s about it. Her acting in Christy and Eden was actually good. The only part of this where her acting was above par was when she was angry in the 2nd half of the film. I hope for her sake she finds some way to be in movies where she doesn’t have to get naked for anyone to show up and watch it because hoo boy she is not going to age well.

Wife and I saw it this afternoon. We both liked it quite a bit, but agreed that it could have easily been 30 minutes shorter.

Berlin Express was on TCM, Film Noir Germany post-WW2

damn good film

And then the end of it, you find out it's all about some Soviet bullshit trying to get us to get along with the Soviets Just complete fantasy

That he called that a top three movie for him is funny. He must’ve watched only three movies this year.

I did enjoy the movie. It was funny and it did what it was supposed to do. I like Jack Black and Paul Rudd. It was a stupid fun movie, but fun nonetheless.

i know exactly what plot line they could have cut to get it down to a shade over 2 hours, but i don't want to spoil the movie for anyone.

Anniversary

Saw this a couple days ago on PPV because I had a voucher that was about to expire. Set in present-day/near-future, dystopian, political thriller with Diane Lane and Kyle Chandler (whose character's last name is even Taylor!!). I really enjoyed it.

Civil War

Released in 2024 so I'll be vague as to not spoil anything in case some have missed it. I thought it was really damn good. Some things were a little predictable but then other things like how they got from plot point A to plot point B were not. Intensity at times was more than I expected. Would watch again.

We’ve been on a bit of a Korea tear at the moment and watched:

  • Parasite - fantastic movie

  • K-pop Demon Hunters - tons of fun, paper thin plot, but the music slams and goes hard

  • The Wailing - really good though would argue that it could have been shorter

  • Exhuma - good but not as good as the wailing

Exhuma and The Wailing both really lean into Korean Shamanism which was new and interesting

The Woman in Cabin 10 - pretty and forgettable

On flights I killed some time with Mission Impossible Fallout and Shang-Chi

I’m happy to keep listing out very good original movies if you’d like. Eddington, Train Dreams, Bugonia, Blue Moon, Black Bag, Hamnet, The Mastermind, Friendship, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Bring Her Back, Together, Companion, Sorry Baby, etc etc etc.

As is almost always true, the problem lies not with original ideas and original movies, but the movie going audience at large. Studios exist to make money, and Americans by and large are brain-dead dip shits that slurp up sequel schlock like it’s a 44oz Dr Pepper at McDonalds. Rinse and repeat.

I don't think it is solely the audiences though they are in big part of the issue.

When you have the level of administrative overhead that you have with the big studios (not just salaries, but the high amounts of debt service taken on to fund some of these "mergers") coupled with having to answer to shareholders and private funding sources at a frequency that doesn't match up with time it takes to put in motion, shoot, edit, promote, release, and reap the potential rewards of a single film it is no wonder more and more of the bigger studios have fallen back on what they think are proven story lines and the more experimental film approaches and original content comes from smaller, independent film studios.

No different than what we have seen in the music industry.

Maybe this discussion should be had on its own thread and not one about "the movie you just watched".

The Hollywood studios are not interested in ideas. They want reliable franchise properties. That means sequels.

That's why every multiplex fills 12 screens with 4 movies. They've created an audience for it even if it is repetitious. If the people want the same swill over and over, give them the same swill.

There is no incentive for the businessmen and women who now run the studios to risk their money on anything new. Not too many decades ago, you actually had people who loved movies running things, so they'd take some chances on smaller scale movies.

There are plenty of creatives in Hollywood with good, new ideas. Nobody in power cares.

Every now and then on Turner you can catch a glimpse of the one Thin Man series, Disney cranked out how many movies featuring Kurt Russell and his crew of teen age misfits, Frankie and Annette, heck as a kid I remember every now and then getting Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein or the Mummy or the Wolfman.

The idea that the studios turned out purely original content for decades is not accurate and they have churned out swill from damn near the beginning.

Fair but I couldn’t find anywhere else to put it and I looked for a good 90 seconds.

They were putting out two movies a week. There was huge variety. That's what's missing now. Less variety=fewer opportunities for excellence.

I'm not sure whose idea your alluding to. I don't make that claim.

Agree, William Powell carried himself in a way that basically defined the role without him every speaking.

It was however, a series of movies which in my uncultured mind would be comparable to a sequel.

Watched Interstellar for the first time last night. I thought I’d seen it and kept skipping over it then saw a trailer the other day and realized I hadn’t.

So good.

William Powell and Myrna Loy were a great pair. Love the Thin Man series.

It’s humorous to see Bugonia listed above as an example of an original movie when it’s a remake of a South Korean movie
