Spoken like a true moron.

Risk has to have an adequate level of reward to make it worth taking. Risk without a positive reward to consequence ratio is how stupid people go through life.

There's no reward to big timing some other non playoff team in a meaningless exhibition. There is reward to getting all of your freshmen and young players you want to contribute next season a ton of snaps in a meaningless game.

The reward should be putting more tape out there playing against your peers, the top recruits from years prior that have grown up. Not tape playing against the Boston Colleges of the world. The reward is getting better. Getting to see younger players play. See a window where so and so might be breaking out. This team needs all the practices it can get.

Most players will be playing this game, including Arch, because they love the game and want to get better. Colin Simmons isn't bitching out of this game. Only players like Ant Hill and transfers will probably sit out. It also would not surprise me to see Hill playing, either. He's a gamer. Same with Taaffe. They don't need to play, but they want to play because they love it, and it's their last college game for a lot of them.

Good. That's what we want.

I would rather battle against the giants and let the chips fall where they fall.

They’ll probably have a snap count.

This. They're absolutely going to have a snap count for guys like Manning, Simmons, Hill (if he chooses to play), Muhammad (see Hill), Baxter, Wingo, Moore, etc.

But, we also get to see younger players ball out. Good or bad. We aren't getting woodsheded, so we can take chances like this. Also some HS recruits will be there to work out, too. Just like Terry last year and some others. It's a win-win.

outside of just playing for love of the game, it doesn’t really matter for returning starters. And the whole securing your spot is dumb. Spring practice and fall practice will have more impact than the bowl game

You're missing the point. Someone can / should / might / will... Earn a spring rotation spot.

I guarantee that the fans of the two teams that played in the game can answer that question. And that's the relevant audience FOR the question.

It would stand to reason that the CFP doesn't want to burn down the whole sport just to elevate itself. But we do live in the "fuck you got mine" era, so who cares I guess. Let's just fuck up the regular season and play dog shit cupcake teams to appease the Arkansas AD

The bowl organizations had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the world of the CFP. They are participants out of life-saving necessity and they (should) know that their days are numbered.

The CFP is not going to require bowl participation at any level.

Hill isnt playing. The only NFL draft bound player I wouldn't be surprised to see is Taaffe.

As far as tape, they played multiple teams that finished top 15 in the country this season. They will go to the combine. Some may even play in the senior bowl. Tape in a meaningless game no one cares about isnt going to make any difference to the draft.

It shouldn't be up to the players. Sark should sit Arch and Simmons and give this game to Lacy and all the freshmen as well as the backups. Getting some game reps would do them well ahead of spring, and unless we're going hog wild bonkers in the portal we'll be counting on a lot of them for snaps next season.

People like Burke, Moore, Muhammad, etc should not play. Sark should take it off the table for them. Thank them for everything and tell them to get started working on the combine and getting ready for the predraft workouts for scouts and GMs. Do what's best for their future and remove any pressure on them. Their work at Texas is done.

All of sports are meaningless exhibition. People like the immediate drama of not knowing who will win a game.

If all someone cares about is the season, why watch anything other than a championship game? It actually nicely links to what watching a game offers: small victories like first downs, larger victories like scoring or smothering the other team, and all the way to the final victory. The result of the game becomes a small victory that's part of a season.

Players like to play. I'm sure anybody on this board who played would be ecstatic to play another meaningless exhibition. Who cares about a bloodless calculation made by some fan who whines at anything less than total victory? If I had the privilege of being a player, I'd be all about "Let's suit up and play Michigan. Sounds like fun to me."

I don't even understand what pleasure there is in following the sport any other way. Of course, some seem to watch the Longhorns to feed some sort of weird displeasure jones.

Players bound for the NFL in a few months may want to sit out, but they know they will play again.

They might, but they would make Notre Dame the exception like they do everything else.

Just stop giving Notre Dame the white glove treatment is the answer.

what weight do you place on Sark for Texas not making the playoffs? Do you feel if a team like Texas doesn’t make the playoffs they should not participate in a bowl? Do you feel this way for all teams who don’t make the playoffs? They all should opt out? Players can get injured in the first round of the playoffs or the second round also. Any round. Any game any time. And I do think you would agree that this team needs the practice.

Regular season games count towards making the postseason. What does winning the Citrus Bowl accomplish?

What's the difference between this and the game before which they could have torn their ACL/MCL? Nothing. You.play to get better, and sometimes shit happens. We played with 1 RB last year and still made it. We played with 1 1/2 this year and we lost to Florida. Everything isn't linear. Injuries happen and they suck. That's why if they choose not to play (which is unlikely) I don't begrudge them for it. They have a future in the NFL. But what about the younger players? You don't think 3 extra weeks of practice and one more game will help them?

You can't play and be scared. You're gonna get hit. Every time you practice, play, whatever, there's that chance it could ruin football for you. It happens. Baxter is a good case to look at. He was on his way to murder people and he tore every ligament is body had to offer in his knee during spring practice. He came back, he's not at full strength, but he wants that chance that's in front of him.

Why is this line regurgitated ad nauseum? Nobody here is scared to play fucking Michigan. But trying to act like an exhibition game matters is odd.

Adds to the season's and overall W/L total; gives real game reps to next year's players; provides recruiting momentum; opportunity for the fans to watch their team play one more time before the offseason begins.

But it does matter. Maybe not to you, and that's fine. But to say an exhibition game is meaningless doesn't hold water. Those extra practices are needed in the worst way. This team needs to gel. We need to see other, younger players get real snaps against their peers, which cannot be replicated in practice. Sure, anyone can argue that if you aren't in the playoffs that playing an opponent is zero sum, but at the end of the day it's the bigger picture. It's not just one game. It allows early enrollees practice. Those who are leaving opens up a spot for someone else to shine and get their chance. It's not about if we beat them or vice versa, it's about finding the players who have gotten better and see how they perform under pressure.

And you know what? I wouldn't be mad if he didn't play them. I totally get it. But the tape isn't just for those who are departing this year, it's also for those who didn't get a lot of playing time this season to get their feet wet and see how they perform against their peers under pressure now that we don't have to worry about if this L will cost us a CFP spot.

It's beneficial to the team as a whole. If he sits Arch, fuck man, let's see Lacy roll. Or if Dia Bell is there see if anyone knows how he's performing in practice. At the end of the day I get your point. I do. But also, these last 3 weeks and game will benefit all who get to play. And again, if Sark chooses not to play X, Y, Z because he's unsure if they could use it or not/possible injury we can't have, that's also fine. We have an 85 man roster where the next man up could be the next first or second rd pick. Get all of our DBs real game time, like Santana Wilson, Kobe Black, Kade Phillips, Jonah Williams, Xavier Filsaime, etc. Same with the WR's like Lockett, Ffrench, McCutcheon, Mosley, and so on and so forth all the way down to every position.

I'm 100% good with using it like an NFL preseason and starting KJ Lacey, Simon, Ffrench, Lockett, etc.

But we know that's not what the lot of y'all want. You want 1s vs 1s and to win.

No, I'm totally fine starting Lacy, Lockett, Ffrench, McCutcheon, etc. I don't know who "y'all" are, but I just want a game and whomever starts, starts. I would be more excited to see our young WR's actually get playing time against a quality opponent.

It smells like bitch in here.

You play to win the game.

Fighters fight.

This is an opportunity to see who’s heart is in the game and who’s isn’t. Insurance policies are standard fare for NFL prospects. We are all day to day, any practice or game or car ride could be tragic. So the committee held us down this year. Best way to bring that into start relief is to get out on the field and show we belong while others get exposed. Working within the system to change things is way better than opting out and thinking you can wag the dog (if that is what ND is trying to do). We go give people a show against Michigan and the conferences and TV execs that count the money have data to show that auto-qualifying low level teams into a 12 team bracket isn’t giving the sport legitimacy and it’s leaving tons of money on the table. Go to 16, revise the conference rules, etc. and get things fixed.

The full quote:

Steve Sarkisian on the effect ND opting out of its bowl game can have on college football: "I don't know about the ripple effect for everybody. We all have goals and aspirations of winning conference championships and winning national championships, at least we do. But I also think there's an experience factor in all this, there's a growth in all this. There's development in all this. There's camaraderie. There's so much that goes into this that sometimes a bowl game is about celebrating a season and finishing a season the right way."
